The objective of this study was to assess the utilization of nutrition services and registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) at substance use disorder (SUD) treatment centers in New Mexico. This cross-sectional descriptive study used an online survey to gather information from SUD treatment centers offering inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, and/or intensive outpatient treatment across New Mexico. To locate facilities in New Mexico, where the primary focus of care was substance abuse, a search was conducted using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) database of treatment facilities and programs. Out of the 80 facilities initially identified, individuals from 19 …

The U.S. Constitution's Emoluments Clauses: Protecting National Security?, Ric Rockett Nov 2021

The U.S. Constitution's Emoluments Clauses: Protecting National Security?, Ric Rockett

Shared Knowledge Conference

Though important to defending the young nation's security, the brevity of the Emoluments Clauses belies the inability to enforce their intent and protect national security from extra-governmental influence. Until Donald J. Trump's candidacy for the Office of the President, little attention had been paid to these elements of national security, leaving an exploitable hole in the expectations of public office behavior. To overcome these shortcomings, action is necessary to strengthen their protections and enforceability, averting future crisis in the security and integrity of the nation. As important as these clauses are in protecting the security and integrity of the nation, …

Comparison Of Bulk And Surface Dopants For Stabilizing Ceria Surface Area, Ryan Alcala Nov 2021

Comparison Of Bulk And Surface Dopants For Stabilizing Ceria Surface Area, Ryan Alcala

Shared Knowledge Conference

Ceria is known to be a great heterogenous catalyst and catalyst support for both oxygen and hydrogen transfer catalysis. Many of these reactions take place at high temperature where ceria is known to sinter, lose surface area, and become less catalytically active as a result. Ceria, having the ability to bind strongly to many transition metals, can form stable surface and bulk complexes that remain stable even at temperatures up to 800 degrees C. These dopants form stable complexes in atomically dispersed form decorating only the surface or as substitutional or interstitial to the ceria host lattice. The presence of …

Horrible Networks - When Media Kill Ethics, Sudhiti Naskar

Shared Knowledge Conference

Networks are organizations of people and their interests. Without networks, societies would collapse. However, in recent times, several societies in various nations have observed that networks can breed hatred, lies, increased discrimination, and racism, thereby crippling democracies and eroding their ethical fabrics. In an increasingly digital and technology-empowered world that's mutually networked, the functions and objectives of networks need special attention, mainly because there is scarce understanding about their compositions, organizations, and operations. In Communication, one of the ways networks are understood is through the concepts of first-order networks that include infrastructural units like TV stations, towers, switches, devices, and …

Tracing Transmission Of Sin Nombre Virus And Discovery Of Infection In Multiple Rodent Species, Samuel Goodfellow Nov 2021

Tracing Transmission Of Sin Nombre Virus And Discovery Of Infection In Multiple Rodent Species, Samuel Goodfellow

Shared Knowledge Conference

Orthohantaviruses are a family of negative-sense, single-stranded segmented RNA viruses that can cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) throughout North, Central and South America. Transmission of these viruses is primarily through exposure to droppings from infected rodents. Sin Nombre virus (SNV), found in North America, is primarily carried, and transmitted, by deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and has a ~36% case fatality rate in humans. New Mexico has the highest number of human SNV cases in the United States making it important to understand the distribution and genetics of SNV within this region. In August 2020, amidst the severe acute respiratory syndrome …

Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Laser (Pcsel), Subhashree Seth

Shared Knowledge Conference

Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is investigated as a method of fabrication for photonic crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSELs). The influence of regrowth to photonic crystal morphology is documented. PCSEL devices are demonstrated by optical pumping and electrical injection. PCSELs represent a new class of semiconductor laser that fulfills an industry need for high-power high-quality beams from a monolithic form factor. Traditional semiconductor lasers, edge emitting lasers and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), make compromises between high-power and high-quality emission. For instance, edge emitting lasers are commonly chosen for high power applications, however, their oblong emission surface yields wide divergent …

Ca1 Catecholamine Response To Contextual Novelty Persists After Weeks Of Related Exposure, Tia N. Donaldson Nov 2021

Ca1 Catecholamine Response To Contextual Novelty Persists After Weeks Of Related Exposure, Tia N. Donaldson

Shared Knowledge Conference

Neuromodulatory dynamics play an important role in hippocampal function. Both dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) are required for synaptic plasticity and have been suggested to function as novelty signals within the hippocampus. It was hypothesized these catecholamines would increase when mice were exposed to a novel environment and that responses would decay over time as the context begins to become familiar. Wild type mice were stereotaxically injected into the CA1 of the hippocampus with an adeno-associated virus expressing either DA or NE and then implanted with a single fiber optic cannula. Combined with fluorescent sensors, in vivo fiber photometry was …

Distributional Effect Of Exposure To Cafos: A Case Study Of Large Dairies In New Mexico, Suraj Ghimire

Shared Knowledge Conference

The industrialization of the agricultural sector has turned into a double-edged sword for the future of humanity on this planet. On the one hand, without industrialized agriculture, there would be insufficient food and fiber to feed the growing human population. On the other hand, the rapid expansion of large-scale farms has resulted in an unprecedented amount of negative externalities impacting the environment and human health. While the benefits of abundance have been enjoyed evenly across the board, the negative impacts are borne mainly by and concentrated in the historically underprivileged communities. The goal of this research is to look at …

The Washington Post Interviews Vinay Harpalani: The Courts Have Served As An Anti-Democratic Force For Much Of U.S. History, Vinay Harpalani, David A. Love

Faculty Scholarship

Certainly there are examples in which the high court has upheld the rights of the marginalized and disadvantaged. However, as Vinay Harpalani, associate professor of law at the University of New Mexico, has noted, “even when the U.S. Supreme Court makes rulings that seem to favor people of color, those rulings usually serve the interests of wealthy, elite White Americans.”

Harpalani cited how the Brown decision stemmed in part from Cold War strategy and the need for the United States to appeal to people in African, Asian and Latin American countries. “Racial segregation at home did not bode well …

Investigating Operational Modes In Gallium Nitride Photoconductive Switches, Brad J. Maynard Nov 2021

Investigating Operational Modes In Gallium Nitride Photoconductive Switches, Brad J. Maynard

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

As switching requirements for speed, power, and efficiency become more stringent, advances in wide-bandgap (WBG) materials has enabled their use in high power switching devices. One such device, the photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS), while previously constructed from GaAs, shows promise using WBG Mn-doped GaN. Lateral and vertical geometries of PCSS have been produced and evaluated for operation using sub-mJ/ns regime pulsed laser incidence. At fields below 25 kV/cm, the lateral switch operates in the linear regime where modest photocurrent fitting the laser envelope is observed. Above this threshold, the switches demonstrate circuit-limited persistent conductivity (PC) current, in what is presumed …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Recent manufacturing problems and increased utilization has created a shortage of 3.2% sodium citrate blood collection tubes used for coagulation testing, causing stakeholders such as hospitals, clinics and laboratories, to find suitable alternatives. Considerations for in-house citrate blood collection tube preparations or purchasing commercial products from unknown manufacturing sources is of particular concern to laboratories that perform coagulation testing. It is well recognized that variability exists between citrate blood collection tube manufacturers, thereby making any transition to new blood collection methods more challenging than simply switching to a new source. This document provides provisional guidance for validating alternative sources of …

Conversations About Utopia And Anti-Utopia In Latin America: Co-Authored Writing, Felix Manuel Burgos, Les W. Field, Lara Gunderson

LAII Events

During the markedly strange time for research and writing engendered by the pandemic, I came to realize that for many years I had noticed with alarm that utopian narratives and imaginaries, in written and visual media, had almost completely disappeared, whereas dystopian and anti-utopian imaginaries had everywhere proliferated. I initiated conversations with former and current students to co-theorize this historical moment in the ways alternative futures are conjured and represented. Out of those conversations the two projects presented here developed: on the one hand, a conversation with Lara Gunderson, (PhD in Anthropology 2018) about the utopian imaginary in Nicaragua was …
