What Can We Learn From Adult Esl Students’ Responses To Children’S Literature?, Monique C. Stone
What Can We Learn From Adult Esl Students’ Responses To Children’S Literature?, Monique C. Stone
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Some teachers face frequently changing populations of students, making it difficult to gain cultural knowledge that is important to support student learning. The aim of this study was to explore how adult language-learner students in intensive English programs (IEPs) respond to children’s picture books portraying their home countries or cultures. Reader response theory (Rosenblatt, 1995) and cultural scaffolding (Gay, 2002; i.e., the use of student culture to support student learning) are the initial frameworks upon which the study was developed. The study was qualitative in nature and driven by a desire for the researcher to gain more cultural knowledge about …

Tlatoani Cuauhtemoczin, El Barrio De Analco, Y La Mexicanidad La Conformidad De Danza Azteca-Chichimeca De Conquista, Jorge A. Garcia
Research and Development Supported by El Centro
In 1521 the Mexica-Tenochca people from Mexico-Tenochtitlan took their last stand against the invasion of the Spanish army and their native allies. The story tells us that during this confrontation the Tlatoani Cuauhtemoczin addressed the people and gave them their last command. He told them that “our sun has concealed itself. Our sun has hidden itself and has left us in darkness. However, we know that it will return. It will come forth again and once again give us light. But while it remains in the house of resting and transformation, we should unite, concealing deep within our hearts all …
Planning For Protest: The Spatial Dimensions Of Civil Resistance Movements In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Nora Lamm
Planning For Protest: The Spatial Dimensions Of Civil Resistance Movements In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Nora Lamm
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This research project seeks to better understand how protests of varying sizes take place in public spaces, focusing on the city of Rio de Janeiro. The relationship between cities and protests has increasingly gained importance as urban areas throughout the world become epicenters for demanding greater political rights and expanded notions of citizenship (Harvey, 2003) (Vicino, 2017). Understanding the dynamics of protest in Rio de Janeiro is particularly important as the city struggles to overcome a financial crisis following nearly a decade of hosting international mega-events including the 2016 Olympics. Unstable funding has led to a public security crisis as …
Investigation Of The Coupled Nuclear, Thermal-Hydraulic, And Thermomechanical Response Of A Natural Circulation Research Reactor Under Severe Reactivity-Initiated Accident Transients, Darren G. Talley
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Research reactors play an important role in higher education, scientific research, and medical radioisotope production around the world. It is thus important to ensure the safety of facility workers and the public. This work presents a new reactor transient analysis code, referred to as Razorback, which computes the coupled reactor kinetics, fuel element heat transfer, fuel element thermal expansion and thermal stress, and thermal-hydraulic response of a natural circulation research reactor. The code was developed for the evaluation of large rapid reactivity addition in research reactors, with an initial focus on the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR) at Sandia National …
Compact Optical Frequency Standards For Future Applications Beyond The Laboratory, Kyle Martin
Compact Optical Frequency Standards For Future Applications Beyond The Laboratory, Kyle Martin
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Atomic clocks provide one of the fundamental building blocks upon which modern telecommunications systems are constructed. Since the invention of the frequency comb in the early 2000s, laboratory frequency standards have quickly outpaced their compact counterparts. Compact clocks, however, have continued to leverage microwave transitions not yet exploring the advantages of an optical atomic clock. With the recent development of robust frequency combs compact optical clocks can now be realized. In this dissertation two atomic species are investigated for a compact atomic frequency standards. Both of these clocks are in different development stages but offer unique advantages. The optical rubidium …
The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez
The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Nanoscale transport using the kinesin-microtubule (MT) biomolecular system has been successfully used in a wide range of nanotechnological applications including self-assembly, nanofluidic transport, and biosensing. Most of these applications use the ‘gliding motility geometry’, in which surface-adhered kinesin motors attach and propel MT filaments across the surface, a process driven by ATP hydrolysis. It has been demonstrated that active assembly facilitated by these biomolecular motors results in complex, non-equilibrium nanostructures currently unattainable through conventional self-assembly methods. In particular, MTs functionalized with biotin assemble into rings and spools upon introduction of streptavidin and/or streptavidin-coated nanoparticles. Upon closer examination of these structures …

A Functional Perspective On Everyday Sadism, Marley Russell
A Functional Perspective On Everyday Sadism, Marley Russell
Psychology ETDs
Everyday sadism is thus far a poorly operationalized personality trait. In its current conceptualization it offers predictive value for aggressive behavior over and above the effects of other antisocial personality traits. To improve the utility of this potentially critical predictor of socially undesirable behavior I conducted an exploratory study that more precisely examines its psychometric structure and informs its evolutionary significance. Due to the scarcity of research on everyday sadism (which is additionally limited by the trait’s poor operationalization) I suggest a functional hypothesis for its evolution based largely on theoretical reasoning. I propose this hypothesis for everyday sadism with …

Genomics Based Approaches To Fungal Evolution, Aaron J. Robinson, Donald O. Natvig
Genomics Based Approaches To Fungal Evolution, Aaron J. Robinson, Donald O. Natvig
Biology ETDs
Advances in DNA sequencing and data analysis make it possible to address questions in population genetics and evolution at the genomic level. Fungi are excellent subjects for such studies, because they are found in diverse environments, have short generation times, can be maintained in culture and have relatively small genomes. My research employed genetic approaches using a variety of sequencing technologies and methods of analysis to explore questions in fungal evolution.
In one study, I explored the genetics behind differences in thermotolerance between isolates of Neurospora discreta from Alaska and New Mexico. Isolates from the two states exhibited differences in …

Developing A Simulation Tool For Evaluating In-Motion Detector Systems (La-Ur-18-29139), Brian Jennings
Developing A Simulation Tool For Evaluating In-Motion Detector Systems (La-Ur-18-29139), Brian Jennings
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Available simulation software lacks the ability to produce in-motion detector responses for detector systems that may be used to detect the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials. In this thesis, a simulation tool is developed that uses static measured data as a basis set for producing in-motion detector responses with the ability to vary many parameters in each simulated trial. Once the basis set is measured and loaded into the simulation tool, the user interface allows the user to enter variations to speed, source height, source-to-detector distance, background exposure rate, which source(s) are present, their relative strength and shielding configuration, and …
