The Spiritual Dimension Of Social Work Practice In And Through Research, Education, And Life Experience, Pauline Kay Burthwick

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years there has been an effort to reintroduce religion and spirituality as tangible constructs into social work education and practice in an effort to incorporate all aspects of the client's system (biological, psychological, social, spiritual) and to understand and appreciate the client's diversity and potential strengths and resources. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of social work practitioners as it relates to their social work practice and to the education of future social workers.

This study was composed of two parts. The first was a secondary data …

Predicting Post-Disaster Adjustment After The Red River Flood: An Analysis Of Resource Loss And Pre-Flood Preventative Behaviors, Holly J. Hegstad Dec 1999

Predicting Post-Disaster Adjustment After The Red River Flood: An Analysis Of Resource Loss And Pre-Flood Preventative Behaviors, Holly J. Hegstad

Theses and Dissertations

The Conservation of Resources theory postulates that individuals will act to obtain, retain, or protect those resources that are of value to them (Hobfall, 1989). Natural disasters often result in depletion of resources, the extent of which has been found to be a robust predictor of post-disaster adjustment (Freedy, Hobfall, & Ribbe, 1994; Freedy, Shaw, Jarrel, & Masters, 1992; Norris & Uhl, 1993; Smith & Freedy, 1994). Three-hundred-four victims (131 males, 171 females) of the 1997 flood of the Red River returned surveys assessing their levels of preparation, resource losses, and psychopathology 12 to 16 months after the flood. It …

The Good Morrow., Jane Varley Jul 1999

The Good Morrow., Jane Varley

Theses and Dissertations

“The Good Morrow” is a collection of original poetry that explores the idea of place. The poetry cites various landscapes across a large map of geography and imagination, beginning with poems, in section one, that make reference to conventional homes we grow up in and often move away from. The second and third sections involve a psychological exploration of home, investigating movement among domestic space, cities, and natural landscapes. The speakers in the poems might be thought of as “sea-discoverers,” as John Donne wrote, who explore the world and in the process make discoveries about the worlds inside themselves. I …

Non-Metal Detection For Supercritical Fluid Extraction Using An Infrared And An Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer., Shijiang Liang

Theses and Dissertations

Soil contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons is a very serious environmental problem. In conventional methods such as Soxhlet and Sonication, toxic halogenated solvents such as Freon-113 or CH3Cl are used for the extraction of these pollutants and GC-FID or GC-MS for detection. This dissertation will focus on both the development of non-toxic alternatives to conventional solvents for the extraction and new detection methods. Method 1. On-line dynamic CO2 SFE-IR spectrometry using a fiber optic filter photometer. The research will involve the construction of an IR cell, CO2 SFE coupling with an IR photometer, determination of detection limit and the determinations of …

The Beta Subunit Determines The Nucleotide Specificity Of Atp-Specific And Gtp-Specific Succinyl-Coa Synthetases In Vertebrates., James Darwin Johnson Jul 1999

The Beta Subunit Determines The Nucleotide Specificity Of Atp-Specific And Gtp-Specific Succinyl-Coa Synthetases In Vertebrates., James Darwin Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Two isoforms of succinyl-CoA synthetase (SCS) have been purified from breast muscle and liver in pigeon, one highly specific for adenine nucleotides (A-SCS), the other for guanine nucleotides (G-SCS), respectively. Nucleotide specificity studies demonstrated that A-SCS could not utilize guanine nucleotides and that G-SCS could not use adenine nucleotides. Enzymatic assays of tissue extracts detected both isoforms in kidney, heart, and brain, while only A-SCS was in breast muscle, and G-SCS in liver. Highly purified A-SCS and G-SCS each possessed the α and β subunits that are common to all previously purified SCSs. Characterization studies of the two isoforms by …

Cytotoxin Targeting Of Oxytocin (Ot) Receptive Cells: Ot Receptors And Salt Appetite., Trini Troy Vargas Jul 1999

Cytotoxin Targeting Of Oxytocin (Ot) Receptive Cells: Ot Receptors And Salt Appetite., Trini Troy Vargas

Theses and Dissertations

The targeting of oxytocin (OT) receptive cells with a novel cytoxin (ricin A-chain oxytocin conjugated to oxytocin; rAOT) has revealed a potential role for OT in the osmolality-related inhibition of salt appetite seen in two model systems. The experiments in this study were designed to test the hypothesis that intraventricular (icv) treatment with rAOT results in the loss of [I 125]-OVTA binding sites in the central amygdala in these two model systems (Experiment 1: Mannitol Challenge; Experiment 2 PEG/Mannitol Challenge). Experiment 1 (Mannitol Challenge; produces hyperosmotic/hyponatremic conditions in the rat) and Experiment 2 (PEG/Mannitol Challenge; produces hypovolemic/hyperosmotic/hyponatremic conditions in the …

Analysis Of The Caloric Expenditure Of Students In Middle School Physical Education Classes, Wendy Granum Frappier

Theses and Dissertations

According to the recent Surgeon General's Report guidelines, all Americans including children need to bum a minimum of 150 calories in daily physical activity or approximately 1,000 calories a week to meet minimum healthy activity standards. The purpose of the study was to assess the caloric expenditure of students in middle school physical education classes to determine if they were expending a sufficient amount of calories in physical education classes to meet the minimum healthy activity recommendations. More specifically, the study determined the differences in caloric expenditure and various physical activities, the relationship between heart rate and caloric expenditure, sex …

Take My Thesis…Please! The Art Of Stand-Up Comedy, Kyle J. Dukart Jul 1999

Take My Thesis…Please! The Art Of Stand-Up Comedy, Kyle J. Dukart

Theses and Dissertations

In my thesis, I explore the artistry of stand-up comedy primarily by concentrating on five aspects of the genre that one generally uses to discuss literature: theme, persona, language, narrative structure, and audience. My purpose is to critically analyze a mode of artistic expression that is rarely given serious academic consideration

To accomplish this purpose I researched various theories of comedy and then proceeded to listen to and read about dozens of stand-up comedians. Using my own and other's knowledge of comedy and literature, I then closely analyze parts of routines from ten of the comedians I studied, including Lenny …

Jewish Exile And Immigration: Re-Imagining Home On The North Dakota Prairie, Jason Zevenbergen Jul 1999

Jewish Exile And Immigration: Re-Imagining Home On The North Dakota Prairie, Jason Zevenbergen

Theses and Dissertations

From the memoirs of several Jewish homesteaders in North Dakota, one observes a series of binaries between Diaspora and homeland and between Jewish Orthodoxy and more liberal forms of Jewishness. The writers of these memoirs generally produce these binaries through two methods. First, the content they introduce in their stories reflects opposing categories of Jewishness, such as Orthodox and Reform Judaism, that significantly frame the nature of their relationships to their families, local community, and country. Second, when the writers transfer stories from their past into the contemporary moment, they juxtapose a previous self with their present self at the …

The Dna Sequence From A Cloned 15 Kilobase Fragment Of The Chlamydomonas Acidophila Mitochondrial Genome And Rna Transcript Production In Response To Cadmium, Scott A. Hoffman May 1999

The Dna Sequence From A Cloned 15 Kilobase Fragment Of The Chlamydomonas Acidophila Mitochondrial Genome And Rna Transcript Production In Response To Cadmium, Scott A. Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

Chlamydomonas acidophila is a unicellular green alga of the order Chlamydomonadales. Our research efforts were allied along two lines: (1) Characterization of the C. acidophila mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and (2) Elucidation of any molecular events responsible for C. acidophila's heavy metal tolerance. The mitochondrial genomes of the protists have been underrepresented in the sequence databases. Among the protists, the alga genera Chlamydomonas shows a reduced mtDNA content with a highly rearranged gene structure. It was decided to sequence C. acidophila's mtDNA to further elucidate the evolutionary paths among the Chlamydomonads and add to the protist sequence database. A 15 kb …

"Billy Yank" On The Northern Plains: The Lives Of Union Soldiers On The Minnesota-Dakota Frontier From The Great Sioux Uprising To 1866, Darrin F. Boehm

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will tell the generally forgotten story of the Civil War era soldiers on the Minnesota-Dakota frontier who fought in the Great Sioux Uprising from 1862 to 1865. It will also compare the frontier soldiers’ campaign experience with the experiences of Bell Irvin Wiley’s Civil War ‘'Billy Yanks.”

This thesis covers enlistment procedures, food, clothing, shelter, discipline, disease, boredom, combat, the “galvanized” Yankees, the Dakota landscape, and the role of the cavalry. This story of the frontier soldiers’ expeditions against the Sioux on the northern plains is told using direct quotations from frontier soldiers’ diaries and manuscripts, along with …
