Feral horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) represent an iconic era of the North Dakota Badlands. Their uncertain history raises management questions regarding origins, genetic diversity, and long-term genetic viability. Hair samples with follicles were collected from 196 horses in the Park and used to sequence the control region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and to profile 12 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) markers. Three mtDNA haplotypes found in the TRNP horses belonged to haplogroups L and B. The control region variation was low with haplotype diversity of 0.5271, nucleotide diversity of 0.0077 and mean pairwise difference of 2.93. We …
The Impact Of Translation On Constructed Action And Constructed Dialogue In Asl Texts, Beth C. Gray
The Impact Of Translation On Constructed Action And Constructed Dialogue In Asl Texts, Beth C. Gray
Theses and Dissertations
Depiction, a phenomenon similar to iconicity, involves representing what something "looks like or is like" (Streeck 2008:289). Because depiction is used more heavily in sign languages than spoken languages (Dudis 2007), people interpreting or translating spoken/written texts into signed languages struggle to use depiction naturally (Thumann 2011). This thesis analyzes constructed action (CA) and constructed dialogue (CD), two types of depiction in which the signer's hands represent those of a discourse participant. Using Tannen (1989) & Metzger's (1995) framework of non-directly-quoted CACD and Quinto-Pozos & Mehta's (2010) degrees of CA, I examine differences between narratives originally composed in ASL and …

Detecting Wildlife In Unmanned Aerial Systems Imagery Using Convolutional Neural Networks Trained With An Automated Feedback Loop, Connor Bowley, Marshall Bowley, Andrew Barnas, Susan Ellis-Felege, Travis Desell
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Using automated processes to detect wildlife in uncontrolled outdoor imagery in the field of wildlife ecology is a challenging task. This is especially true in imagery provided by an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), where the relative size of wildlife is small and visually similar to its background. This work presents an automated feedback loop which can be used to train convolutional neural networks with extremely unbalanced class sizes, which alleviates some of these challenges. This work utilizes UAS imagery collected by the Wildlife@Home project, which has employed citizen scientists and trained experts to go through collected UAS imagery and classify …

A Systematic Literature Review For Evidence Of Aphanizomenon Flos-Aquae Toxigenicity In Recreational Waters And Toxicity Of Dietary Supplements: 2000–2017, Amber Lyon-Colbert, Shelley Su, Curtis Cude
Kinesiology & Public Health Education Faculty Publications
Previous studies of recreational waters and blue-green algae supplements (BGAS) demonstrated co-occurrence of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) and cyanotoxins, presenting exposure risk. The authors conducted a systematic literature review using a GRADE PRISMA-p 27-item checklist to assess the evidence for toxigenicity of AFA in both fresh waters and BGAS. Studies have shown AFA can produce significant levels of cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxin in fresh waters. Toxicity studies evaluating AFA-based BGAS found some products carried the mcyE gene and tested positive for microcystins at levels ≤ 1 μg microcystin (MC)-LR equivalents/g dry weight. Further analysis discovered BGAS samples had cyanotoxins levels exceeding tolerable …

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, is a vector-borne bacterial infection that is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. If not treated with antibiotics during the early stages of infection, disseminated infection can spread to the central nervous system (CNS). In non-human primates (NHPs) it has been demonstrated that the leptomeninges are among the tissues colonized by B. burgdorferi spirochetes. Although the NHP model parallels aspects of human borreliosis, a small rodent model would be ideal to study the trafficking of spirochetes and immune cells into the CNS. Here we show that during early and late …

Forensic Entomology And The Order Coleoptera, Carrie Pratt
Forensic Entomology And The Order Coleoptera, Carrie Pratt
Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
Medico-legal forensic entomology is the study of insects to aid in determining time, place, manner, and cause of death. Identification of the postmortem interval (PMI), or the time that has passed since a person has died, is arguably one of the most important pieces of information that forensic entomology can provide. The PMI can be found using either insect developmental rates or entomofaunal succession, the arrival of different insects at a body at different time points.
The largest group of insects, the beetles, is the order Coleoptera, which contains 25% of all animal species. Members of this order are critical …

Tangos Before Sunrise, Sunset And Midnight: A Conversational Journey With Jesse And Celine, Randy Rasmussen
Librarian Publications
Stripping the story of a romantic relationship down to its essentials, then fiercely delving into the details and potential variations of those essentials, director Richard Linklater and his collaborators created a unique trilogy of films spanning eighteen years in both real and fictional time. In Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013), two appealing yet flawed characters meet by chance on a train headed for Vienna, risk extending their acquaintance during a one-night tour of the city, then spend the next two decades either brooding about or deeply engaged with each other.
The journey of Jesse (Ethan …

Tangling With Dragons: Growing Up Fairy Tale Style In Tangled And How To Train Your Dragon, Randy Rasmussen

Animated movies are often, though not always, the modem equivalent of literary fairy tales. In the mid-1970's Bruno Bettelheim published a fascinating study of classic fairy tales entitled The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales. I thought it might be interesting to apply a few of his theories to three of my favorite animated films: Tangled, How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2.
The inclusion of one Disney Studios movie with two from Dreamworks is not entirely arbitrary. Tangled is an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Rapunzel," …

The biodiversity and high productivity of coastal terrestrial and aquatic habitats are the foundation for important benefits to human societies around the world. These globally distributed habitats need frequent and broad systematic assessments, but field surveys only cover a small fraction of these areas. Satellite-based sensors can repeatedly record the visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra that contain the absorption, scattering, and fluorescence signatures of functional phytoplankton groups, colored dissolved matter, and particulate matter near the surface ocean, and of biologically structured habitats (floating and emergent vegetation, benthic habitats like coral, seagrass, and algae). These measures can be incorporated into Essential …
