Association Between Self-Reported Dyspnea And Depressive Symptoms In New Mexico Uranium Workers, Shiva Sharma
Association Between Self-Reported Dyspnea And Depressive Symptoms In New Mexico Uranium Workers, Shiva Sharma
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
BACKGROUND: Uranium workers risk experiencing dyspnea, a lung disease symptom. Previous studies found associations between dyspnea and depressive symptoms in lung disease, but this requires further study in occupational cohorts.
METHODS: This study evaluated the association between dyspnea and depressive symptoms in former uranium workers screened by New Mexico Radiation Exposure Screening & Education Program. Dyspnea and depressive symptoms were evaluated through questionnaires, Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale and a modified Patient Health Questionnaire-2, respectively. Logistic regression models were applied to cross-sectional analyses. Generalized linear models were applied to longitudinal analyses.
RESULTS: Cross-sectional analyses demonstrated higher dyspnea scores were …

Maize is a cultigen of global economic importance, but when it first became a staple grain in the Americas, was unknown and contested. Here, we report direct isotopic dietary evidence from 52 radiocarbon-dated human skeletons from two remarkably well-preserved rock-shelter contexts in the Maya Mountains of Belize spanning the past 10,000 years. Individuals dating before ~4700 calendar years before present (cal B.P.) show no clear evidence for the consumption of maize. Evidence for substantial maize consumption (~30% of total diet) appears in some individuals between 4700 and 4000 cal B.P. Isotopic evidence after 4000 cal B.P. indicates that maize became …

Innovative Virtual Mentoring Using The Extension For Community Healthcare Outcomes Model For Primary Care Providers For The Management Of Alcohol Use Disorders., Jayant Mahadevan, Lekhansh Shukla, Prabhat Kumar Chand, Miriam Komaromy, Pratima Murthy, Sanjeev Arora
Project ECHO Bibliography
The number of experts available for the management of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in rural and underserved areas in India is limited. In this study, a blended training programme was conducted for 26 primary care providers (PCPs) from nine districts of Bihar, in best practices for the management of AUDs. A two weeks on-site training was followed by fortnightly online tele-Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) clinics for six months using the 'Hub and Spokes' ECHO model, accessible through internet-enabled smartphones. A questionnaire administered at baseline and after six months assessed changes in the PCPs compliance with principles of AUD …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Understanding processes that support the well-being of the unprecedented numbers of forcibly displaced people throughout the world is essential. Growing evidence documents post-migration stressors related to marginalization as key social determinants of refugee mental health. The goal of this RCT was to rigorously test a social justice approach to reducing high rates of distress among refugees in the United States. The 6-month multilevel, strengths-based Refugee Well-being Project (RWP) intervention brought together university students enrolled in a 2-semester course and recently resettled refugees to engage in mutual learning and collaborative efforts to mobilize community resources and improve community and systems responsiveness …

A high-speed fluorescence microscope operating at a 490 Hz frame rate was used to image two different membrane proteins- the high-affinity IgE receptor FcɛRI, a transmembrane protein, and an outer-leaflet GPI-anchored protein. The IgE receptor was imaged via IgE labeled with Janelia Fluor 646 and the GPI-anchored protein was imaged using a GPI-GFP fusion protein and an ATTO 647 N labeled anti-GFP nanobody. Data was collected for both proteins in untreated cells and cells that had actin stabilized by phalloidin. This dataset can be used for development and testing of single-particle tracking methods on experimental data and to explore the …

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that manifests with variable severity. 1 A subset of symptomatic individuals develop proinflammatory or prothrombotic profiles requiring additional testing and interventions. 2-5 It is unclear which COVID-19 patients will ultimately develop severe disease that would have benefitted from early and aggressive interventions.

Pathology Research and Scholarship
D-dimer assays have been Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved or cleared for results below a manufacturer-defined cutoff in conjunction with low or intermediate pretest clinical probability to rule out venous thromboembolism.1 Given apparent overall increase of D-dimer level with age, clinical guidelines have recommended application of an age-adjusted D-dimer–level cutoff to exclude suspected pulmonary embolus specifically in patients with low or intermediate pretest clinical probability.2,3 Despite additional studies and literature availble, these guidelines themselves rest solely on the Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoff Levels to Rule Out Pulmonary Embolism: The ADJUST-PE Study,4 applying an age-adjusted D-dimer–level …

BACKGROUND: Increases in plasma von Willebrand Factor (VWF) levels, accompanied by decreases in the metalloprotease ADAMTS13, have been demonstrated soon after traumatic injury while downstream effects remain unclear.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A cohort of 37 injured trauma patients from a randomized control trial investigating the use of prehospital plasma transfusion were analyzed for activity and antigen levels of ADAMTS13 and VWF at 0 and 24 hours after admission. Relevant clinical data were abstracted from the medical records. Trauma patient plasma was analyzed via agarose gel electrophoresis to evaluate the effects of injury on VWF multimer composition compared to healthy …

CONTEXT.—: Lower Anogenital Squamous Terminology (LAST) standardization recommended p16
OBJECTIVE.—: To describe the relationships of p16 IHC and other biomarkers associated with cervical cancer risk with biopsy diagnoses.
DESIGN.—: A statewide, stratified sample of cervical biopsies diagnosed by community pathologists (CPs), including 1512 CIN2, underwent a consensus, expert pathologist panel (EP) review (without p16 IHC results), p16 IHC interpretation by a third pathology group, and human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping, results of which were grouped hierarchically according to cancer risk. Antecedent cytologic interpretations were also available.
RESULTS.—: Biopsies were more likely to test p16 IHC positive with increasing severity of CP …
