Age -Related Behavioral Change In Ames Dwarf Mice, David P. Austin Jul 2009

Age -Related Behavioral Change In Ames Dwarf Mice, David P. Austin

Theses and Dissertations

The discovery of the Ames dwarf mouse in the early 1960s has given researchers an exciting opportunity to study the hormonal effects of aging. The Ames dwarf mice have a recessive mutation of the PROP-1 gene that causes hereditary dwarfism. The abnormality produced an anterior pituitary deficiency which resulted in the lack of growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and prolactin. Researchers noticed that these mice were smaller than their normal siblings but lived approximately twice as long. The purpose of the present research was to determine if the reduced hormones in the Ames dwarf mouse delay the loss of memory and …

Needs Assessment For The Greenway Grand Forks -East Grand Forks Development And Public Education, Laura Munski Jul 2009

Needs Assessment For The Greenway Grand Forks -East Grand Forks Development And Public Education, Laura Munski

Theses and Dissertations

Following the flood of 1997, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers included the Greenway Grand Forks—East Grand Forks (the Greenway) as a flood control measure for Grand Forks, North Dakota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota. It extends along both the Red River of the North and the Red Lake River, encompassing 2200 acres of land. The cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks hired consultants to assist with the postflood planning process. The planning process culminated with the Red River of the North Greenway Final Report (Flink, 1998). The purpose of this study was to determine if the development …

Preeclampsia And Future Cardiovascular Risk, Christine Lauzon May 2009

Preeclampsia And Future Cardiovascular Risk, Christine Lauzon

Theses and Dissertations

Several recent studies have shown that women with a history of preeclampsia or gestational hypertension are at increased risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease later in life. It is unclear whether this increased risk is due to underlying conditions in the women that predispose them to preeclampsia, or to the long-term sequelae of the preeclampsia syndrome. It is clear though that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women. There is a lack of anticipatory guidance for women regarding their future risk of cardiovascular disease following pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia. Therefore, the purpose of this project was …

Alterations Of High-Energy Brain Metabolites Across Multiple Neurodegenerative Disorders, Jeremy W. Gawryluk May 2009

Alterations Of High-Energy Brain Metabolites Across Multiple Neurodegenerative Disorders, Jeremy W. Gawryluk

Theses and Dissertations

Brain energy metabolism is vital for many cellular processes including homeostasis and thus disturbances to metabolism can be the cause or consequence of neurodegeneration. Metabolic discrepancies have been hypothesized to be involved but less frequently demonstrated to be manipulated by acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, and epilepsy. I hypothesized that cerebral energy levels are decreased in my model systems for Alzheimer's disease, Autism, Down syndrome, and HIV-1 dementia and that dietary treatments could enhance energy reserves and protect against neurodegenerative disease. For rodent studies, I utlilized a high-energy head focused microwave irradiation system to …

Integrating Lethal And Nonlethal Approaches For Management Of Suburban Deer, Jason R. Boulanger, Paul D. Curtis, Michael Ashdown Apr 2009

Integrating Lethal And Nonlethal Approaches For Management Of Suburban Deer, Jason R. Boulanger, Paul D. Curtis, Michael Ashdown

Biology Faculty Publications

Evaluations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population management in suburban landscapes has included debate over lethal control (e.g., sharp-shooting and hunting). These management techniques are often stymied by political impediments, safety concerns, and public attitudes. We are implementing the novel use of surgical sterilization in combination with hunting to mitigate deer-related impacts on Cornell University lands near Ithaca, New York. The project lands are composed of 2 zones: a suburban core campus area (446 ha) and adjacent outlying areas that contain agricultural fields and natural areas where deer hunting is permitted (582 ha). Surgical sterilization will be the …

Neurotensin Regulates Gabaergic Activity In The Ca1 Region Of Rat Hippocampus, Shanshan Li Mar 2009

Neurotensin Regulates Gabaergic Activity In The Ca1 Region Of Rat Hippocampus, Shanshan Li

Theses and Dissertations

Neurotensin (NT) is a tridecapeptide that interacts with three NT receptors, NTS1, NTS2 and NTS3. NT has been reported to modulate GABA release in various brain regions under both physiological and pathological conditions. A beneficial role for NT in correcting GABA dysfunction/deficiency has been implied. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying NT-induced increases in GABAergic function remain ill-defined. Here, we first examined the effects of NT on GABAergic transmission and the underlying cellular and signaling mechanisms in the hippocampus of juvenile rats. We found that NT dose-dependently increased sIPSC frequency in CA1 pyramidal neurons without affecting the amplitude of …

The Role Of Src Suppressed C-Kinase Substrate In Primary Sensory Neurons, Christopher P. Irmen Mar 2009

The Role Of Src Suppressed C-Kinase Substrate In Primary Sensory Neurons, Christopher P. Irmen

Theses and Dissertations

SSeCKS (src suppressed C kinase substrate) is an A kinase anchoring protein that has been localized in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Previous studies have suggested that SSeCKS is restricted to a population of small-diameter neurons in the dorsal root ganglia whose central axons terminate in superficial laminae of the spinal cord dorsal horn. This SSeCKS containing population displayed labeling characteristics consistent with non-peptidergic C-fibers and occasionally contained nerve growth factor receptors. The present study investigated the hypothesis that SSeCKS is found in a subgroup of primary sensory neurons that are involved in transmission of nociceptive stimuli. This was …

Issues In Sign Language Translation, With Special Reference To Bible Translation, Mark Penner Jan 2009

Issues In Sign Language Translation, With Special Reference To Bible Translation, Mark Penner

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Sign Language (SL) translation is a field of growing interest to major groups involved in translation, but many SL translation projects are encountering difficulties. In examining these, I argue that the Deaf community occupies a unique sociolinguistic context as it relates to translation, and that this makes Deaf ownership of translation projects and training of Deaf people a high priority. I then look at three other salient issues in SL translation: personnel, exegesis, and the question of signing style, offering tentative solutions. In addition, I suggest that projects might benefit from: 1) engaging in discourse studies early in the SL …

Estimating Deer Abundance In Suburban Areas With Infrared-Triggered Cameras, Paul D. Curtis, Bazartseren Boldgiv, Peter M. Mattison, Jason R. Boulanger

Biology Faculty Publications

Interactions between humans and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have become common, often resulting in management actions to mitigate negative impacts. Changes in population size are generally used to judge management actions. We examined deer population estimation techniques during 2 mark-resighting experiments in a woodland-grassland habitat in central New York State and in a suburban area. We compared program NOREMARK, Lincoln-Peterson estimates, and Jacobson’s (1997) buck:doe ratios (BDR) for estimating deer abundance. In the first field trial, we sought to validate the camera survey methods and computer applications. We used infrared-triggered cameras (IRCs) to survey a white-tailed deer population …

Custom-Made Helmet Fabrication For Occupational Therapists Treating Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury, Megan Schill, Michael Shae

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Soldiers within the Veteran's Administration who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) were the focus of this project. Reports showed a growing number of soldiers have returned from Iraq with head injuries, including cranial and brain defects (Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, 2007). Symptoms individuals with TBI commonly exhibit include dizziness, balance problems, sleep problems, excessive fatigue, headaches, and difficulties with cognitive processes. Other symptoms associated with a TBI are blurred vision, ringing in the ears, and bad tastes in the mouth (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2007). The purpose of this project was to develop …

An Occupational Therapist's Manual For Animal Assisted Therapy With Emotionally Distrubed Adolescents, Ann Marie. Bilek, Hannah Osborne Jan 2009

An Occupational Therapist's Manual For Animal Assisted Therapy With Emotionally Distrubed Adolescents, Ann Marie. Bilek, Hannah Osborne

Occupational Therapy Capstones

According to the comprehensive literature review, animals are currently being used as an effective tool during therapy and have been reported to promote improvement with communication, behaviors, quality of life, and self esteem of different treatment populations. Since emotionally disturbed adolescents often lack appropriate skills in the areas of communication, social interactions, self-esteem, independence, and boundaries, it can be challenging for occupational therapists to provide opportunities for development of these skills. Animal assisted therapy may be a tool that can assist in bridging the gap between the adult therapist and emotionally disturbed adolescents and provide a medium to promote skill …
