An Occupational Therapists' Guide To Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Kelsey Hewitt, Stephanie White Jan 2009

An Occupational Therapists' Guide To Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Kelsey Hewitt, Stephanie White

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare polyneuropathy that affects 2,720 people per year in the United States (NIH, The National Women’s Health Centre, 2004). Guillain-Barre syndrome has a rapid onset that causes the patient to lose sensation and muscle strength within 48-72 hours. This project provides a resource for occupational therapists treating Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) to access information regarding the etiology, incidence/prognosis, assessments, and course of medical treatment. The Occupational Adaptation model serves as a foundation for treatment of the product-a guide for occupational therapy intervention. Interventions are organized to be compatible with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (American Occupational …

A Reference Tool For Occupational Therapists To Utilize When Planning Occupation-Based Interventions Using Animal-Assisted Therapy, Jennifer L. Hamre, Kathryn E. Nagorka

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a reference tool for occupational therapists to implement an animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program utilizing small animals in preparatory, purposeful, and occupation-based interventions. A thorough literature review was completed using PubMed, CINAHL, EBSCO, and OT Search to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current uses for small animals in a variety of settings. Cumulative resources included books, journal articles, editorials, magazines, and electronic organizational resources. Upon completion of a review of literature, we determined animals may be a beneficial modality and serve as an alternative mode of treatment to utilize with other …

A Guide To Integrating Cots Games Into Your Classroom, Richard Van Eck Jan 2009

A Guide To Integrating Cots Games Into Your Classroom, Richard Van Eck

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

Many of the educational outcomes we seek to promote in public education, such as problem solving and critical thinking, are difficult to achieve given the constraints of the real-world classroom. Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) games make excellent tools for addressing both content-based and higher-order learning outcomes, and many educators are exploring their use in the classroom. But making effective use of commercial games in the classroom requires that we understand how games function in relation to the typical instructional strategies and practices of the classroom. The first part of this chapter will examine the theories that underlie the successful integration of …

Effects Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Iudovicianus) On Soil Erosion, Tim Jahraus Jan 2009

Effects Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Iudovicianus) On Soil Erosion, Tim Jahraus

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The rates of natural erosion are poorly understood, especially with respect to influences by fauna. Soil traps were implemented in a prairie dog town 14 miles NW of Killdeer, ND to measure and compare erosion rates within the prairie dog town to those of a control site comprised of natural prairie grasses and void of prairie dogs. Results from 81 days (May 31st-September 20th) include a total of 27,492.6 grams collected among three boxes dispersed throughout one alluvial plume downhill of an active prairie dog hole and 49 grams collected among two boxes placed outside the prairie dog town in …

Hydrologic Design Of A Wetland Impoundment: Kingsbury County, Sd., Seth W. Trobec Jan 2009

Hydrologic Design Of A Wetland Impoundment: Kingsbury County, Sd., Seth W. Trobec

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

An embankment is proposed to create a wetland, as classified by the Army Corps of Engineers (1987), in southeastern South Dakota as part of a geological engineering senior design project. The wetland will lie within the Prairie Pothole Region of the Upper Midwest. It is within this region that the presence of wetlands has been declining over recent decades. The wetland will provide habitat supportive of waterfowl which make bi-annual flights over the area during migration. The embankment will incorporate a sharp-crested weir capable of passing a 25-yr, 24-hr rainfall event. Stop logs will be incorporated into the weir to …
