Surface Coat Material Associated With The Developing Otic Vesicle, Allan R. Sinning Aug 1985

Surface Coat Material Associated With The Developing Otic Vesicle, Allan R. Sinning

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the development of the otic placode/vesicle and the concurrent synthesis of an associated cell surface coat material (SCM) in the chick embryo. This was accomplished by means of precipitation of the glycoconjugate constituents of the SCM with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and subsequent observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cryofixation and freeze-substitution were utilized to validate the results of CPC precipitation. In addition, specific sugar moieties present within the SCM were characterized, in part, using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated lectins.

Embryos utilized for SEM were incubated for 45-56 hours (stages 12-16), fixed in …

Brood Parasitism And Reproduction Of Canvasbacks And Redheads On The Delta Marsh, Rodney D. Sayler May 1985

Brood Parasitism And Reproduction Of Canvasbacks And Redheads On The Delta Marsh, Rodney D. Sayler

Theses and Dissertations

I studied brood parasitism and breeding ecology of canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria) and redheads (A. americana) nesting on the Delta Marsh near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, from 1977 to 1980. The dissertation focuses on 3 aspects of this investigation: 1) the role of prairie drought in influencing pochard reproductive performance, including a comprehensive review of hypotheses explaining evolution of brood parasitism in waterfowl (Anatidae), 2) behavioral ecology and evolution of host/parasite interactions, and 3) development of improved redhead aging techniques by using cluster analysis.

Redheads shifted egg distributions from eggs in redhead nests to eggs laid parasitically in canvasback nests during …

Following A Leg Of Mutton, The Pastoral In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Priscilla Homola May 1985

Following A Leg Of Mutton, The Pastoral In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Priscilla Homola

Theses and Dissertations

Much critical attention has quite rightly been focused in recent years on the epic and heroic qualities of Roelvaag's Giants in the Earth. However, Giants in the Earth is not all epic--partly because Roelvaag perceives the settling of the Plains by Scandinavian immigrants with mixed feelings: on the one hand, wishing to rekindle in them a sense of their serious destiny in the New World; on the other, longing for a return to the lost values of his own Norwegian youth. Hence, far from glorifying epic struggle or extolling heroic virtues, Roelvaag rather emphasizes pastoral virtues somewhat at variance with …

Referential Distance And Discourse Structure In Yagua, Thomas E. Payne Jan 1985

Referential Distance And Discourse Structure In Yagua, Thomas E. Payne

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "This paper concerns Yagua, a lowland language of Peru. It also concerns the choices speakers make as to how they will refer to or "code" participants in discourse. The body of this paper will be organized into two broad parts corresponding to these two most general concerns. In the first part, consisting of Sect. 2, I will describe the major formal devices used to code participants in Yagua. In the second part, Sect. 3 and 4, I will look at the use of those devices in a body of folkloric narrative texts. I will take as a …

Some Aspects Of Zapotecan Clausal Syntax, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In this paper I discuss pronouns and various syntactic constructions in Zapotecan (Z) languages. My major goal is to present a broad overview of the similarities and differences which exist among the various members of the Zapotecan group in these syntactic constructions, which I generally discuss in theory-neutral terms."

Ñumí Mixtec Syllable Structure And Morphology, Laura Gittlen, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1985

Ñumí Mixtec Syllable Structure And Morphology, Laura Gittlen, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "[...] we discuss the morphology and segmental morphophonemics of Mixtec in a degree of detail which has never been done before. The most novel aspect of our work below, for Mixtec studies, is that we posit underlying forms for the two tense prefixes and then account for the variety of surface forms. Since in many--indeed, in a majority--of situations the underlying segments are not present in the surface form, the analysis is not immediately obvious."

A Quantitative Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion Processes, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Mark D. Millsop Jan 1985

A Quantitative Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion Processes, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Mark D. Millsop

Theses and Dissertations

Shoreline erosion is a problem at Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon, North Dakota. Land is lost, water quality is adversely affected, and reservoir storage capacity is decreased.

Instrumentation of the eastern shores of both lakes began in 1983 to quantify bank erosion by process (e.g., wave erosion, rainsplash and runoff, and frost-thaw failure). Other data gathered included: pool level fluctuations; wind velocity, direction, and duration; precipita tion; soil moisture; frost penetration; freeze-thaw cycles; and geology (e.g., texture, clay mineralogy and structure).

The magnitude of shoreline erosion is highly variable, especially within Lake Sakakawea. For the interval of May 1983 through …

Occurrence And Survival Of Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In Waste Treatment Systems; R Factor Transmission To A Methyl Parathion Degrading Bacterium (North Dakota)., Michael Vincent Walter Jan 1985

Occurrence And Survival Of Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In Waste Treatment Systems; R Factor Transmission To A Methyl Parathion Degrading Bacterium (North Dakota)., Michael Vincent Walter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was twofold. First, determine (1) the existence of multiple antibiotic resistant coliforms (MAR) in the sewage system of Grand Forks, (2) relative numbers of origin, (3) seasonal variation, (4) elimination by the sewage treatment system and, (5) rates of MAR transfer to a receiver organism. The second phase was to determine if MAR could be transferred into a methyl parathion degrading Flavobacterium aquatile (F. aquatile) and test its suitability as a genetic marker, and determine if this organism could survive in primary lagoon sewage (PLS) in competition with indigenous microorganisms.Grab samples of sewage were collected …

Characterization Of Humoral Responsiveness Of Cattle And Guinea Pigs To Infestations With Ixodid Ticks (Acquired Resistance, Dermacentor Andersoni)., A. Christian Whelen Jan 1985

Characterization Of Humoral Responsiveness Of Cattle And Guinea Pigs To Infestations With Ixodid Ticks (Acquired Resistance, Dermacentor Andersoni)., A. Christian Whelen

Theses and Dissertations

Cattle and laboratory animals develop resistance to infestation with ixodid ticks following a sensitizing exposure. Antigenic substances introduced during feeding stimulate immune effector mechanisms that include antibody, cell-mediated immunity, complement, and other soluble mediators. Resistance is expressed by immunopathological modulation of normal tick feeding and development processes.Acquired resistance and immune responsiveness of ixodid infested Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle has been investigated. Ixodid salivary gland antigen (SGA) specific, and cross-reactive, IgG response curves were determined by dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA). Immunoglobulin titer did not necessarily correlate directly with levels of resistance, indicating the importance of other immune defense …

Late Quaternary Environmental And Climatic History Of The Southern Chilean Lake Region Interpreted From Coleopteran (Beetle) Assemblages, John W. Hoganson Jan 1985

Late Quaternary Environmental And Climatic History Of The Southern Chilean Lake Region Interpreted From Coleopteran (Beetle) Assemblages, John W. Hoganson

Theses and Dissertations

A diverse Coleoptera fauna of 462 species in 48 families was collected from 41 locations in the Parque Nacional de Puyehue and adjacent parts of the Lake Region of southern Chile. The sample locations ranged from rain forest habitats at sea-level to Andean tundra habitats at 1500 m msl. Cluster analysis of a Dice similarity coefficient matrix revealed a broad pattern of bioassociations within the large data base, Boundaries between the bioassociations correspond largely with those of the major vegetation zones implying that the distribution of the fauna is strongly influenced by the distribution of plants. Evidence from fossils indicates …

A Qualitative Study Of Beliefs, Values, And Practice In Literacy Education: Portraits Of Three High School Teaching & Learning Teachers, Karla Smart

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a description of teachers and teaching. The lived-in experience, including memory, beliefs and values, and teaching practice, of three high school teachers of Teaching & Learning is its concern. Literacy is the study's entry point, the concept that drew me to seek conversation and classroom observation with Teaching & Learning teachers. Observation, in-depth interview, conversation, and my own journal writing as researcher are its processes of information gathering. The meanings individual Teaching & Learning teachers ascribe to literacy in their own lives and in their teaching practices are described in this study. Teachers' personal recollections clustered around the …

Individual Differences In Prose Memory Recall And Eeg Activation As A Function Of Personality (Arousal, Laterality, Attention), Rodney Allen Swenson Jan 1985

Individual Differences In Prose Memory Recall And Eeg Activation As A Function Of Personality (Arousal, Laterality, Attention), Rodney Allen Swenson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated a theoretical model of neuroattentional self-control systems postulated by Tucker and Williamson (1984) by examining how the systems they outline present themselves behaviorally. One system, the Activation system, was described as functionally important for preparing the organism for maintaining a tonic, motoric readiness for action. It is complemented by an Arousal system, whose main function was to perceptually orient the central nervous system to novelty in the stimulus array. The former was postulated to be left-lateralized while the latter was said to be right-lateralized, in terms of hemispheric specialization. To examine this model, 40 subjects (20 …

Reactions To Personality Test Feedback As A Function Of Attribution (Weiner, Locus, Stability, Controllability)., Daniel Eric Rubanowitz Jan 1985

Reactions To Personality Test Feedback As A Function Of Attribution (Weiner, Locus, Stability, Controllability)., Daniel Eric Rubanowitz

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on Weiner's (1979) model of attribution, attribution tendencies of therapists and clients, and the Barnum effect was discussed and integrated. An experiment was conducted in which the Barnum effect was investigated as a function of attribution. Subjects took a battery of personality tests that was composed of measures which previous research has related to the Barnum effect or to attributional styles. Later, subjects received handwritten personality interpretations, purportedly based on their test results and supposedly derived by a clinical psychologist. The feedback contained "Barnum" statements which indicated that the subject had decision making difficulties. In the feedback, subjects …

A Genetic, Ultrastructural, And Tissue Culture Study Of Five Embryo-Lethal Maize Mutants (Desk, Developmental)., Janice Kay Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The genetics and development of 5 embryo-lethal maize mutants defective in early embryogenesis were studied by genetic, histological, ultrastructural, and tissue culture techniques. The mutants examined were cp*-E1113A (dek22) on 1L, dcr*-E1428 (dek23) on 2L, rgh*-E1210, fl*-E1253B, and cp*-E1399A. They were found to be non-allelic. Long term studies of chromosome arm location by the Twaxy translocation stocks and mapping of cp*-E1113A and dcr*-E1428 with multiple linkage marker stocks were initiated. Three mutants lacked leaf primordia at kernel maturity, while two made leaf primordia but were unable to germinate. Embryos of cp*-E1113A became blocked at the transition stage but remained morphologically …
