The Differential Effect Of Maximal Aerobic Exertion Upon Cognitive Abilities In Highly Trained Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercises, Howard Bailey May 1981

The Differential Effect Of Maximal Aerobic Exertion Upon Cognitive Abilities In Highly Trained Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercises, Howard Bailey

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The immediate effect of maximal aerobic exertion upon cognition was investigated. It was proposed that a group of trained subjects (n = 12) would perform better on both the pre-and post-cognitive test battery as compared to untrained subjects (n = 10), in which the trained . subjects engaged in an aerobic fitness test between the pre-and and post-test. It was also proposed that the aerobic fitness test would have a differential effect on the cognitive abilities of the two trained subgroups with the aerobic subgroup (n = 7) performing better than the anaerobic subgroup (n = 5) on the post …

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson Jan 1981

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson

Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical ventilation with inspiratory positive pressure and positive, end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) has been used to improve arterial oxygenation and to re-expand and stabilize collapsed areas of the lung in patients with non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and adult respiratory distress syndrome. However lung hyperinflation by PEEP results in decreased cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. The interaction of the mechanical and the neuroreflex effects which alter cardiovascular function during PEEP have not been examined in a study designed to evaluate the components (arterial baroreflex, cardiopulmonary mechanoreflex, and mechanical) and their integrated effects. This study examined the cardiovascular responses to 2.5 cm H(,2)O PEEP …

The Influence Of Hormones, Alpha- And Beta-Adrenergic Effectors On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Isolated Rabbit Hepatocytes., Mark Anthony Yorek

Theses and Dissertations

Hormonal regulation of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis was studied in hepatocytes isolated from 48 hr fasted rabbits. We found that these hepatocytes convert a variety of substrates into glucose at the following rates ((mu)mol glucose formed/30 min/10('8) cells): alanine, 2.24 (+OR-) 0.50;

Studies Of The Azasulfonium Functionality: The Cyclization Of Methionine And Other 3-(Amino)Thioethers To Form Isothiazolidinum Salts., Darrell William Swank Jan 1981

Studies Of The Azasulfonium Functionality: The Cyclization Of Methionine And Other 3-(Amino)Thioethers To Form Isothiazolidinum Salts., Darrell William Swank

Theses and Dissertations

The formation and stability of the azasulfonium functionality within the isothiazolidinium structure was investigated. A variety of S- and N-substituted aminothioethers, isothiazolidinium salts and sulfoxides were synthesized, isolated and characterized. Studies of the reaction of a variety of methionine derivatives and analogues with iodine indicated that cyclization occurred when a trimethylene bridge separated the amine and thioether functional groups. The amine could be primary or secondary but could not be in amide linkage and the sulfur could not exist as a sulfoxide or sulfonium salt, but only as a thioether. Significant yields of isothiazolidinium salts were obtained when N-halo compounds …

An Analysis Of Alternative Educational Delivery Systems In Northwestern Minnesota., Adeline Katie Jaeger Jan 1981

An Analysis Of Alternative Educational Delivery Systems In Northwestern Minnesota., Adeline Katie Jaeger

Theses and Dissertations

The study purpose was to learn the perceived general desirability and also the perceived specific feasibility of nineteen alternative educational delivery ideas, many of which required inter-district cooperation. The population included individuals who had formally served the fifty-two school districts of northwestern Minnesota as representatives for areawide educational planning, or as superintendents of schools, or as both superintendents and representatives. The instrument used to gather data was based upon delivery ideas which resulted from long-range educational planning activities. These activities had been mandated by the Minnesota Legislature in 1976.Five research questions considered (1) role of the respondent during planning, (2) …

Distribution Of Fishes In North And South Dakota Basins Affected By The Garrison Diversion Unit, John B. Owen, Dean S. Elsen, Gordon W. Russell

UND Publications

"The distribution of fishes in the James River basin in North and South Dakota and the Wild Rice, Sheyenne, and Souris River basins and Devils Lake closed basin in North Dakota was investigated in 1974 and 1975 by University of North Dakota biologists. The purpose of this study was to obtain current fish distribution records and to identify factors affecting distribution...A large water development project, the Garrison Diversion Unit, is being planned in the above basins for irrigation, municipal and industrial, and fish and wildlife purposes. This project may affect fish distribution and enable fish species to be carried inadvertently …

Classroom Climates As Measured By The Tuckman Teacher Feedback Form: A Comparison Between Academic And Vocational Teachers In A Manitoba High School., William Welsh Jan 1981

Classroom Climates As Measured By The Tuckman Teacher Feedback Form: A Comparison Between Academic And Vocational Teachers In A Manitoba High School., William Welsh

Theses and Dissertations

This research was conducted for the purpose of comparing the classroom climates of Academic and Vocational teachers as measured by the Tuckman Teacher Feedback Form. It was hypothesized that the different employment and academic backgrounds of the Academic teachers and the Vocational teachers might have an effect on the climate within their classrooms. In addition to examining the climates in Academic and vocational classrooms, the researcher attempted to determine if any differences in the climates were related to whether the teachers had more or less than five years of teaching experience. In the review of the literature the teaching-learning process, …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Military And University Environments, And Psychological Well-Being., Edwin Woodrow Gunberg Jr. Jan 1981

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Military And University Environments, And Psychological Well-Being., Edwin Woodrow Gunberg Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between locus of control and psychological well-being for different environmental situations. Two different environments were selected, the military environment as an example of a situation where events are frequently beyond individual control, and the university environment as an example of a situation where individuals have more control over the events in their lives. Internal and external subjects from both environments were compared on psychological well-being, a linear composite of self-concept and anxiety. The experimental hypotheses reflected the expectation that individuals with an internal locus of control would have higher …
