The Removal Of Sodium From Lignite By Ion Exchange, John T. Crystal Aug 1970

The Removal Of Sodium From Lignite By Ion Exchange, John T. Crystal

Theses and Dissertations

The rate and extent of sodium removal from lignite by ion exchange were studied using calcium chloride solutions. The experimental apparatus consisted of a centrifugal stirring device in a limited bath. Four variables, rotation speed, calcium chloride concentration, particle size, and moisture content were considered.

It was determined that rotation speed had no discernable effect on the rate or extent of sodium removal. Particle size and moisture content, however, do have considerable effect on the rate and extent of sodium removed. It was also found that as the calcium chloride concentration was decreased the exchange approached theoretical stoichiometric proportions.

2. Parents believed their children are receiving a better training in physical education now than when the respondents attended school.

3. Physical education was rated …

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko Aug 1970

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research and discussion has suggested that task ambiguity and experimenter-subject familiarity with the task are important factors affecting the generality and strength of the experimenter bias effect. These factors were conceptualized as inter-task ambiguity (inherent in the task) and two types of intra-task ambiguity (experimenter's familiarity with the task and subject's familiarity with the task). It was hypothesized that experimenter bias would: (1) be a significant factor in a more ambiguous task and not a significant factor in a less ambiguous task, (2) more likely be communicated to the subjects who were less familiar with the task, and (3) …

The Election Of 1892 In North Dakota, Terrance B. Gallagher Aug 1970

The Election Of 1892 In North Dakota, Terrance B. Gallagher

Theses and Dissertations

The early political history of North Dakota includes a strong loyalty to the Republican Party. Yet, the election in 1892 recorded a defeat \ of the Republican candidates. An attempt was made in this thesis to determine the cause of this unusual occurrence. The state's political events, conventions, campaign, and election were traced through North Dakota's newspapers and other sources. A brief survey was also made of the presidential campaign and election and its connection to the North Dakota election. Several years of economic discontent had already reduced Republican election majorities. Third party movement, an outgrowth of the Farmers' Alliance, …

Selected Major Issues In The Philosophy, Design, And Operation Of A Simulated Model Office, L. Wayne Beers Jul 1970

Selected Major Issues In The Philosophy, Design, And Operation Of A Simulated Model Office, L. Wayne Beers

Theses and Dissertations

In many cases, past business graduates from secondary schools were unable to secure job-entry office positions due to their lack of business experience. Concern over this problem caused many business educators to seek improved methods of training for practical office work experience.

Today, much attention is being focused on the Simulated Model Office Method for work experience. However, simulated model office programs have been hampered by a lack of organizational principles concerning the philosophy, design, and operation of simulated model offices.

The problem in this study was threefold: (1) to determine the philosophy, design, and operation of model office simulation, …

Accounting Treatment Of Research And Development Costs, Cecil B. Ellis Jun 1970

Accounting Treatment Of Research And Development Costs, Cecil B. Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

The expenditures for industrial research and development by companies have increased significantly in recent years and this has had a dramatic impact upon the reported financial position and results of operations of those companies engaged in substantial research and development programs. It was determined that the majority of companies treat research and development costs as a current expense which in many instances does not adhere to sound accounting theory. The companies justified using the current expense method in accounting for research and development expenditures because of conservatism, expediency, the uncertainty of future benefits, and the acceptability by the Internal Revenue …

Differential Behavior On Skill And Chance Tasks As A Function Of Perceived Locus Of Control, Michael D. Paulson Jun 1970

Differential Behavior On Skill And Chance Tasks As A Function Of Perceived Locus Of Control, Michael D. Paulson

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was designed to examine differences in behavior that may exist between internals and externals on skill and chance tasks. Since internals should be more motivated in a skill task, it was hypothesized that they would show more trials to extinction, more frustration, and more arousal in acquisition and extinction on the skill task than externals. Since externals should be more motivated on a chance task, it was hypothesized that they would show more trials to extinction, more frustration, and more arousal in acquisition and extinction on the chance task than internals.

Subjects were pre-selected on the basis of …

A Study Of Reliability Of The Aahper Youth Fitness Test As Applied To Male Visually Handicapped Students At The North Dakota State School For The Blind, David P. Shyiak Jun 1970

A Study Of Reliability Of The Aahper Youth Fitness Test As Applied To Male Visually Handicapped Students At The North Dakota State School For The Blind, David P. Shyiak

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of physical fitness exhibited by American youth as compared to European youth has prompted the development of the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test to assay the physical fitness of children in the public schools. This test is being administered to thousands of public school children every year. Today, over sixty percent of the visually handicapped students are receiving their education in the schools of the communities where they live. The AAHPER Youth Fitness Test has been found to be reliable when administered to normal children. This study was formulated to determine the reliability of the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test …

Attitude Change In Relation To The Primacy-Recency Problem And Retention-Acceptance Factors, Barry L. Johnson Jun 1970

Attitude Change In Relation To The Primacy-Recency Problem And Retention-Acceptance Factors, Barry L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

In attempting to persuade people, it is still not clear whether information presented first (primacy) or information presented last (recency) is more influential. Miller and Campbell (1959) found a primacy effect when they utilized a one week delay prior to obtaining a measurement with their post-test. They also obtained a measure of retention and found that this did not account for the attitude change. They agreed with Hovland (1957) that acceptance factors might be affecting the final opinion change.

This study attempted to clarify the role played by retention and acceptance factors on primacy-recency effects. A one week delay was …

Development Of Procedures For Determination Of Yield Lines, Rafik Y. Itani Jun 1970

Development Of Procedures For Determination Of Yield Lines, Rafik Y. Itani

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents methods for determining yield line patterns of isotropic plates that are uniform in thickness and subjected to a uniform loading. The importance of these methods arises from the mathematical complications involved in finding yield line patterns by the present procedures .

Since yielding patterns are dependent on the shape of a plate as well as the support conditions, the methods recommended here will be based on assuming a yielding pattern and checking for its correctness. The use of the computer can provide many trial solutions in a very short time. The correct pattern will be that which …

The Design Of A Life Support Circulation System For Hyperbaric Chambers, Kenneth P. Orchuk Jun 1970

The Design Of A Life Support Circulation System For Hyperbaric Chambers, Kenneth P. Orchuk

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to present the design of a Life-Support Circulation System for Hyperbaric Chambers as specified by the Themis Committee.

An important objective was to design a versatile circulation system which could be constructed from commercial products.

Circulation specifications were set by conditions required for the animals under observation in the hyperbaric chambers. Since these studies were to be conducted for prolonged periods, cost analysis warranted a closed system design.

The versatility of the system required investigation of several types of valves for satisfactory operation. Also, pressure monitoring controlled valves and pressure regulators had to be …

Information Extraction And Incidental Learning As Functions Of Locus Of Control, Motivation, And Sex, James Newell Hall Jun 1970

Information Extraction And Incidental Learning As Functions Of Locus Of Control, Motivation, And Sex, James Newell Hall

Theses and Dissertations

Past research findings on information extraction as a function of locus of control have been conflicting. By using a hidden-word task ■ with each of the twenty items being exposed for one second, this was investigated in a three way analysis of variance design (locus of control by sex by motivation). Hypothesized, but not found, was a significant personality by motivation (instructions) interaction. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between internals and externals, males and females, and high and low motivation conditions.

An attempt at replication and extension of Spjut's (1968) study on incidental learning and locus of control was …

An Exploration Of Some Sex Differences In Agreement-Attraction Relationships, Bette Ann Havens Jun 1970

An Exploration Of Some Sex Differences In Agreement-Attraction Relationships, Bette Ann Havens

Theses and Dissertations

The investigation was designed to explore some sex differences in agreement-attraction relationships. The investigation was divided into two parts: one part dealt with a hypothetical stranger as a partner, the other part required a known acquaintance as a partner. Pairs of same sexed subjects responded to agreement measures and to a questionnaire describing aspects of friendship. The only result in Study I was that males who agree with other males on specific daily activity have higher levels of friendship ("voluntary interdependence"), than those who are dissimilar on specific daily activity. This was the only result found using a hypothetical person …

Communication Of Experimenter Expectancy As A Function Of The Internal-External Locus Of Control, Diane M. Harder Jun 1970

Communication Of Experimenter Expectancy As A Function Of The Internal-External Locus Of Control, Diane M. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Several studies suggest) that experimenters may influence subjects in experimental situations and thereby obtain the predicted results (Rosenthal, 1966). Thus, the results obtained in research may reflect (1) independent vatfiabl.es, and (2) bi. resulting from the communication of expectancies by the experimenter.

Although numerous investiga^ ons have considered characteristics of experir nters and subjects that facilitate expectancy communication, the experimenter effect remains inadequately explained (Fode, 1967). It was felt that the Investigation of an additional variable, internal-external locus of ontrol, (Rotter, 1954) might contribute further informationL Past research suggested that internal subjects are better influencers (Pharos, 1965), and that they …
