MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs
Today’s rapid advances in algorithmic processes are creating and generating predictions through common applications, including speech recognition, natural language (text) generation, search engine prediction, social media personalization, and product recommendations. These algorithmic processes rapidly sort through streams of computational calculations and personal digital footprints to predict, make decisions, translate, and attempt to mimic human cognitive function as closely as possible. This is known as machine learning.
The project Recipe for Disaster was developed by exploring automation in technology, specifically through the use of machine learning and recurrent neural networks. These algorithmic models feed on large amounts of data as a …

The blog post reviews are very recent Ninth Circuit case, Thuraissigiam, which holds that “asylum seekers facing deportation have the right to challenge the summary denial of their asylum claims in federal court". The ruling in Thuraissigiam applies to individuals who have failed to establish a “credible fear of persecution” in expedited removal proceedings conducted at the border.

Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina
Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Anemia adversely impacts the health of more than a billion people worldwide. A strong association between anemia and arsenic exposure has been reported in epidemiological studies from multiple countries. However, the mechanistic bases for the association between arsenic exposure and anemia is not fully understood. In this study, we found an inverse association between drinking water arsenic exposures and clinical indicators of anemia (i.e., red blood cell counts and hematocrit/packet cell volumes) in a cohort of men from rural Bangladesh enrolled in the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study.
Follow-up studies in mice, revealed that 60-day exposure to trivalent inorganic …

The very first amendment to the United States Constitution protects the freedom of speech. While the Supreme Court held in 1969 that students “do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate,” since then the Court has limited students' freedom of speech, stopping short of considering the boundaries of off-campus, online speech. Lower court holdings vary, meaning that a student engaging in certain online speech may not be punished at all in one state but would face harsh criminal punishments in another. The lack of a uniform standard leads to dangerously inconsistent punishments and poses the ultimate threat to …
Informativeness Of Dental Morphology In Ancestry Estimation In African Americans, Jessica M. Gross, Heather J H Edgar
Informativeness Of Dental Morphology In Ancestry Estimation In African Americans, Jessica M. Gross, Heather J H Edgar
Pathology Research and Scholarship
OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to assess the informativeness of dental morphology in estimating biogeographic ancestry in African Americans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data are 62 dental morphological traits scored as nondichotomized and dichotomized in 797 individuals, 992,601 SNPs from 271 individuals, and 645 STRs from 177 individuals. Each dataset consists of Africans, Europeans, and African Americans. For each dataset, we summed Fisher Information (FI), then used STRUCTURE to estimate ancestry.
RESULTS: Total FI was highest for SNPs, followed by STRs, nondichotomized dental traits, and dichotomized dental traits. For both genetic datasets, Africans and Europeans fell into two distinctive clusters with …

Abstract Background Paramedics report unique challenges when delivering EOLC, including accessing education and having low confidence. Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) covers a large geographical area and education is typically centralised. Project ECHO uses a tele-mentoring network to share best practice, enable case-based learning to manage complexity, develop communities of practice and build capacity in logistically and geographically challenged services. Prior implementations demonstrated improved knowledge, confidence and self-efficacy in participants. We piloted the ECHO model to develop EOLC amongst YAS clinicians. Method This project began in October 2018 and is planned to run until March 2019; it recruited to capacity (30 …

The Standard Model of particle physics has accomplished a great deal including the discovery of Higgs boson in 2012. However, since the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model has not been successful so far, some physicists are asking what alternative deeper theory could be beyond the Standard Model? This article discusses the relationship between mathematics and physical reality and explores the ways to go from Big Science to “Deep Science”.

The aim of this paper is to make a proposal for an easy–to–use approach to the evaluation of customer satisfaction in restaurants. In order to provide a reliable way to collect respondents’ real attitudes, an approach based on the use of smaller number of evaluation criteria and interactive questionnaire created in a spreadsheet file is proposed in this paper, whereby an easy-to-understand and simple-touse procedure is proposed for determining weights of criteria. In addition to the said, the proposed approach applies the simplified SERVQUAL-based approach, for which reason a simplified version of the Weighted Sum Method based on the decision …

Low-Cost Instructional Apparatus To Improve Training For Cervical Cancer Screening And Prevention, Sonia Parra, Maria Oden, Kathleen Schmeler, Rebecca Richards-Kortum
Project ECHO Bibliography
BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer for women in medically underserved areas. This is in part due to a lack of trained clinicians to provide the necessary diagnosis and treatment of precancerous lesions to prevent cervical cancer. Increasing medical provider knowledge and skills is important for the early detection and prevention of cervical precancer and cancer in medically underserved areas of the United States and globally.
METHOD: LUCIA is a low-cost, universal cervical cancer instructional apparatus that can be used to teach and practice a variety of essential skills for cervical cancer screening, diagnosis, and …

Across the United States, families are getting ready to start their day. The kids are waking up and brushing their teeth, the toast is being buttered, and the newspaper is being retrieved from the curb. However, in some communities this scene is playing out against the backdrop of a toxic legacy dating back to the American industrial revolution. In the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, families are waking up to the smell of gasoline and the sound of idling trains. Around the harbor in New Bedford, Massachusetts, families are unable to sit down to a locally sourced seafood dinner. …
The Bureaucratic Takeover Of Criminal Sentencing, Maimon Schwarzschild
The Bureaucratic Takeover Of Criminal Sentencing, Maimon Schwarzschild
New Mexico Law Review
A tendency towards more bureaucracy is notable in various public and private American institutions in recent times. The courts have not been immune to this trend. Perhaps the most interesting and almost certainly the most consequential rise of bureaucracy over the courts in the past quarter century has been the transfer of power and discretion over criminal sentencing from federal judges to a bureaucratic sentencing commission. If only as a dramatic instance of growing regulatory power at the expense of the judiciary, it is worth considering how this happened, why it happened, what the legal consequences for the criminal justice …

Contracts Of The Dead: When Should They Haunt The Living?, William A. Drennan
New Mexico Law Review
Contracting parties can negotiate death and expressly deal with it in their written contracts. They seldom do, perhaps because of social taboos about discussing death. When the agreement fails to directly say whether the contract lives or dies upon an obligor’s death, two bedrock principles of contract law conflict. On the one hand, serious agreements should be enforced; on the other hand, you should not be forced into a contract with a stranger. An English court in the days of Shakespeare established rules, and many courts still use those rules and require a decedent’s children or other successors to fulfill …
Contrastive Analysis And Contrastive Rhetoric In The Legal Writing Classroom, Diane B. Kraft
Contrastive Analysis And Contrastive Rhetoric In The Legal Writing Classroom, Diane B. Kraft
New Mexico Law Review
In the past several decades, the number of English-as-a-second-language (ESL) speakers attending law schools as part of J.D. and LL.M. programs has increased dramatically. While some of these students are fluent in English, many are not yet able to read, write, and speak English, or understand spoken English, at the advanced level required for successful graduate work in law. The language problems are sometimes grammatical, sometimes cultural, and often both. For those students who are required to complete a writing course as part of their graduate program, deficiencies in writing ability can be a difficult obstacle to overcome. For the …
