Cell Membrane Facilitators: Nucleotide-Amine Linkages., Michael Yiu-Ming Chan
Cell Membrane Facilitators: Nucleotide-Amine Linkages., Michael Yiu-Ming Chan
Theses and Dissertations
In order to facilitate the transport of a nucleotide across an artificial lipid bilayer, different amines were conjugated to the phosphate group of adenosine 5$\sp\prime$-phosphate. The effect of the amine conjugation was to enhance the lipophilicity of the consequent adenosine 5$\sp\prime$-phosphoramidate derivative. The synthesis of various nucleoside 5$\sp\prime$-phosphoramidate analogs have been investigated, using different methodologies. Adenosine 5$\sp\prime$-phosphoromorpholidate, 5$\sp\prime$-phosphor(adamantyl)amidate, (n-decyl)amidate, (n-stearyl)amidate, and (1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxo-16-azacyclooctadecyl)amidate were synthesized by adopting Moffatt and Khorana's procedures. Among these phosphoramidate analogs, the adamantyl, aza-18-crown-6, and stearyl derivates have never been reported before. These amine-nucleotides were prepared by refluxing a reaction mixture of the corresponding amine (4 fold excess), …

Preschool Behavioral Precursors Of The Delinquency Of Juvenile Offenders: A Retrospective Study, Kay A. Halverson
Preschool Behavioral Precursors Of The Delinquency Of Juvenile Offenders: A Retrospective Study, Kay A. Halverson
Theses and Dissertations
Early behaviors of juvenile offenders and nonoffenders were studied to assess differences between the two groups. Experimental subjects were 50 youth residing in three northeastern counties of North Dakota who had committed two or more offenses. Control subjects were 50 non-offenders matched for birthdate, sex, and school. Data were collected retrospectively from both groups on Form 1 of the Louisville Behavior Checklist (LBC)» an inventory designed to detect psychopathological behaviors among preschool children. The responses were analyzed in terms of hypotheses that were designed to address (a) which scales of the LBC would show a significant difference between the offender …
The Effects Of Caffeine In Free Recall, Mary Ellen Arnold
The Effects Of Caffeine In Free Recall, Mary Ellen Arnold
Theses and Dissertations
Caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant, is said to produce an elevation in level of arousal. Humphreys and Revelle (1984) have proposed a model to account for changes in information processing efficiency resulting from differences in personality, situational moderators such as caffeine, and type of information processing task. According to the model, a high level of state arousal will result in poor performance on shortterm memory tasks, while improved performance will occur at a low level of arousal. In this experiment, subjects' trait level of arousal, as measured by the impulsivity subscale of the Eysenck Personality Inventory, was manipulated by …

Guided Fantasy: A Tool For Therapy, Marcia L. Healy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using instructed guided fantasy to decrease anxiety in a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It was intended that the child would use guided fantasy to develop an internal coping mechanism for reducing anxiety during a weekly gold shot injection, which was identified as anxiety-producing. An embedded, single-case design was selected for this case study. Qualities of guided fantasy were globally examined. Other aspects of the subject's performance, which were examined included musculoskeletal abilities and limitations, cognitive abilities, ability of the subject to relax via specific relaxation exercises, the subject's …

An Analysis Of The Comic Elements In A Production Of Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Mary Beth J. Barder
Theses and Dissertations
This analysis addresses the classification of a production of Joe Orton's play Entertaining Mr. Sloane as a comedy. Its intent is to question the classification by considering several factors.
The thesis begins with an introduction, contained in Chapter I. Chapter II applies several concepts of comic theory as conceived by Susanne K. Langer, to the play. The third chapter offers the background of the playwright and the play's past reception by theatre critics. Chapter IV deals with the directing of a production of Entertaining Mr. Sloane, presented at the University of North Dakota in November, 1985. It includes a pre-production …
The Effect Of Histamine On Lanthanum (La3+) Binding In The Isolated Rabbit Heart In The Presence Of Verapamil, Scott A. Barman
The Effect Of Histamine On Lanthanum (La3+) Binding In The Isolated Rabbit Heart In The Presence Of Verapamil, Scott A. Barman
Theses and Dissertations
Two of the major effects of histamine in the rabbit heart are the enhancement of contractility and microvascular permeability. In cardiac muscle it has been documented that calcium (Ca ) bound to the sarcolem- mal-glycocalyx complex is essential for the regulation of the contractile response. In addition, it has been postulated that histamine's regulation of microvascular permeability may occur via an endothelial contractile response causing the formation of submicroscopic gaps between endothelial cells. It was postulated that these effects of histamine may in- O . volve an alteration of Ca r binding to the plasma membranes of these tissues. In …

The Invention Of Oz, Janet Faye Daley Lysengen
The Invention Of Oz, Janet Faye Daley Lysengen
Theses and Dissertations
Since L. Frank Baum published his first Oz book in 1900, Oz has become an integral part of American society; yet, only recently have his books begun to receive critical attention. Critics seem most interested in dealing with them in terms of sociology, popular culture, and psychology, but a few have recognized Baum's contributions to the birth of science fiction, to the depiction of a female hero in Dorothy, and to Baum's imaginative and perceptive examination of what separates humans from machines. This thesis will analyze the literary dimension of the Oz series. The goal will be to perceive the …

Serotonergic Mediation In The Activity Of Anticonvulsant Compounds (Neurotransmitter, Diazepam, Phenytoin)., Larry Marvin Leadbetter
Serotonergic Mediation In The Activity Of Anticonvulsant Compounds (Neurotransmitter, Diazepam, Phenytoin)., Larry Marvin Leadbetter
Theses and Dissertations
The role of the central nervous system neurotransmitter serotonin was evaluated on the anticonvulsant activity of various compounds. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is known to have an inhibitory role in central nervous system activity. A facilitation of the anticonvulsant activity of benzodiazepines has previously been attributed to increased serotonin activity.Male white mice of the ICR strain were administered varying doses of phenytoin, 5-ethyl, 5-methylhydantoin (EMH) and JAW-669, then challenged with maximal electroshock. The occurrence of seizures was used to evaluate the degree of protection provided by a given dose of anticonvulsant. The role of serotonin on the anticonvulsant activity of these compounds was …
Effects Of Zinc Deficiency On Sertoli Cell Number And Ultrastructure: An In Vivo And In Vitro Study., Gro Thorne-Tjomsland
Effects Of Zinc Deficiency On Sertoli Cell Number And Ultrastructure: An In Vivo And In Vitro Study., Gro Thorne-Tjomsland
Theses and Dissertations
Hypogonadism in the male is a well known clinical symptom of zinc deficiency. The testicular lesions have been primarily attributed to the effects of decreased zinc on germ cells. This study assessed possible effects of zinc deficiency on Sertoli cell number and ultrastructure.Long-Evans dams and their newborn litters were placed on zinc deficient (ZD), pair-fed or ad libitum fed (AL) diets. All dams received a 20% egg white based diet containing less than one ppm zinc. ZD dams received distilled, deionized water (<1 ppm ZN), while PF and AL dams received the above water fortified with 25 ppm zinc. Male pups were sacrificed day 10 and their testes were processed for light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).LM cell counts were performed on one (mu)m sections. Average number of germ cells on the basement membrane (BM) (=GC2) per tubular cross-section was reducted by two-thirds in ZD and PF compared to AL animals (p < 0.0001). Average number of germ cells not on the BM (=GC1) and average number of Sertoli cells per tubular cross-section were not statistically different in the three diet groups.Volume fractions of TEM subcompartments/total cytoplasm were determined by morphometric methods. The lysosome-like fraction was doubled in ZD and PF compared to AL animals (p < 0.05). Endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi and mitochondrial fractions were not statistically different in the three diet groups.Five day old Sertoli cell cultures derived from ZD, PF and AL pups were volumetrically analyzed as in vivo. The endoplasmic reticulum fraction was approximately 100% lower in ZD- than in AL-derived cultures (p < 0.01). Golgi, mitochondrial, dense body and inclusion body fractions were similar in ZD-, PF- and AL-derived cultures. These data suggest that Sertoli cells, although not significantly reduced in number in ZD and PF animals, were affected ultrastructurally by dietary treatment. The volumetric increase in lysosome-like bodies in vivo suggested that Sertoli cells participate in phagocytosis of germ cells degenerating as a result of dietary treatment. The decreased ER volume fraction of ZD-derived tissue cultured Sertoli cells suggested that Sertoli cell secretory potential may be altered as a result of zinc deficiency.
