College Students' Use Of Genderlect, Laurie Patricia Light May 1987

College Students' Use Of Genderlect, Laurie Patricia Light

Theses and Dissertations

Genderlect is linguistic performance characteristic of gender groups (Kramer, 1974). The present study was designed to investigate genderlect in the form of noun usage among college students. The specific purpose of this study was to determine if there were noun choosing differences between male and female subjects in referencing the concepts “adult male" and "adult female"; and, if present, did the sex of the subjects and/or sex role of the subjects effect the differences.

This purpose was accomplished by collecting, a written language sample from each of 45 male and 50 female subjects. The subjects were shown a series of …

Studies On The Enzymes Involved In Futile Cycling Between Hepatic Glucose And Glucose-6-Phosphate., Roger Robert Traxinger Jan 1987

Studies On The Enzymes Involved In Futile Cycling Between Hepatic Glucose And Glucose-6-Phosphate., Roger Robert Traxinger

Theses and Dissertations

Glucose-6-phosphatase, EC 3.1.3.9, and glucokinase, EC 2.7.1.2, catalyze opposing reactions in rat liver, reactions 1 and 2 below. The presence of these opposing reactions allows futile cycling between glucose and glucose-6-P to occur in liver which results in the net hydrolysis of ATP, reaction 3 below.(UNFORMATTED TABLE OR EQUATION FOLLOWS)$$\eqalignno{\hbox{Glucose + ATP} &{\buildrel \hbox{Glucokinase}\over\longrightarrow}\hbox{Glucose-6-P + ADP}&(1)\cr \hbox{Glucose-6-P + H$\sb2$O}&{\buildrel \hbox{Glucose-6-P'ase}\over\longrightarrow} \hbox{Glucose + Pi}&(2)\cr \hbox{ATP + H$\sb2$O}&\longrightarrow \hbox{ADP + Pi}&(3)\cr}$$(TABLE/EQUATION ENDS) In an attempt to answer the question, "To what extent is glucose-6-phosphatase involved in the regulation of (glucose-6-P) and futile cycling between hepatic glucose and glucose-6-P?", the following aspects of …

Construction Of A Biotyping System For Differential Identification Of Strains Of Staphylococcus Aureus., Judy Kae Magnuson Jan 1987

Construction Of A Biotyping System For Differential Identification Of Strains Of Staphylococcus Aureus., Judy Kae Magnuson

Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive, catalase-positive, coagulase positive, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic coccus usually arranged in irregular clusters that commonly causes pustules, carbuncles, impetigo, cellulitis, and post-surgical wound infections. S. aureus also causes septicemia, endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, exfoliative skin disease, scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, and food poisoning. The method currently used for distinguishing among strains of Staphylococcus aureus is bacteriophage typing. The goal of this research was to develop a biotyping system for differentiating among strains of S. aureus. The parameters selected for the biotyping system included: DNase, phosphatase, gelatinase, urease, arginine decarboxylase, fermentation of mannitol, galactose, lactose, maltose, …

A Study Of The Binding Of Copper(Ii)-Amine Complexes To Polyacrylic Acid., Marilyn Elizabeth Martin Jan 1987

A Study Of The Binding Of Copper(Ii)-Amine Complexes To Polyacrylic Acid., Marilyn Elizabeth Martin

Theses and Dissertations

A study of the binding of copper(II)-amine complexes to polyacrylic acid was undertaken. Experimental binding curves were generated for polyacrylic acid having molecular weights of 11,050 and 1600 at an ionic strength of.5M and also at an ionic strength of.1M for the 11,050 molecular weight sample. An analysis of the experimental data indicates that the coordinating species is copper(II)-triamine. The formation curves were fit to analytical binding models and it was found that the higher molecular weight polyions exhibit cooperative behavior. The copper(II)-triamine PAA M$\sb{\rm n}$ 11,050 system at an ionic strength of.5M has seven coordinated ligands with an intrinsic …

Breeding Biology, Intrasexual Competition, And Philopatry In Wilson's Phalarope (Phalaropus Tricolor) (Canada)., Mark Allen Colwell Jan 1987

Breeding Biology, Intrasexual Competition, And Philopatry In Wilson's Phalarope (Phalaropus Tricolor) (Canada)., Mark Allen Colwell

Theses and Dissertations

Intrasexual competition among males is a dominant feature of the mating system of most animals. Far fewer species exhibit female-female competition for mates. However, species showing reversal of the typical sex roles afford special opportunities to evaluate evolutionary generalities concerning sexual selection and mating systems.I studied Wilson's phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor), a sex-role reversed, nonterritorial shorebird, from 1982-1986 at Last Mountain Lake Wildlife Management Unit in southcentral Saskatchewan, Canada. Phalaropes were individually marked and data on breeding biology were recorded during daily observation periods. I focal sampled individual male phalaropes to assess weekly changes in the intensity of female-female competition for …

Histamine Receptors And Cyclic-Amp Levels In Rabbit Coronary Arteries., Dale Arthur Schuschke Jan 1987

Histamine Receptors And Cyclic-Amp Levels In Rabbit Coronary Arteries., Dale Arthur Schuschke

Theses and Dissertations

Histamine is known to cause an H$\sb 1$-receptor mediated vasoconstriction and an H$\sb2$-receptor mediated vasodilation in the coronary vasculature of the rabbit heart. In this study we looked at the role that the adenyl cyclase-cyclic AMP system plays in mediation of the histamine response in the vascular smooth muscle. Change in perfusion pressure in the isolated rabbit heart was used as the index of change in vascular tone when histamine was added to the perfusate. The vascular response to histamine was then studied while cAMP levels were altered by adenyl cyclase potentiation and phosphodiesterase inhibition. After the physiological responses of …
