Graphene Oxide Membranes For Enhancing Water Purification In Terrestrial And Space-Born Applications: State Of The Art, Chris Beulke, Ali Alshami, James Casler, Jeremy Lewis, Maram Al-Sayaghi, Michael A. Hickner
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
We present a compendious review of the literature and state-of-art of the research into graphene oxide (GO) membranes for both terrestrial and space-born water purification applications. The performance of GO membrane is compared to polyamide composite properties broadly used in today's desalination plants as well as to other membranes composed of various polymeric materials. An in-depth comparison is also conducted between GO membranes and the water reclamation system onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Based on empirical data from the literature, GO membranes have the potential to reduce the specific energy consumption in both RO facilities and the ISS by …

Habitat Suitability Analysis For Mountain Lions (Puma Concolor) Recolonization/ Reintroduction In Minnesota, Mbongowo J. Mbuh, Neil Vruno
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
The mountain lion range once extended throughout the state of Minnesota. The breeding population has been greatly reduced with time, new roads, and timber harvesting, which have broken large tracts of contiguous forest into isolated patches that are too small and no longer suitable for the breeding mountain lion population. The objective of this study is to use suitability analysis to determine the most suitable habitat to conserve mountain lion populations threatened by habitat fragmentation. To attain our objective, we created three sub models that contribute to the overarching goal of the suitability model. A habitat sub model was developed …

Reference Tracking In Ethiopian Sign Language, Katelin Jo French
Reference Tracking In Ethiopian Sign Language, Katelin Jo French
Theses and Dissertations
Very little has been written about Ethiopian Sign Language, but the language has obvious differences from more well-studied signed languages. This thesis focuses on striking differences in reference tracking: looking at all the different referring types—lexical items, points, eye gaze, body shift, agreement, and zero reference—and their distribution throughout narrative texts. Through this process, Ethiopian Sign Language has proved different from expectations based on previously studied signed languages. This language uses loci with much more flexibility, depending on role shift alone to strongly establish loci for entities. Another way this language differs from other languages is its lack of entity …
Motivations And Satisfaction Of North Dakota Deer Hunters During A Temporal Decline In Deer Populations, Kristen E. Black, William F. Jensen, Robert Newman, Jason Boulanger
Motivations And Satisfaction Of North Dakota Deer Hunters During A Temporal Decline In Deer Populations, Kristen E. Black, William F. Jensen, Robert Newman, Jason Boulanger
Biology Faculty Publications
Achieving state wildlife agency biological goals for deer (Odocoileus spp.) management may often conflict with hunter desires. Concomitantly, better information is needed to optimize agency deer herd management goals with hunters’ social goals. In 2016, we surveyed 3,000 North Dakota, USA, resident deer hunters using a self-administered mail survey to gain a better understanding of motivations, satisfaction, and hunter demographics that may be used to inform hunter recruitment and retention (HRR) efforts during a period of reduced statewide deer populations. With deer-gun license availability strictly limited, we explored the possibility that some gun hunters may have been engaging …
Some Features Of Participant Reference In Xochapa Mixtec, Laura J. Cline
Some Features Of Participant Reference In Xochapa Mixtec, Laura J. Cline
Theses and Dissertations
Many works have been published about the grammar and phonology of Mixtecan languages, but relatively little has been written about the discourse features of these languages. One of these areas of discourse where relatively little research has been done is that of participant reference.
This thesis explores the features of participant reference in one Mixtec language, Xochapa Mixtec, by examining the use of nouns, pronouns, and deictic phrases in eight Xochapa Mixtec texts. The texts used in this research were transcribed from audio recordings and then analyzed with respect to the participant reference forms they employed. The thesis begins with …

Recent studies have shown that on one hand, tumors need to obtain a sufficient energy supply, and on the other hand they must evade the body’s immune surveillance. Because of their metabolic reprogramming characteristics, tumors can modify the physicochemical properties of the microenvironment, which in turn affects the biological characteristics of the cells infiltrating them. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a subset of T cells that regulate immune responses in the body. They exist in large quantities in the tumor microenvironment and exert immunosuppressive effects. The main effect of tumor microenvironment on Tregs is to promote their differentiation, proliferation, secretion …

Background: Actin filament-associated protein 1 antisense RNA 1 (AFAP1-AS1), a long noncoding RNA, is significantly highly expressed and associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in many cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, we aim to identify the role of AFAP1-AS1 acting as an oncogenic lncRNA to promote NPC metastasis.
Methods: The role of AFAP1-AS1, miR-423-5p, and FOSL2 in NPC metastasis was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase activity assays were used to identify the interaction between AFAP1-AS1, miR-423- 5p, and FOSL2. Additionally, real-time PCR and western blotting were used to assess the …

Background
The associations between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and physical literacy in children are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between CRF, measured using the 20-m shuttle run test (20mSRT), and components of physical literacy among Canadian children aged 8–12 years.
Methods
A total of 9393 (49.9% girls) children, with a mean (SD) age of 10.1 (±1.2) years, from a cross-sectional surveillance study were included for this analysis. The SRT was evaluated using a standardized 15 m or 20 m protocol. All 15 m SRTs were converted to 20mSRT values using a standardized formula. The …

This article examines domestic violence committed by white heterosexual men in a 2010s Norwegian film by a female director. This film stands out for its focus on male perpetrators, not female victims, contributing a fictional presentation of three men who struggle to meet societal norms for parents and partners in the Nordic gender-equal family of the twenty-first century. Eva Sørhaug’s use of cinematic space drills deep to probe the men’s pain, employing both the camera’s perspective and the significance of interiors of family homes to visually assess the male characters as they break. The socially constructed spaces of the kitchen …

Cost, Outcomes, Use, And Perceptions Of Oers In Psychology: A Narrative Review Of The Literature, Virginia Clinton
Educational Foundations and Research Faculty Publications
Open educational resources (OER) have been developed to free students from the expense and instructors from the restrictions of commercial materials. There has been a wealth of empirical examination on numerous aspects of OER. The purpose of this narrative review is to synthesize and integrate the findings on OER in psychology to assist instructors in making informed decisions about course materials. Topics in this review were organized according to the COUP framework of cost, outcomes, use, and perceptions. Results indicated that OER adoption yielded cost savings while generally having similar or better outcomes in terms of grades. Students typically reported …

An Initial Study Of The Catalytic Reforming Of Crop Oil‐Derived 1‐Alkenes With Hzsm‐5 To Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Shelby Amsley‐Benzie, Swapnil Fegade, Brian Tande, Alena Kubatova, Evguenii Kozliak, Wayne Seames
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study explored the production of aromatic hydrocarbons from the longer‐chain alkenes produced by the pyrolysis/cracking of crop oils. 1‐Tetradecene, serving as a model compound for these alkenes, was reformed in a batch reactor with a HZSM‐5 catalyst to produce a liquid hydrocarbon mixture with a high‐aromatic content. These reactions resulted in a >99% conversion of the 1‐tetradecene feedstock with a yield of up to 22 wt% of aromatic hydrocarbons. Surprisingly, isomers of C3‐substituted benzenes along with xylenes and diaromatics (lower homologs of alkyl‐substituted indanes and naphthalenes) were the main aromatic products rather than their lower‐molecular‐weight (MW) homologs, benzene, toluene, …

Therapeutic Synergy With Hyperbaric Medicine: Clinical Experiences In Enhancing Hbot Effects, Paul Anderson
Therapeutic Synergy With Hyperbaric Medicine: Clinical Experiences In Enhancing Hbot Effects, Paul Anderson
International Symposium for Hyperbaric Medicine
Although very little is currently published regarding the use of synergists with HBOT it is an area of great clinical curiosity. For example some animal data using oxidative IV therapies in conjunction with HBOT which showed benefit have had to be modified when transferred to human protocols. Other therapies which have shown theoretical promise have exhibited synergy with HBOT and are emerging as future directions to clinically augment the benefits of HBOT.
Tumor Biology And Hyperbaric Oxygen: Differential Effects In Tumor Versus Normal Tissues, Paul Anderson
Tumor Biology And Hyperbaric Oxygen: Differential Effects In Tumor Versus Normal Tissues, Paul Anderson
International Symposium for Hyperbaric Medicine
When assessing the potential benefits of HBOT in oncology patients occasional confusion arises when extrapolating the cytokine, epigenetic and other effects of HBOT in non-cancerous tissues (neurological and other injuries etc.) versus those in cancerous tissues. This confusion often results in misinterpretation of data and concern over potential harm in HBOT oncology cases. The focus of this presentation is to point out the data supporting these differences as we know it to date and underscore the benefits while decreasing this clinical confusion.
