The Effects Of Thought Suppression On Later Recall Of Valenced, Self-Referenced Adjectives, Danial S. Sturgill
The Effects Of Thought Suppression On Later Recall Of Valenced, Self-Referenced Adjectives, Danial S. Sturgill
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of thought suppression on later recall of valenced material. According to Wegner's (1994) theory of ironic mental processes, effortful attempts at thought suppression result in an increased accessibility of the to-be-suppressed thought under conditions of high cognitive load. Participants (N = 180) received an induced-sadness manipulation before being asked to concentrate on associations between visual images (either a white bear or an brown rabbit) and 28 adjectives (14 positively-valenced, 14 negatively-valenced). After a five minute period of suppressing thoughts of one of the visual images, participants were asked to remember as many of the 28 …

Temporally Regulated Gene Expression In The Embryonic Rat Thoracic Spinal Cord., Wendy Chrystine Perryman
Temporally Regulated Gene Expression In The Embryonic Rat Thoracic Spinal Cord., Wendy Chrystine Perryman
Theses and Dissertations
Recent experimental approaches to the study of gene expression in the developing spinal cord have demonstrated the presence of neurotransmitters, growth factors and guidance cues that appear either at discrete times early in development or for extended periods of time throughout prenatal development and even into the postnatal period. Based on morphologic observations we have made previously in the developing rat thoracic spinal cord, the present study is designed to identify genes in the embryonic spinal cord that are expressed at very discrete developmental time points late in embryonic development. Our hypothesis is that previously unknown genes expressed at discrete …
Metastatic Potential And Resistance To Oxidative Stress In Nb2 Lymphoma Cell., Hanqian Liang
Metastatic Potential And Resistance To Oxidative Stress In Nb2 Lymphoma Cell., Hanqian Liang
Theses and Dissertations
Malignant cancers typically become more aggressive with time. This process, termed tumor or malignant progression, is associated with phenotypic changes within the tumor, such as loss of dependence upon growth factors or hormones, development of drug resistance, tissue invasiveness and metastatic ability. The observation of differences in levels of glutathione (GSH) and related enzymes, resistance to activation of apoptosis, and induction of transcription factors suggest that (1) oncogenic progression from growth factor dependency to autonomy in the Nb2 lymphoma cell model is associated with adaptive changes in the redox state of the cell and that these changes potentiate or facilitate …

Cultural Influences On Body Image Perception Of Native American Women., Melody Lafriniere
Cultural Influences On Body Image Perception Of Native American Women., Melody Lafriniere
Theses and Dissertations
Although cultural influences are gaining increased recognition in research in many areas, few studies have considered cultural influences on body image perception. Similarly, literature addressing the issues of American Indian women is lacking. Very little research considers the cultural influence on body image perception of American Indian women. This project considers the influences of culture as it relates to an American Indian woman's perception of her body image. Eighty-four American Indian women, enrolled as students at a small Midwestern university participated in this study to determine their body image perception according to Cash's Multidimensional Body-Self Questionnaire, and the influences of their …

Questions And Inversion In Ocotepec Mixtec, Roy Eberhardt
Questions And Inversion In Ocotepec Mixtec, Roy Eberhardt
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Yes/No questions, Wh-questions, and embedded questions in Ocotepec Mixtec are described and analyzed within the Government and Binding framework. Questions involving prepositional phrases are unique in that the whole prepositional phrase must be fronted and then the question word is subsequently fronted again. Similar inversion occurs when a possessive phrase is questioned. Smith Stark (1988) documents this phenomenon as occurring across language families throughout Meso-America. Aissen (1996) analyzes it for Tzotzil, a VOS language, as secondary movement to the specifier of PP or DP. This analysis is not possible for Mixtec, a VSO language, so I posit adjunction to the …

A Comparison Of The Maximal Torque Production Of The Quadriceps Muscle During Morning And Afternoon Strength Assessment, Michael Rexin
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
The purpose of this study is to compare maximal quadriceps peak torque production in isokinetic strength assessment in the morning and the afternoon. Thn1y male subjects between the ages of21 and 43 volunteered for this study. The subjects were randomly assigned to either an early morning group (7:30 AM to 9 AM) or an afternoon group (2:30 PM to 5 PM). Each subject performed six maximal concentric isokinetic contractions with the quadriceps muscles after a warm up and an initial familiarization session. Data analysis was done using a t-test for paired samples and Pearson's correlation The results showed a .90 …

A Comparison Of The Maximal Torque Production Of The Quadriceps Muscle During Morning And Afternoon Strength Assessment, Shawn Mccoul
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
The purpose of this study was to compare maximal quadriceps torque production in early morning hours to afternoon hours. Thirty male subjects volunteered to participate in this study and were randomly assigned to an AM or PM testing session. At least one week after the first test, the subjects completed a similar test in the opposite time slot. Each subject was positioned on the Kin-Com (Chattecx Corp., Chattanooga, 'IN) dynamometer and performed six maximal concentric isokinetic repetitions of knee extension at 600/s between the ROM of 10° and 80° of knee flexion. The AM/PM ratios indicated no significant difference between …
Diet And Exercise-Induced Menstrual Dysfunction In The Female Athlete, Roberta Welp
Diet And Exercise-Induced Menstrual Dysfunction In The Female Athlete, Roberta Welp
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
In recent years there has been an overwhelming increase in the number of females participating in athletic activities. As members of the sports medicine team, physical therapists must be able to recognize afflictions unique to the female athlete. A cluster of increasingly common disorders has been titled the "female athlete triad." By definition, it is the inter-relatedness of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Clinically, it may include other factors such as excessive exercise, various degrees and forms of menstrual dysfunction, and additional issues such as fractures, scoliosis, and general musculoskeletal injury.
The purpose of this study is to provide information …

Psychosocial Risk Factors In Cardiac Disease, Brenda Jill Rooney
Psychosocial Risk Factors In Cardiac Disease, Brenda Jill Rooney
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Acute myocardial infarction is responsible for an extraordinary number of deaths per year in the adult population. Both traditional risk factors (ex., smoking) and non-traditional risk factors (ex., hostility) have been studied for many years in regard to cardiac disease prognosis and progression. Based on past studies, the area of potential psychological cardiac risk factors includes a broad range of characteristics. Difficulties in interpreting and comparing results include a lack of consistent and objective grading criteria and standardized measurements. The problems in this area of study are confounded by difficulties in identifying the definite biological mechanisms through which psychosocial factors …
