Quantifying Coverage Of A Distal Radius Volar Plate Using A Novel Pronator Quadratus Rotational Muscle Flap Technique, Christina Salas, Leslie Neher, Joshua Romero, Camille Aubin-Lemay
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Flexor tenosynovitis and tendon rupture are rare, yet serious complications after treatment of a fractured distal radius with a volar plate. The highest incidents of rupture are associated with the plate on or distal to the watershed line of the radius. While studies have shown that reattachment of the pronator quadratus (PQ) following plating does not lead to improved measures in grip strength or range of motion, it may reduce the incidence of these complications. Reattachment of the PQ after a standard approach does not often capture the distal edge of the plate. We report results of a new …

Background: There are very few reports in the literature that directly address nonunion in children. The current study aimed to present a series of long bones nonunion in children following fractures and corrective osteotomies. Methods: This was a retrospective study that included pediatric patients diagnosed with nonunion following long bone fractures or corrective osteotomies. Patients with nonunion following femoral neck or lateral humeral condyle fractures were excluded. The clinical and radiological records were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Eight patients developed nonunion after fractures, while four patients had nonunion after corrective osteotomies. The mean age at the time of surgical procedure for …

The Versatility Of Taylor Spatial Frame In Treating Comple Posttraumatic Deformities Of The Lower Extremity, Rami Khalifa, Amr Abdelgawad, Ahmed M. Thabet
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: The Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) is a multiplanar external fixator with a computerized web-based program to provide accurate fractures reduction and deformity correction. This study aimed to evaluate our results after the treatment of complex lower extremity injuries with the external fixators including TSF. Methods: This retrospective case series included eight patients with complex lower extremity injuries treated with TSF. The medical records and radiographs were reviewed. The ASAMI score was used as an outcome measure. Statistical analysis used Microsoft Excel descriptive statistics. No inferential statistical tests were done owing to the small sample size. Results: The mean age …

In the first week of this month, the nation was surprised to learn that retired general officers (generals and admirals) including James Mattis, Colin Powell, Michael Glenn Mullen, and William McRaven (to name a few) spoke out against President Donald Trump’s response to demonstrations across the United States. President Trump threatened to unilaterally invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act and federalize the National Guard as well as use the active duty Armed Forces of the United States as a “super police force.”
The conduct of the retired generals is not without detractors. The Constitution was constructed with the idea that a …

Nuclear Morphology And The Biology Of Cancer Cells, Edgar G. Fischer
Nuclear Morphology And The Biology Of Cancer Cells, Edgar G. Fischer
Pathology Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: For more than a century, diagnostic pathologists have used morphologic abnormalities of the nucleus as essential diagnostic features to distinguish benign from malignant cells. These features include nuclear enlargement and increased nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, nuclear membrane irregularities, hyperchromasia, and abnormal chromatin distribution. As our knowledge about the genetic and epigenetic abnormalities of cancer cells has increased in recent decades, the pathophysiologic mechanisms that underlie these morphologic abnormalities remain incompletely understood.
SUMMARY: This review attempts to summarize biologic abnormalities in malignant cells related to these morphologic changes. The molecular anatomy of the nuclear envelope in normal and malignant cells is discussed …

Albuquerque Journal Interviews Maryam Ahranjani, Many Want Police Out Of Schools Across Nm, Maryam Ahranjani, Shelby Perea
Faculty Scholarship
In Albuquerque, University of New Mexico School of Law associate professor Maryam Ahranjani and Hope Pendleton, a board member of the Black Law Student Association at UNM, are saying now is the time to remove officers from schools.
“There’s a lot of unfortunate downstream negative repercussions for children from having police officers in schools,” Ahranjani said.
Pendleton and Ahranjani helped write a letter to APS Superintendent Raquel Reedy and her leadership team that says funds earmarked for the APS Police Department would be better spent addressing this counselor-to-student ratio and investing in other personnel.
“Reallocating funds away from law enforcement …

Learning From The Past: A Brief Historical Background, Steve Carr
Black History at UNM
As UNM’s Communications and Marketing Department (UCAM) undertakes an effort to help educate the campus community involving the current Black Lives Matter movement through an extensive series covering an array of related subjects and areas that need work, it is important to note several historical moments in our nation’s history that have led us to this precipice we currently face as a nation. The first story in the series provides a brief historical background that takes us back to the 15th Century up to the Reconstruction Amendments (1865-70) that will help set the framework for the remaining stories in the …

Molecular Interplay Between Dormant Bone Marrow-Resident Cells (Bmrcs) And Ctcs In Breast Cancer., Debasish Boral, S Ray Kenney, Dario Marchetti, Haowen N. Liu
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Despite widespread knowledge that bone marrow-resident breast cancer cells (BMRCs) affect tumor progression, signaling mechanisms of BMRCs implicated in maintaining long-term dormancy have not been characterized. To overcome these hurdles, we developed a new experimental model of clinical dormancy employing patient-isolated Circulating Tumor Cells (de novo CTCs) and their injection in xenografts with subsequent tumor monitoring and CTC characterization (ex vivo CTCs). We hypothesized that significant distinctions exist between signaling pathways of bone marrow-homing vs metastasis-competent CTCs upon transplantation in xenografts. Comparative transcriptomic analyses of ex vivo vs de novo CTCs identified increased mTOR signaling-a critical pathway frequently dysregulated in …
(SīˈTĭng) Detroit: Vision And Dispossession In A Midwest Bordertown, Matthew J. Irwin
(SīˈTĭng) Detroit: Vision And Dispossession In A Midwest Bordertown, Matthew J. Irwin
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation examines the relationality of dispossession, racialization, and migration in Detroit, connecting the neoliberal rationality of (re)development to its foundations in Indigenous dispossession and racialized labor. “(Sīˈtĭng) Detroit” understands Detroit as a bordertown, where “the border” is the organizing structure and condition for the operation of settler colonialism in Detroit. From the international boundary to the county line, the border is the on-the-ground, everyday method for controlling space, disciplining populations, and limiting mobility for racialized subjects. To examine possession and belonging in a Black city on an international border, this dissertation introduces a “(sīˈtĭng)” — a methodology for locating …

In the wake of the pandemic, Andrew Yang’s response to anti-Asian American violence was criticized for placing responsibility on Asian Americans rather than those perpetrating the hate crimes. This article explores how "warring ideals for people of color can cause a lot of internal dissonance about what to say and how to act in certain situations.
