The Heterogeneity Of Victim Impact Statements: A Content Analysis Of Capital Trial Sentencing Penalty Phase Transcripts, Bryan Myers, Narina Nuñez, Benjamin Wilkowski, Andre Kehn, Katheirne Dunn
Psychology Faculty Publications
Victim impact statements (VISs) are controversial in capital sentencing proceedings largely due to their questionable relevance to sentencing, the concern that characterizations of the victim may lead to arbitrary sentencing judgments, and the belief that the emotional nature of this evidence may be inflammatory. A sample of 192 capital trial VIS transcripts was analyzed for content as well as a linguistic analysis of emotionality. The findings reveal that these statements are highly varied, including their format, length, and relation between the witness and the victim. Despite a legislative mandate that they address the emotional, financial, and physical suffering experienced by …

The Neuroprotective Effects Of Targeted Temperature Management On Post-Cardiac Arrest Patients, Timothy Hovde
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Novel methods of ensuring survival following cardiac arrest and resuscitation are of supreme importance to the medical community. Targeted temperature management (TTM) has become increasingly utilized pre-hospital, in emergency departments, and within intensive care units to increase the likelihood of survival to hospital discharge. TTM has further been used to attempt to improve neurological functioning. The efficacy and mechanism behind TTM remains poorly understood. In several patient populations it also remains unproven. The purpose of this study is to assess the physiological mechanism, survival, neurological recovery and methodology of TTM use and implementation.
Literature review was utilized to assess the …

Animal-Assisted Intervention For Healthcare Professionals: An Occupational Therapy Facilitated Program, Samantha Coyle, Caitlin Duggan
Animal-Assisted Intervention For Healthcare Professionals: An Occupational Therapy Facilitated Program, Samantha Coyle, Caitlin Duggan
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Introduction: This scholarly project explores literature regarding Animal-Assisted Interventions and possible impacts on healthcare professionals. Literature published within the past two decades has emphasized the various roles and benefits that the presence of animals may provide within various healthcare settings and with diverse populations. The evidence of animal-assisted interventions has been extensively researched and supported as it pertains to the client or patient involved. The problem is that no one has taken the time to evaluate the benefits that having an animal in the healthcare system may have on healthcare professionals (i.e. therapists, nurses, physicians). Due to the lack …

Occupational Therapy Practice Trends For Occupations Impacted By Puberty In Children With Asd, Sydney Larson, Kelsey Hemberger
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Introduction: Adolescents face physical, social, cognitive, and emotional changes during the developmental stage of puberty. Pubertal changes can be difficult for neurotypical adolescents to cope with, but especially for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, adolescents with ASD experience challenges with adapting to physical and emotional changes, managing new hygiene routines, abiding to social norms, and inappropriate sexual behaviors (Beddows & Brooks, 2016; Cridland, Caputi, Jones, & Magee, 2015; Cridland, Jones, Caputi, & Magee, 2014). While occupational therapy plays a role in helping adolescents with ASD, a lack of occupational therapy literature on this topic leads to unknown …

Differentiating Active And Passive Fatigue States With The Use Of Electroencephalography, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt
Differentiating Active And Passive Fatigue States With The Use Of Electroencephalography, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt
Theses and Dissertations
With advances in automation technology, it is becoming essential to understand how automation affects human operators. A concern for the implementation of automation technology is the interactive effects it has with operator cognitive fatigue. Desmond and Hancock (2001) proposed that two types of fatigue can arise depending on the nature of the task: active and passive. Active fatigue results when operators must make constant perceptual-motor adjustments during high task demands, while passive fatigue results from operators executing little or no perceptual-motor adjustments during low task demands, similar to when automation is employed. The purpose of this study was to use …

Staphylococcal Enterotoxins G And I Elicit Long-Term Anti-Tumor Responses In Humanized Hla-Dq8Αβ Transgenic Mice, Peter Knopick
Theses and Dissertations
Immunotherapies have evolved into a collection of tools used clinically in the treatment of several pathologies. Staphylococcal enterotoxin G and I are potent T cell activators that drive multifaceted immune responses and have been implicated in antitumor responses. The addition of SEG and SEI as useful immunotherapies could be underappreciated as mice do not respond as humans would to superantigen stimulation. HLA-DQ8 mice with established B16-F10 tumors receiving 50μg each SEG and SEI 6 and 9 days post tumor implant resulted in 80% progression free survival >300 days. In comparison, allogeneic C57BL/6 mice did not benefit from SEG/SEI therapy. Remarkably, …
Review Of Genetic And Maternal Effects On Tsd In Reptiles And Identification Of Population Differentiation In Putative Tsd Genes In Chelydra Serpentina, Danielle Roush
Theses and Dissertations
Variation in sex ratio among clutches of eggs from different females is common in reptiles with TSD, but the mechanisms that cause this variation are unknown. In an effort to shed light on these mechanisms, we first critically review literature that examines variation in temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) within species. Genetic variation in TSD and maternal effects on TSD are two major mechanisms that have received attention. We outline the types of experiments and data required to demonstrate that a) genetic variation, b) maternally derived steroids, or c) both factors influence variation in sex ratio among clutches. Next, we compare …

Evaluation Of Movements And Habitat Use Of Suburban Striped Skunks (Mephitis Mephitis) In The Northern Great Plains To Inform Rabies Management, Anna Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
Few studies have investigated the ecology of urban striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) despite their role as a primary rabies vector species paired with an ability to thrive in these landscapes. Our aim was to obtain baseline ecological information with an emphasis on spatial ecology of urban striped skunks in the Northern Great Plains region that is missing in the literature. This information, such as home range, nightly movements, habitat selection, and denning behavior is important for informing rabies management decisions such as the placement of oral rabies vaccine (ORV) baits. We used radio telemetry equipment to track 22 (4M, 18 …

Origin And Preservation Of Organic-Rich Zones And Kukersite Beds Of The Red River Formation (Upper Ordovician), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Spencer Wheeling
Theses and Dissertations
The Red River Formation is North Dakotaâs third most productive hydrocarbon unit. The unit has been interpreted to be self-sourced, but the locations of the source beds has not been thoroughly investigated within the North Dakota portion of the Williston Basin. Using the most current available data, this study investigated the source beds of the Red River Formation. This present study agrees with past studies that there are two source bed types; the first type being a higher organic-rich, thin kukersite bed and the second being a less organic-rich, thicker organic zone. Both types of source beds commonly occur as …
Morphological And Genetic Analysis Of Embryo Specific Mutants In Maize, Dale Cletus Brunelle
Morphological And Genetic Analysis Of Embryo Specific Mutants In Maize, Dale Cletus Brunelle
Theses and Dissertations
The maize zygote normally develops over approximately 45-days into a mature embryo comprised of five or six leaf primordia and several root primordia. The developing embryo passes through the proembryo, transition, coleoptilar and stage 1 (first leaf primordium) morphogenetic stages followed by the iterative formation of additional leaf primordia during stages 2 through 6 according to Abbe and Stein (1954). Using ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) treatment of maize pollen from W22 inbreed we have produced lethal embryo specific (emb) mutants that have no obvious effects on endosperm development except for some reduction in kernel size in some cases. Thirteen emb mutants …

Examining Cultural Identification And Alcohol Use Among College Students, Lynn Martell
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has found American Indians (AI) to demonstrate higher levels of alcohol use than Caucasians (CA); however, recent research has found that AI may be drinking at similar or lower rates than CA. Cultural identification (i.e., degree to which an individual associate with, and represents themselves as a member of a specific cultural group) may be a factor contributing to the level of alcohol use among AI. The current study examined cultural identification and alcohol use among University of North Dakota (UND) AI (n=56) and CA (n=88) college students. Results indicated non-significant differences in alcohol use between cultural identification …
