Life-Or-Death: An Assessment Of Covid-19 Messaging In New Mexico And Potential Consequences For The Spanish-Speaking Population, Victoria Pena-Parr Nov 2021

Life-Or-Death: An Assessment Of Covid-19 Messaging In New Mexico And Potential Consequences For The Spanish-Speaking Population, Victoria Pena-Parr

Shared Knowledge Conference

A common theme throughout history is that marginalized communities are typically the communities hit the hardest during times of crisis. When the fatal coronavirus put the entire world on lockdown in 2020, there were great concerns that marginalized communities would be the most affected by the disease. This was met directly with promises from government officials ensuring that minority populations would not be left out of COVID-19 relief efforts. These promises included some from New Mexico's own Governor Michelle Luján Grisham. However, our study shows that the state of New Mexico not only neglected but failed to provide equity for …

Voces De Rebeldía Y Resistencia En La Modernidad: El Verdadero Ismael Rivera Y El Nazareno De Daniel Nina., Alejandro Pinto-Hernández

Shared Knowledge Conference

Hispanic Identity & Language Attitudes, Brandon Martínez Nov 2021

Hispanic Identity & Language Attitudes, Brandon Martínez

Shared Knowledge Conference

The conflict between having a traditional Hispanic identity versus a Mexican one is a common theme within the Latino population of New Mexico. It has its roots in the period preceding the invasion of the Southwest by the United States, and was further exacerbated by the struggle for Statehood and through the modern day (Bills & Vigil 2008; Gonzales 2005; Gonzales-Berry & Maciel 2000; Nieto-Phillips 2000; Nostrand 1992). An associated phenomenon is the unprecedented loss of Spanish language skills among the State's Hispanic population in the last 150 years, despite the fact that continued immigration from Mexico and other parts …

Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Protein Expression Of Stress And Immune Factors In The Amygdala Following Early Life Stress., Annette Fernandez Nov 2021

Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Protein Expression Of Stress And Immune Factors In The Amygdala Following Early Life Stress., Annette Fernandez

Shared Knowledge Conference

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the outcome of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) that results in cognitive, mood and neuroimmune disorders. PAE negatively impacts the brain stress-response system by dysregulating the expression of stress neuropeptides such as corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), and neuroimmune factors including interlukin-1beta (IL-1β). Both CRH and IL-1β are suspected to play a role in chronic anxiety and depression. In animal models, studies have characterized the key brain region, the amygdala, in regulating stress and emotion such as anxiety and depression. Prior research demonstrates that stress enhances amygdala activity and alters the expression of neuroimmune factors. However, …

Laser Cooling Silica Glass Fibers To New Record Temperatures, Brian Topper Nov 2021

Laser Cooling Silica Glass Fibers To New Record Temperatures, Brian Topper

Shared Knowledge Conference

Laser cooling of ytterbium doped silica glass fibers by anti-Stokes fluorescence to 18 Kelvin below room temperature has been observed. This milestone achievement breaks the record for cooling a silica fiber by two orders of magnitude. Our new record demonstrates the viability of using silica as a material for radiation-balanced fibers and amplifiers. Numerical simulations using the parameters of the experimentally investigated fiber indicate the potential of self-cooled lasers outputting multiple watts.

Evaluation Of Thermal Infrared Imaging From Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles For Arboreal Wildlife Surveillance, Blair Mirka Nov 2021

Evaluation Of Thermal Infrared Imaging From Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles For Arboreal Wildlife Surveillance, Blair Mirka

Shared Knowledge Conference

An important component of wildlife management and conservation is monitoring the health and population size of wildlife species. Monitoring the population size of an animal group can inform researchers of habitat use, potential changes in habitat and the resulting behavioral adaptation, individual health, and the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Arboreal primates are difficult to monitor as their habitat is often poorly accessible and most primate species have some degree of camouflage, making them hard to observe in and below the tree canopy. Surveys conducted using uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal infrared (TIR) cameras can help overcome these limitations …

Eigenfunction Restriction Estimates On Curves With Nonvanishing Geodesic Curvatures, Chamsol Park Nov 2021

Eigenfunction Restriction Estimates On Curves With Nonvanishing Geodesic Curvatures, Chamsol Park

Shared Knowledge Conference

There have been ways to study the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on compact Riemannian manifolds (without boundary), one of which is to consider the L^p estimates of the eigenfunctions restricted to submanifolds in the given manifolds. Burq, Gérard, and Tzvetkov, and Hu studied many types of these restricted estimates, and one of them was the L^2 restriction estimates on curves with nonvanishing geodesic curvatures. In this talk, we would like to talk about their logarithmic improved analogues, in the presence of nonpositive sectional curvatures in the given compact Riemannian manifolds.

Land, Society, And Justice: Reframing Geoscience Education Through A Storied Anti-Colonial And Environmental Justice Lens, Cameron Reed Nov 2021

Land, Society, And Justice: Reframing Geoscience Education Through A Storied Anti-Colonial And Environmental Justice Lens, Cameron Reed

Shared Knowledge Conference

Geoscience has been paramount to the transformation and advancement of society, fundamentally changing the way we view, interact, and live with the surrounding natural and built environment. It is important to recognize the value and importance of this interdisciplinary scientific field while reconciling its ties to imperial and colonizing extractive systems which have led to harmful and invasive endeavors. To prevent future injustices and resolve inequalities in colonized communities, the future of geosciences must be pushed in a new direction and be framed through a decolonial, and anti-colonial, lens where possible. Additionally, geology and its tangential studies in geosciences must …

Possible Answers To Future Water Scarcity, Catherine Heyne Nov 2021

Possible Answers To Future Water Scarcity, Catherine Heyne

Shared Knowledge Conference

Urban communities around the world are grappling with the challenges associated with population increases, drought, and projected water shortages. With a substantial global shortfall between water supply and demand expected by 2030, water planning strategies must adapt to a new reality characterized by higher temperatures and less precipitation, requiring new ways of thinking about water management, use, and governance. Commonplace strategies such as water conservation and nonpotable water reuse might not be sufficient to adequately stretch water supplies in water-scarce parts of the industrialized world. In the United States, planned potable water reuse (i.e., purification of domestic wastewater for reuse …

Exploring Differences In Research Administrators Perceived Marginality, Isolation, And Mattering In The College Setting: Considerations For University And Personal Job Characteristics, Denis Schulz

Shared Knowledge Conference

Those who are a part of the field of research administration act as liaisons between universities and sponsors. Due to the increased need and expectation for faculty to produce research and secure external funding, research administration plays a critical role in higher education. Despite this, those who serve the university in this capacity are often overlooked and underappreciated in the research sphere. This may lead to research administrators' perception that their work, or even themselves as a person, does not matter to the institutions. This descriptive study investigated research administrator's perceptions of perceived mattering and factors that may influence the …

The Development Of Value For Relatedness Within A Secondary Physical Educator: A Socialization Perspective, Emily Mason Nov 2021

The Development Of Value For Relatedness Within A Secondary Physical Educator: A Socialization Perspective, Emily Mason

Shared Knowledge Conference

A significant body of literature exists around motivation in physical education (PE) and Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE). Self-Determination Theory (SDT) posits that when the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness are fulfilled within students, they are more motivated (Harvey et al., 2017). Much SDT research has focused on the needs of autonomy and competence, but much less attention has been given to the psychological need of relatedness (Van den Berghe et al., 2014). Washburn et al. (2019) offered that socialization experiences influence the way physical educators think and act. Following this, the purpose of this study is …

Optical Responses Of Layered Nanostructures, Dominic Bosomtwi

Shared Knowledge Conference

Fano resonances and Rabi splitting in the spectral response of the scattering parameters are analyzed for a periodic array of binary nanoantennas. It is shown that tuning the refractive index of the dielectric scatterer defines whether identical or mismatched resonances are excited in the array. The studies of nanoelectrode array which can serve as a general guideline in designing plasmonic nanostructures with nanoelectrodes injecting hot electrons into an aqueous environment is presented. The research also involves the investigation of metastructures made up of CMOS-compatible materials and featuring losses comparable to those in metastructures utilizing noble metals.

Integrating Inquiry-Based Learning To Promote Meaning And Relevance Successfully In The Classroom, Gabriella Garcia Nov 2021

Integrating Inquiry-Based Learning To Promote Meaning And Relevance Successfully In The Classroom, Gabriella Garcia

Shared Knowledge Conference

Humans are naturally curious and will take actions to understand the unknown. These actions are a part of a complex system considered to be an inquiry model of the learning process. The inquiry model is something that educators, students, and even all of society use recurrently. Inquiry learning is a form of process-learning where students develop and utilize their critical thinking skills in order to answer important questions. In my research, I discuss how inquiry-based learning improves the overall learning experience for students specifically with incorporating relevance and meaning within the process. The data was collected through literature research, classroom …

The Documentation And Grammatical Description Of Sanapaná (Enlhet-Enenlhet, Paraguay), Jens Van Gysel Nov 2021

The Documentation And Grammatical Description Of Sanapaná (Enlhet-Enenlhet, Paraguay), Jens Van Gysel

Shared Knowledge Conference

The Sanapaná language is spoken by around 1000 people in the Paraguayan Chaco region (Crevels 2012). Only about a third of the members of the ethnic Sanapaná group still speak the language, and in five of the seven Sanapaná communities, children now learn Spanish or Paraguayan Guaraní as their native language. This makes Sanapaná one of the many languages that are in danger of disappearing. Documenting such endangered languages is of vital importance to preserving the world's cultural and intellectual diversity, as well as a representative sample of human linguistic behaviours and their social functions. Language endangerment has also been …

Some Basic Results On Weighted Polynomial Approximation, Galen Novello Nov 2021

Some Basic Results On Weighted Polynomial Approximation, Galen Novello

Shared Knowledge Conference

Chebyshev polynomials play a fundamental role in polynomial approximation. Their study dates back to Chebyshev’s work on rectilinear motion in the 1850’s. Over the years the existence and various characterizations of Chebyshev polynomials have been proven by Chebyshev, Erdos and Kolmogorov among others. In this presentation some of these results are extended to the case of weighted Chebyshev polynomials. In particular, the existence of weighted Chebyshev polynomials is established along with a criteria for uniqueness, an alternation theorem, and a characterization of weighted Chebyshev polynomials using Kolmorogov’s criteria.

Detecting Astrophysical Transients With Cosmic Microwave Background Experiments, Ian Birdwell Nov 2021

Detecting Astrophysical Transients With Cosmic Microwave Background Experiments, Ian Birdwell

Shared Knowledge Conference

Ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments are being developed with more complex designs, capable of producing more sensitive and higher-cadence maps of the CMB. In studying this relic millimeter-wave radiation from the epoch of recombination, it becomes possible to constrain parameters which describe the formation of our Universe. Beyond the initial motivations of making precise CMB maps of intensity and polarization, these experiments are developing methods to observe time-varying astrophysical phenomena, referred to as "transients". In the millimeter regimes observed by CMB experiments, it is possible to observe stellar flares, gamma ray burst afterglows, active galactic nuclei, novae, and gravitational …

"Space, Place And Cultural Visibility: Barrioization And Barriology In Mario Suárez's Short Stories", Jorge Hernández Nov 2021

"Space, Place And Cultural Visibility: Barrioization And Barriology In Mario Suárez's Short Stories", Jorge Hernández

Shared Knowledge Conference

Mario Suárez (1923-1998) a keen observer, short story writer, polemical essayist, aspiring novelist, devoted educator, informed activist, and tenacious editorialist does not stand as a well-known writer. Preferring to be concise and meticulous, a perfectionist, he was more interested in human character than pure craft. Born and raised in the Chicano barrio of Tucson, Arizona and as one of the most important short story writers of Mexican descent from the early mid-twentieth century, Suárez figures as a unique case of an early Mexican American writer to create a distinctively Chicano literary space. Among the many early league activists who carved …

Public Support For Community Microgrids, Jesse Kaczmarski Nov 2021

Public Support For Community Microgrids, Jesse Kaczmarski

Shared Knowledge Conference

Utility-owned community microgrids can provide end-users with decentralized grid access to distributed energy resources and improve reliability and resiliency. However, the feasibility of installing microgrids requires rigorous cost-benefit analysis, which should incorporate social values. Currently, the gap in our understanding of ratepayers' preferences for community microgrid services leaves stakeholders guessing. Using a survey-based contingent valuation method, with a referendum-style elicitation format, this paper provides evidence of public support for community microgrid installations in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah (the Four Corners). The Four Corners region is unique in its potential for renewable electricity capacity as well as heterogeneous state …

Is Thursday The New Friday? The Four-Day School Week And Teen Traffic Safety, Kevin Estes Nov 2021

Is Thursday The New Friday? The Four-Day School Week And Teen Traffic Safety, Kevin Estes

Shared Knowledge Conference

School districts across the United States, particularly in rural areas, have increasingly been switching to a four-day school week the past two decades. To accommodate the lost learning time, students attend school longer each day. While this impacts the daily driving patterns of teens, notably an additional "weekend" night is created for four-day students. Weekend nights are recognized as one of the most dangerous driving times for teens. Using a detailed national dataset of fatal traffic accidents over an eight-year period, I examine how the adoption of a four-day school week affects driving age teen traffic safety in nine U.S. …

Creating A Corpus Of Navajo Historical Narratives - Prospects And Challenges, Lukas Denk Nov 2021

Creating A Corpus Of Navajo Historical Narratives - Prospects And Challenges, Lukas Denk

Shared Knowledge Conference

Linguistic research and language instruction have benefitted from linguistic corpora (digital databases containing numerous texts written in one language). For low-resource languages where written records are scarce, the creation of corpora can be a challenge, but has the benefit of supporting conservation and revitalization. My project consists in the creation of a corpus of Diné Bizaad (Navajo), based on existing publicly available narratives written in the 1950's. I present examples from the corpus as well as mention challenges faced in the annotation of the first 5000 words. One problem that pertains to Native American Languages in general is that only …

Beyond Green Hell And Eldorado: Milton Hatoum's Amazon In "Relato De Um Certo Oriente", Luisa Geisler Nov 2021

Beyond Green Hell And Eldorado: Milton Hatoum's Amazon In "Relato De Um Certo Oriente", Luisa Geisler

Shared Knowledge Conference

Since initial contact with outsiders, the Amazon region has often been described through a colonial lens. These descriptions engage with stereotypes of an impenetrable green hell, as well as its opposite, Eldorado, a land of riches and infinite possibility. Listening and engaging with voices from the region is essential to break the most prevailing stereotype: that of an inscrutable wasteland, impossible to understand. To that end, Relato de Um Certo Oriente is a 1989 novel written by Amazonian author Milton Hatoum, and it is one example of decolonizing narratives. Set in Manaus in the early 20th century, the plot presents …

"We're Such A Small Community": A Qualitative Study Of Covid-19 Pandemic Experiences In Rural New Mexico, Madison Gonya Nov 2021

"We're Such A Small Community": A Qualitative Study Of Covid-19 Pandemic Experiences In Rural New Mexico, Madison Gonya

Shared Knowledge Conference

Rural communities throughout New Mexico faced different sets of challenges in the face of COVID-19 (Ranscome 2020; Mueller et al. 2021; RHI 2021). Such communities were burdened with uncontrolled community spread of COVID-19 that persisted longer than most of the U.S. (RHI 2021). Within this, New Mexican rural communities are more diverse than the average US rural community (RHI 2021). Data from 16 semi-structured interviews illuminate the experiences that rural New Mexicans encountered with physical health and healthcare challenges, mental health challenges, changing behaviors, health literacy, and the politicization of the pandemic. Discussion surrounding Rural New Mexico and the subsequent …

Emerging Cultural Place-Keeping Initiatives In Historic Communities Threatened By Gentrification And Displacement, Maren Neldam Nov 2021

Emerging Cultural Place-Keeping Initiatives In Historic Communities Threatened By Gentrification And Displacement, Maren Neldam

Shared Knowledge Conference

Amid unprecedented economic pressures, the distinct cultural landscape of urban neighborhoods is increasingly threatened. Low income communities of color are feeling the impacts of urban redevelopment, rising rents, and incompatible adjacent uses most acutely. Affordable housing, light manufacturing, bodegas, barbershops, and community organizations are rapidly being replaced with luxury condos, co-work offices, urban spas, art galleries, and high-end restaurants. My research situates decades of these types of neighborhood change dynamics within historical trends of urban planning, calls attention to the expressions of neighborhood cultural identity at risk of erasure, and highlights emerging practices of cultural placekeeping within the community development …

Aridland rivers in the southwestern United States often experience times of intermittent drying where portions of the main river channel are no longer flowing. This is true for the Middle Rio Grande in New Mexico, often through the summer months. This study is centered around the portion of the Middle Rio Grande that flows through Valencia County, New Mexico and the outfalls which flow from the agricultural ditches, that parallel the Rio Grande. Where an outfall is a channel of water that flows from the irrigation ditch, through the bosque, and into the Rio Grande. This research will compare aquatic …

Igniting Artificial Stars With Semiconductor Disk Lasers, Mingyang Zhang Nov 2021

Igniting Artificial Stars With Semiconductor Disk Lasers, Mingyang Zhang

Shared Knowledge Conference

Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) have recently emerged as alternative sources to existing solid-state lasers due to their relatively simple and low-cost architecture, high powers, flexible bandgap engineering, good beam quality, ultrashort pulse operation, and intracavity accessibility. Those unique features make it possible to achieve wavelengths and power levels that can be utilized ranging from spectroscopy and biomedical applications, to creating an artificial star for adaptive optics astronomy. My PhD work at UNM primarily focuses on the latter application. Sodium laser guide stars (LGS) play an essential role for adaptive optics (AO) in ground-based telescopes. A narrow linewidth 589.2 nm laser …

The Development Of Discourse Markers In Narrations Written By Spanish Heritage Language Learners, Mark Cisneros Nov 2021

The Development Of Discourse Markers In Narrations Written By Spanish Heritage Language Learners, Mark Cisneros

Shared Knowledge Conference

Studies in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) indicate that the use of discourse markers (DMs) in the academic writing of second language learners improves the overall quality of these written texts by contributing to their cohesion and comprehensibility (Saif Modhish 2012; Jalilifar 2008; Intaraprawat & Steffensen 1995). The use of DMs not only improves the quality of second language (L2) written texts, but also that of texts produced by speakers in their first language (L1). Learning how to properly use DMs allows L1 writers to become more conscious of how they present the information in their texts (Steffensen & …

Criminal Disenfranchisement: Creating A Caste Of The 'Civil Dead', Ric Rockett Nov 2021

Criminal Disenfranchisement: Creating A Caste Of The 'Civil Dead', Ric Rockett

Shared Knowledge Conference

Events of the last two presidential elections and the ever-present conflict over electoral redistricting planted the seed for this discussion, watered by my personal experience. Many of the democratic republics of the industrialized world cleave to ideals of universal suffrage, some more affirmatively than others. This work examines the nature and differences in how these nations apply this simple principle and answer the question, "Is disenfranchisement of any population a deprivation of fundamental Human Rights and even a revocation of citizenship?" In addressing this question, several historically marginalized groups will be examined, with a particular focus on the disenfranchisement of …
