Theses and Dissertations

Black teachers’ unique historical experiences are often completely overlooked or amalgamated with those of White teachers in states such as North Dakota, where the population is predominantly White and the study of African Americans is particularly sparse. This study examines the life experiences of Thelma Bertha Daggs (now deceased), an African American teacher at the Fort Totten Indian Boarding School, Devils Lake, North Dakota from 1949 - 1967. Emphasis was placed on describing and understanding past events and the particular life experiences of Thelma Daggs through collection, evaluation, analysis and interpretation of data, including a range of historical sources from …

Speech/Language And Social Behavior Performance As Predictors Of Literacy Acquisition In Children With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects, Kristen Ann Runge Aug 2004

Speech/Language And Social Behavior Performance As Predictors Of Literacy Acquisition In Children With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects, Kristen Ann Runge

Theses and Dissertations

This study was a review of existing case files and focused on the struggles of one particular segment of the special needs student population and the challenges that educators face as they attempt to engage them in meaningful learning experiences. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAS/FAE) are completely preventable; yet, their presence in classrooms remains high and bears profound implications for educators. This study examined the specific relationships between FAS/FAE and literacy acquisition in children. Specific variables of children with FAS/FAE were considered. They included IQ, speech/language development, and social behavior performance.

Hypotheses guiding this study were the following:

  1. Evidence …

Constructions Of Female Identities In Mary Gordon's The Other Side And Maureen Howard's Before My Time, Neli Gogovska Aug 2004

Constructions Of Female Identities In Mary Gordon's The Other Side And Maureen Howard's Before My Time, Neli Gogovska

Theses and Dissertations

In Women's Time Kristeva designates three broad currents of feminist struggle: first, the suffragist movement declaring a universalist view of women's experience regardless of class, age, and cultures; second, the phase of difference, that she regards as "returning to an archaic (mythic) memory as well as cyclical or monumental temporality of marginal movements" (355); and third, a trend that she wholeheartedly supports for their concept that "the dichotomy of man and woman as an opposition of two rival entities is a problem of metaphysics" (366).

This thesis discusses Howard and Gordon as proponents of the second phase because they write …

Love, Laughter, And Lessons: What A Canine Brought To A Classroom For Students With Severe Emotional Disorders, Katherine L. Anderson Aug 2004

Love, Laughter, And Lessons: What A Canine Brought To A Classroom For Students With Severe Emotional Disorders, Katherine L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether having a dog as a member of a self-contained classroom for students diagnosed with severe emotional disorders held benefits for these students. This study provided an opportunity to explain or predict the effects that a dog had on students’ emotional well-being and learning in the school setting.

The methods and procedures for this study were qualitatively collected and analyzed. This study was considered a case study, because it explored a bounded system over time through detailed, in-depth data collection, which involved observations, student interviews, and parent interviews. The broad research question …

Population Ecology And Expansion Dynamics Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Western North Dakota, Sara Ann Milne May 2004

Population Ecology And Expansion Dynamics Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Western North Dakota, Sara Ann Milne

Theses and Dissertations

Black-tailed prairie dog* (Cynomyt ludlvicianus) are a keystone species that were once widespread throughout the Great Plains. Beginning in the 1900* however, black- tailed prairie dogs experienced serious reductions in range an numbers such that recent estimates suggest they inhabit only 2% of their historic range. As a result of the decline in numbers and range, black-tailed prairie dogs arc currently a candidate species for protection under the endangered species act. Because of the species’ status as a candidate species and their importance as a keystone species, conservation biologists and resource managers are interested in developing effective management approaches directed …

Effects Of Time Of Day On Executive Function In Native American Children And Non-Native American Children, Jennifer Garaas Scott May 2004

Effects Of Time Of Day On Executive Function In Native American Children And Non-Native American Children, Jennifer Garaas Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has examined the performance of Native American children on cognitive tasks. The results from these studies indicated that Native American children performed poorer on these tests than Caucasian children, especially on the Verbal IQ scale. Research on cognitive tasks have found that time of day affects performance. One area of cognitive function, not yet examined for susceptibility to circadian influence, is that of executive functioning. The present study examined the effects of time of day on executive functioning in Native American children and Non-Native American children. The study sample consisted of thirty Native American children and fifty-four Caucasian …

The Emotional Intelligence Of Award-Winning Fitness Industry Professionals, Terry Eckmann

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate if award-winning fitness professionals with careers as fitness instructors, personal trainers, and program directors demonstrate higher emotional intelligence than non-award winning fitness professionals as measured by the Emotional Competency Inventory (ECI). Thirty award winners (23 women and 7 men) and 77 non-award winners (60 women and 17 men) participated in this study. The sample ranged from 23 to 70 years of age. MANOVA was used to analyze the data and …

Genetic Population Structure Of The Plains Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus (Spea) Bombifrons) On The Northern Plains, Todd Becker May 2004

Genetic Population Structure Of The Plains Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus (Spea) Bombifrons) On The Northern Plains, Todd Becker

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examined genetic population structure in spadefoot toads (Scaphiopus bombifrons) living in western North Dakota. Spadefoct toads have a very unique life history among amphibians. They are generally limited to being active only during nocturnal wet periods. Because of this, and other factors such as philopatry, it is expected that migration and dispersal rates should be relatively low. I hypothesize that this low rate of movement, along with fairly short dispersal distances when individuals do move, should lead to the structuring of genetic variation at relatively fine scales.

Five microsatellite loci were used to examine population structure …
