Predicting Functional Protein Complexes In The Glycolytic Pathway: Computer Simulations Of Compartmentation And Channeling In Glycolysis, Neville Y. Forlemu Apr 2010

Predicting Functional Protein Complexes In The Glycolytic Pathway: Computer Simulations Of Compartmentation And Channeling In Glycolysis, Neville Y. Forlemu

Theses and Dissertations

Functional protein-protein interactions are essential for many physiological processes. For example, the association of glycolytic enzymes to F-actin is proposed to be one mechanism through which glycolytic enzymes are compartmentalized, and as a result, plays essential roles such as regulation of the glycolytic pathway, substrate channeling and increasing glycolytic flux. An accurate molecular picture describing such interaction, however, is not yet generalized. Similarly, questions about the specificity and extensive nature of such functional complexes in a variety of cells, tissues, or organisms, still remain ambiguous. Examination of these interactions in various animal species tests this hypothesis by observing whether binding …

Basal And Metal-Induced Expression Of Metallothionein And Zinc Transporters In The Rwpe-1 Human Prostate Epithelial Cell Line, Amy L. Albrecht Apr 2010

Basal And Metal-Induced Expression Of Metallothionein And Zinc Transporters In The Rwpe-1 Human Prostate Epithelial Cell Line, Amy L. Albrecht

Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of death among men world wide; while prostate cancer has many factors leading to its development; one such factor is cadmium exposure. Cadmium is a known human carcinogen and is an environmental factor that has been linked with prostate cancer progression. Metallothionein (MT) is a cadmium binding protein that is expressed within human tissues that may play a role in prostate carcinogenesis. Zinc is an important metal within the body and the prostate contains high levels of this metal within the cytosol of the cells, whereas the prostate cancer cells do not retain this …

Adrenergic Receptor Modulation Of Hippocampal Ca3 Network Activity, Christopher W. D. Jurgens Apr 2010

Adrenergic Receptor Modulation Of Hippocampal Ca3 Network Activity, Christopher W. D. Jurgens

Theses and Dissertations

Norepinephrine (NE) is an endogenous neurotransmitter distributed throughout the mammalian brain. NE has demonstrated proconvulsant and antiepileptic properties. In higher cortical structures such as the hippocampus, a region often involved in temporal lobe epilepsy, NE has been shown to reinforce the cognitive processes of attention and memory. However, the specific mechanism of these actions has not been clearly established. To address this, the effects of NE were studied on hippocampal CA3 network activity. Frequency changes of burst discharges in response to NE were biphasic; low concentrations increased the number of bursts, while higher concentrations suppressed the number of bursts, suggesting …

Even Satan Spoke Hebrew, Gilad Elbom Apr 2010

Even Satan Spoke Hebrew, Gilad Elbom

Theses and Dissertations

A novel preceded by a scholarly introduction, EVEN SATAN SPOKE HEBREW employs a variety of metafictional devices—collage, appropriation, borrowing, minoring, framing, indeterminacy, textual parody, obtrusive narration, structural constraints—in an attempt to propose a deliberate departure from the concepts of mimetic art, verisimilitude, and believability. Set in Jerusalem and Los Angeles, it revolves around an aspiring writer who insists on working in a foreign language, a self-professed exile accused of betraying her homeland, national identity, and mother tongue. When her first novel disappears—somehow she manages to misplace the only copy of her manuscript—she embarks on an intertextual journey in search of …

App Is A Novel Proinflammatory Receptor On Vascular Endothelium That Is Involved In The Vascular Dysfunction Associated With Atherosclerosis And Ad, Susan A. Austin Apr 2010

App Is A Novel Proinflammatory Receptor On Vascular Endothelium That Is Involved In The Vascular Dysfunction Associated With Atherosclerosis And Ad, Susan A. Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a ubiquitously expressed type one integral membrane protein. Due to its ability to bind components of the extracellular matrix and propagate signaling responses via its cytoplasmic phosphotyrosine binding motif it has been suggested to function in cellular adhesion. Here, we utilized brain tissue and aorta from human and apolipoprotein E -/- (apoE-/-) mice to examine vascular inflammation associated changes related to APP. We also examined AD brain tissue for similar changes. Human atherosclerotic aorta, human AD cerebrovasculature and mouse apoE-/- aorta and cerebrovasculature revealed strong endothelial immunoreactivity for APP, APP phosphorylated at tyrosine residue 682 …

Role Of Dendritic Cells In Spontaneous Polychondritis: Pathogenesis And Prevention, Maninder Sidhu Apr 2010

Role Of Dendritic Cells In Spontaneous Polychondritis: Pathogenesis And Prevention, Maninder Sidhu

Theses and Dissertations

Spontaneous polyarthritis (SA) is an autoimmune disease that develops spontaneously at 4 months of age in the HLA-DQ6αβ8αβ double transgenic (tg) mice. The disease is characterized by lymphocyte infiltration in joints leading to chronic polyarthritis in the extremities similar to human rheumatoid arthritis. Immature dendritic cells (iDCs) have a tolerogenic potential due to low expression of important costimulatory cell surface molecules required for antigen presentation and induction of an effective immune response. In this study it has been shown that injection of iDCs pulsed with chick type II collagen (CII) significantly delayed the onset and suppressed the severity of SA …

Isthmus Zapotec Vowel Formants, Julie Martin Jan 2010

Isthmus Zapotec Vowel Formants, Julie Martin

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This paper addresses several questions regarding the acoustic properties of Isthmus Zapotec vowels. Based on earlier recordings of a female, mother-tongue speaker of the language, average formant frequencies for each of the five phonemic vowels are determined for this speaker. I then look at differences in formant frequencies between stressed and unstressed modal vowels. Finally, I compare modal, laryngealized and checked productions of the vowels, to see if there are systematic differences between these three phonation types.

John F. Kennedy History, Memory, Legacy: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry, John Delane Williams, Robert G. Waite, Gregory S. Gordon

Open Educational Resources

On September 25, 1963, President John F. Kennedy traveled to Grand Forks, North Dakota, greeted its citizens while touring the city, and delivered a speech at the University of North Dakota Field House, which addressed important issues still vital today: environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, economic development, the struggle between democracy and totalitarianism, and the importance of education and public service. The University conferred on the President an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Over 20,000 people assembled on campus that day to see JFK -- the largest campus gathering in UND history. Tragically, less than two months later, the …

The Promotion Of Pediatric Sensory Integration Using Small Animals In A Clinical Or Classroom Environment: A Resource For Occupational Therapists, Nina Perez Jackson Jan 2010

The Promotion Of Pediatric Sensory Integration Using Small Animals In A Clinical Or Classroom Environment: A Resource For Occupational Therapists, Nina Perez Jackson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The purpose of this scholarly project was to create and provide a program to assist occupational therapists in setting up, managing, and providing animal assisted activities and therapies (AAA/T) as a useful conjunction with sensory integration therapy.

A review of the literature revealed a lack of information for occupational therapists to provide AAA/T with children. The research revealed that the use of sensory integration therapy as a pre-established framework to implement AAA/T would provide a research based platform to present a program incorporating animals into therapy.

Based on the literature findings, a product was developed to guide occupational therapists in …

A Cultural Competence Guide For Occupational Therapists: Addressing Major Health Issues Of The Eastern Shoshone & Northern Arapaho Tribes, Crystal Nelson, Ashton Wilcox-Brown Jan 2010

A Cultural Competence Guide For Occupational Therapists: Addressing Major Health Issues Of The Eastern Shoshone & Northern Arapaho Tribes, Crystal Nelson, Ashton Wilcox-Brown

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The authors have created a cultural competency guide on the history, culture, and beliefs of the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes as well as an overview of current health concerns and resulting health disparities. The creation of the guide is necessary in order to provide information about these cultures to occupational therapists (OT) working with them. However, there is considerable lack of resources for discussing cultural competency regarding these tribes in relation to occupational therapy.

In preparing to create the guide, an extensive literature review was conducted to determine cultural issues and health disparities of the two tribes. Secondary …
