The Effect Of High Volt Galvanic Stimulation On Blood Flow And Edema Reduction In The Rat., Thomas Michael Mohr Jan 1986

The Effect Of High Volt Galvanic Stimulation On Blood Flow And Edema Reduction In The Rat., Thomas Michael Mohr

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the effect of high volt galvanic (HVG) stimulation on edema reduction and blood flow velocity (BFV) in the rat hindlimb. The effect of various blocking agents on BFV, blood pressure and heart rate following HVG stimulation was also tested. For the edema study, the animal's hindpaw was traumatized; and the animal was assigned to either the treated (n = 20) or control (n = 20) group. Paw volume measurements were made prior to the trauma, and before and after HVG stimulation. For the blood flow studies, a 20 MHz pulsed doppler device was used …

A Relational Grammar Approach To Verb Agreement In Lakota, Gray C. Plunkett, Michael Mckeever Jan 1986

A Relational Grammar Approach To Verb Agreement In Lakota, Gray C. Plunkett, Michael Mckeever

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "This paper examines verb agreement rules and their application in Lakota, a Siouan language. In particular, it explores how to best account for verb agreement in Lakota in a Relational Grammar framework. We will argue that certain concepts of Relational Grammar (RG), especially the notions of level and working 2, provide the necessary theoretical apparatus for formulating concise rules of verb agreement in Lakota. These rules account for all major transitive, ditransitive, and intransitive clause types. It also lends support to Perlmutter's claim that the notion of working term-x is needed to state rules in the grammars …

Reduplication In Majang, Peter Unseth Jan 1986

Reduplication In Majang, Peter Unseth

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Majang is a member of the Nilo-Saharan family of languages, part of the Surma cluster. It is spoken in southwestern Ethiopia in Kefa and Illubador provinces, with a small group also in Wellega. There are only two published linguistic descriptions, one by Cerulli (1948) and a recent, more comprehensive and reliable one by Bender (1983). In his article, Bender gives five examples of verb reduplication in Magang (1983a:121). Building on Bender, this present paper gives many more examples of verb reduplication, explains the different uses of reduplication, and describes the phonological rules for reduplicating. Examples of (possibly) …

Comparative Studies Of The Metal Activation Of The Cytoplasmic And Mitochondrial Forms Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Liver (Gluconeogenesis)., Gertrude Hanke Jacoby Jan 1986

Comparative Studies Of The Metal Activation Of The Cytoplasmic And Mitochondrial Forms Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Liver (Gluconeogenesis)., Gertrude Hanke Jacoby

Theses and Dissertations

The cytoplasmic and mitochondrial isozymes of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) catalyze the reversible decarboxylation and phosphorylation of OAA to PEP with GTP or ITP serving as the phosphoryl donor. The forward reaction is an essential component of the gluconeogenic pathway. The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of metal activation on the forward (decarboxylating) and reverse (carboxylating) reactions of the PEPCK isozmes purified from rabbit liver.A purification procedure for rabbit cytoplasmic PEPCK was developed. The final enzyme preparation was homogeneous as established by SDS-PAGE. Pure cytoplasmic PEPCK and pure mitochondrial PEPCK from rabbit liver exhibit identical electrophoretic behavior …

Regulation Of The Solubility Of Zinc In Milk (Calcium-Phosphate, Co-Precipitation, Iron)., Lowell S. Nelson Jr. Jan 1986

Regulation Of The Solubility Of Zinc In Milk (Calcium-Phosphate, Co-Precipitation, Iron)., Lowell S. Nelson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Humans absorb zinc, iron and copper more readily from human milk than from bovine milk or infant formulae. Given that solubility is requisite to absorption, the solubilities of select components, including zinc, were examined in preparations of bovine and human milk and in model solutions based on the low-molecular-weight components of the two milks. Solubility was examined over a pH range similar to that found in the human digestive system. Factors which could alter zinc solubility were examined by changing the composition of the model solutions and by fortifying milks with various compounds. Each aliquot of the models or milks was …

Part I: The Intraluminal Chemistry Of Calcium, Magnesium And Zinc In Human And Bovine Milks. Part Ii: Complexed Metal Ion Binding To Poly(Acrylic Acid): A Simple Model For In Vivo Metal Ion Binding., Richard Warren Ames Jan 1986

Part I: The Intraluminal Chemistry Of Calcium, Magnesium And Zinc In Human And Bovine Milks. Part Ii: Complexed Metal Ion Binding To Poly(Acrylic Acid): A Simple Model For In Vivo Metal Ion Binding., Richard Warren Ames

Theses and Dissertations

Part I. The bioavailability of calcium, magnesium, and zinc is greater from human milk than bovine milk, even though individual concentration magnitudes are reversed. Reasons for this are investigated by studying the complexation and precipitation reactions of these minerals and the low molecular weight ligands present in both milks at pHs ranging from two to eight. These reactions control the solubility of these minerals and we assume that for a mineral to be bioavailable it must be in solution and arrive at the appropriate intestinal segment for absorption. Techniques used to study mineral solubilities are: computer modelling, synthetic models, and …

The In Vivo And In Vitro Effects Of Pn200-110, A Novel Calcium Channel Blocking Agent (Hypertension)., Steven B. Magill

Theses and Dissertations

PN200-110 is an analogue of the 1,4-dihydropyridine class of calcium antagonists, which have previously been shown to be efficacious in lowering blood pressure in essential hypertension. In our study, PN200-110 was found to be effective in lowering systolic blood pressures both acutely, in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats, and chronically in the hypertensive group. Heart rates were increased above pretreatment values following PN200-110 therapy, but these changes were statistically insignificant. The in vitro binding of (+)- methyl-('3)H PN200-110 to synaptosomal P(,2) membranes was found to be saturable, specific, reversible, temperature-dependent, and of high affinity to a single set of dihydropyridine receptor …
