Deception Analysis In Interpersonal Communication, Loren E. Schwarzwalter Dec 2009

Deception Analysis In Interpersonal Communication, Loren E. Schwarzwalter

Theses and Dissertations

The art of magic reigns as the premiere form of entertainment made possible through the strategic means of deception. An untrained individual (civilian) who desires personal gain at the expense of others, however, may use the same strategic gimmicks and manipulations that magicians employ. This study considered the theatrical elements used by magicians during the performance of magic but in an interpersonal civilian context. In order to examine civilian use of the premeditated theatrical elements, and to determine their presence in deceptive interpersonal communication, this study examined low versus high self-monitors and male versus female genders.

An experiment was conducted …

Combined Spinal-Epidural Versus Traditional Epidural In Labor Analgesia, Kimberly M. Wade Aug 2009

Combined Spinal-Epidural Versus Traditional Epidural In Labor Analgesia, Kimberly M. Wade

Theses and Dissertations

Epidural anesthesia is a popular choice among women for pain control during labor. There are several techniques that can be utilized by anesthesia providers to deliver this type of regional anesthesia. Traditional epidurals have been in use the longest and may be associated with prolonged labor, the need to augment with oxytocin, and an increase in the rate of incremental delivery (Anim-Somuab, Smjth, & Howell, 2005). The combined spinal-epidural technique was introduced to offer more flexibility and to decrease the incidence of adverse effects seen with traditional epidural anesthesia. This evidence-based review of literature will focus on studies that compare …

Developing A Labor Epidural Information Course For First Time Mothers, Philip Roylance Aug 2009

Developing A Labor Epidural Information Course For First Time Mothers, Philip Roylance

Theses and Dissertations

In the field of anesthesia, an epidural is the most common fonn of analgesia for laboring mothers. Legally, in order for an anesthesia provider to place an epidural, the parturient must be educated regarding this form of analgesia. Most anesthesia providers do educate their patients regarding epidurals. However, several problems arise with current procedures including a majority of the education taking place while the mother is in labor and being provided by someone other than anesthesia personnel. These problems pose questions such as: (A) ls this the most efficacious time to educate expecting mothers, (B) Does the parturient truly understanding …

Palembangese In Print: An Nls Look At Literacies, Linguacies, Communicacies, And Culturacies In South Sumatra, Jacob M. Hall

Theses and Dissertations

People have been interacting with print in the South Sumatran city of Palembang for well over a millennium. Most of this literate activity has been carried out in languages other than the vernacular. Even now, the vast majority of print in the public realm in Palembang is in Indonesian, English, Arabic, and Chinese. And yet there are examples of the local language, Baso Pelembang, in print. This thesis looks for reasons behind these variations from the norm.

After exploring the perspective offered by the New Literacy Studies (NLS), this paper builds upon the foundation provided by these works. Through …

(5) Do these stories connect to traditional American Indian customs and beliefs?
