Theses and Dissertations
Purpose of this Study: The purpose of this study was to ascertain if a change would occur in students self image as a result of being involved in the Free Reading Program (FRP).
The Free Reading Program (FRP) was a design focusing on a personalized curriculum which offered students a free choice of materials. Substitution of the reading program for all social studies requirements was the incentive. Recognized educational principles were used in this program with the object of creating an atmosphere of relevancy for the student. Paramount consideration was given to the changes that occurred in student behavior, particularly …
Constitutional Reform In North Dakota, Darrel J. Alm
Constitutional Reform In North Dakota, Darrel J. Alm
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis attempts to show that the constitution of North Dakota, adopted in 1889, is not capable of serving the needs of modern state government.
The debates of the constitutional convention are discussed to show why many of the provisions were incorporated. Proposed constitutional amendments and initiated and referred statutory measures are reviewed to show the type of changes which have been undertaken. The various studies conducted for the purpose of revision are discussed and their recommendations given. The calling of the constitutional convention scheduled for 1972 is also described.
Attempts at revising the constitution of North Dakota have met …

An Evaluation Of The Concepts Of Delegation Held By Middle Management In The Computer Industry, Paul Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
This study is an investigation into the modern theory of delegation of authority as viewed by middle managers. Seven theoretical principles of delegation are set forth and seven obstacles to the efficient use of delegation. An empirical study was made by surveying a number of middle managers at the Honeywell corporation, Minneapolis Minnesota. Personal interviews and a questionnaire were used to determine the attitudes of various managers toward delegation principles and practices. An analysis of the data indicated a number of obstacles~ in the practice of delegation; the author suggests elimination of these problem areas will require both a procedural …

A Proposed Course Of Study For Prospective Secondary Education Teachers Of The Social Sciences In The Use Of Educational Media And Media Centers, Shelby Strand, Joe Abbott, Paulette Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that prospective teachers have a very limited knowledge of educational media and media centers, and that little is presently being done to correct this deficiency. The intent of this study was to develop a course of instruction which would give the prospective secondary teacher of the social sciences the knowledge and acquaintanceship necessary to enable him to make intelligent and effective use of educational media and the school media center.
The course was first planned in advance and then actually taught to a group of secondary education majors in the social sciences. A day-to-day account of the …
Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon
Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon
Theses and Dissertations
The acclaim and recognition attributed to the musical performers of the eighteenth century are reflected in the title Bel Canto ascribed to this period. The contemporary musical scene reveals performances attempting to perpetuate the virtuosity of the performers of this period and to recapture their style. Unfortunately, the aura of legend and mystery surrounding the performance of music of this period frequently leads to confusion and frustration of both teacher and performer rather than to understanding. This study addresses itself to that problem.
Tosi and Mancini were active participants in this period and their theory, technique of performance, and pedagogical …

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker
Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Articles have recently appeared by Erickson (1968) and Pfaff (1969) which propose that the study of the activity of a large population of neurons may contribute information about sensory coding which is supplementary to data obtained from single neuron studies. These authors propose that there are not enough neurons in the primary sensory pathways so that every stimulus can be represented by a separate neuron. They maintain that over-all measures of neuronal activity will be more fruitful in the study of sensory coding. The present study used such a measure (multiple unit techniques) to monitor the over-all discharge characteristics of …

A Comparison Of Biological Characteristics Of Goldeye, Hiodon Alosoides (Rafinesque), In Garrison Reservoir, Donald Eugene Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Age and growth and other biological characteristics of goldeye were compared at five widely separated stations on Garrison Reservoir in 1968 and 1969. All samples were collected with experimental gill nets fished near the surface. In 1968, goldeye comprised 88.56 percent of the total catch of 1,381 and in 1969, they made up 94.42 percent of the total catch of 2,230 fish. It was found that growth patterns of goldeye at the various stations were statistically different, which may be attributed to the differences in turbidity, temperature and possibly other limnologic conditions. Although statistical differences were found the actual differences …

To this end the major purposes of this study were:
- 1. to determine the relationship that exists between teacher ranking of children in three areas of social behavior: "socially adjusted" behavior, "antisocial" behavior, and "withdrawn" behavior and scores of the child on the related subsections of the California Test of Personality.
- to determine the relationship that exists between the teacher ranking of children on the above …
A Study Of Mignon's Lied In Selected Settings, Robert E. Norton
A Study Of Mignon's Lied In Selected Settings, Robert E. Norton
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this study is the various treatments given by composers to a twelve line poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The text is the common factor over which the differences of approach and treatment are laid by composers in compositions which range in time of initial publication from 1796 to 1888. The condition of the Lied immediately prior to the publication of the first of the settings is taken as the starting point, since all of the chosen settings may be classified as Lieder. The composers whose works are discussed are Karl F. Zelter, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz …

A Three State Markov Model For Paired Associate Learning, Thomas R. Linscheid
A Three State Markov Model For Paired Associate Learning, Thomas R. Linscheid
Theses and Dissertations
The continuity-noncontinuity issue remains a focus for both the theoretical and experimental inquiry into the fundamental nature of the learning process. Although experimental studies of paired-associate learning have often disclosed continuities, mathematical models incorporating all-or-none processes have generally fit the data quite well. The most basic of these is the one-element model proposed by Bower in 1961. The model assumes only two states, a learned state and an unlearned state. Transitions from the unlearned to the learned state occur with a fixed probability which is constant across trials. Extensions and modifications of the Bower model have consisted basically of the …

Support Or Nonthreat? An Investigation Of An Ambiguity In The Concept Of The Ego Support Value, Valerie Lynn Hansen
Support Or Nonthreat? An Investigation Of An Ambiguity In The Concept Of The Ego Support Value, Valerie Lynn Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
The investigation was designed to explore the concept of ego support. It was hypothesized that Wright's direct reward of ego support was not an unitary concept but a dual one, consisting of a support Component and a eomfort component. The investigation was divided into two parts: one part tested the independence of the two components; the second part attempted to determine if Target Persons independently designated as varying in comfort value and support value could be validly identified using the Acquaintance Description Form and a supplementary questionnaire. For Study II same sex, well acquainted pairs of subjects were asked to …
