Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is influenced by dietary consumption of fat while much of the population consumes a diet deficient of the trace mineral copper. Obesity and copper deficiency can alter cardiovascular function; including cardiac hypertrophy, increased myocyte lipid droplet volume, and cardiac contractile depression. Interestingly, lipotoxic dysfunction is characterized by many of the same mechanistic alterations that are observed in obesity and copper deficiency. Additionally, the sphingolipid ceramide is elevated in lipotoxic dysfunction. However, functional leptin:leptin receptor signaling prevents lipotoxic dysfunction. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine the role of a high fat and marginal copper deficient diet on cardiac …

Portrait Of An Angler, Zak Haselmo Jan 2004

Portrait Of An Angler, Zak Haselmo

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis consists of a series of sketches. Each is on fishing. Emphasis is placed primarily on style, in which I experiment with language through imagery, through modulation of rhythm and shifting scale of perspective. Given these three elements, the substance of the sketches lies heavily on each one's philosophical as well as moral import (as demonstrated by the actions and thoughts of the characters themselves) along with the execution of stylistic devices relevant to each sketch. Finally, the sketches are written in reference to other nature writers, from Walton to Hemingway (along with Turgenev, Thoreau and McGuane), in which …

Aquifer Denitrification : Correlation Of ¹⁵N Isotopic Enrichment And First-Order Rate Constants, Ryan Klapperich

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Denitrification is the process by which potentially dangerous nitrate is biogeochemically reduced into harmless nitrogen gas. This process is mediated by bacteria in the presence of suitable electron donors, such as organic carbon, sulfide, and ferrous iron. Due to its potential utility in the remediation of contaminated environments, the process of denitrification has received considerable attention. However, a relationship between the rate constant of the reaction and isotopic enrichment of 15N, which occurs as a direct result of the chemical reaction, has received little consideration. A strong correlation between these two factors could lead to a technique to estimate denitrification …
