Social Verbs: A Force-Dynamic Analysis, Pavlina Kalm

Linguistics ETDs

This dissertation provides a semantic analysis of verbs that describe social events, i.e., events in which participants interact with each other on a social level. The following broad semantic categories of verbs are discussed: verbs of communication (e.g., tell, say, advise), transfer of possession verbs (e.g., own, give, buy), social role verbs (e.g., work, hire, imprison), verbs of interpersonal interactions (e.g., fight, meet, bully), and verbs that denote conceptual relations between entities (e.g., differ, symbolize, indicate). Despite their prominent status in the lexicon and frequent use in everyday situations, linguistic accounts of social verbs are …

Distance Estimates To Evolved Stars Using Infrared Emission And Verification And Validation Of The Plasma Code Empire, Brandon M. Medina Aug 2022

Distance Estimates To Evolved Stars Using Infrared Emission And Verification And Validation Of The Plasma Code Empire, Brandon M. Medina

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Gaining insight into the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way is important for understanding the universe on a large scale. Evolved stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch are useful for studying the Milky Way because their emission is peaked in the infrared, where interstellar extinction effects are not as dominant. To further understand the physical properties of these objects like luminosity and investigate the Galaxy's structure, we need distance estimates. Obtaining distance estimates for these evolved stars via trigonometric parallax measurements is time-consuming, so infrared surveys studying Asymptotic Giant Branch stars can benefit from other distance estimate methods. In …

An Application Of Tajfel’S Social Identity Theory To Understand Gamer As A Social Identity Among Saudi College-Level Students, Mohammad M. Assiri Aug 2022

An Application Of Tajfel’S Social Identity Theory To Understand Gamer As A Social Identity Among Saudi College-Level Students, Mohammad M. Assiri

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Understanding the social identity construction of Saudi college-level students who self-identify as gamers in Saudi Arabia is essential when designing a student-centered education. Although support exists within the literature for exploring what it means to be a gamer from the perspective of gamers, a review of the literature revealed a gap in this regard in the context of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this grounded theory study explored self-identification as a gamer in Saudi Arabia using Tajfel's (1981) three tenets of self-identification with a group. A social identity framework was used to understand the characteristics of Saudi gamers, their positive or negative …

Grand Canyon National Park's Water Corridor: Water Supply, Water Quality, And Recharge Along The Bright Angel Fault, Brionna O'Connor Aug 2022

Grand Canyon National Park's Water Corridor: Water Supply, Water Quality, And Recharge Along The Bright Angel Fault, Brionna O'Connor

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Grand Canyon’s ‘water corridor’ includes the Transcanyon Pipeline that conveys water from Roaring Springs near the North Rim to Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim to provide water for the park’s 6.5 million annual visitors. Roaring Springs water has been used at the park and reclaimed at the South Rim Water Reclamation Plant since the 1970s. Our hypothesis is that the pipeline water infiltrates through faults and intermingles with the South Rim groundwater system. We use geochemical tracers to develop mixing models for these waters. Tracers considered are major ions, water isotopologues, radiogenic strontium, and pharmaceuticals. This study has …

Reconciliation Framework: Response To The Report Of The Truth And Reconciliation Commission Taskforce, Jonathan M. Pringle Aug 2022

Reconciliation Framework: Response To The Report Of The Truth And Reconciliation Commission Taskforce, Jonathan M. Pringle

Publications

Released in February 2022, the Reconciliation Framework is designed for non-Indigenous archivists in Canada who manage Indigenous holdings in their repositories, from acquisitions to outreach and all processes in-between. The document positions itself well amongst other related international standards that advocate for a reciprocal, ongoing relationship between archival institutions and the Indigenous communities they purport to represent and serve. The journey to final publication reaches back not only years and decades but also centuries, considering it was borne out of the aftermath of the terrible history of residential schools in North America. Recent formal calls to action demanded redress through …

Adult Prevotella Denticola Digital Abscess With Citrobacter Freundii And Enterococcus Faecalis Superinfection: A Case Report, Austin Fagerberg, Dean W. Smith

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Secondary to penetrating injuries, bacterial infections in the hand are well-reported and most frequently caused by gram-positive organisms. Although Staphylococcus and Streptococcus strains are the most common bacteria to infect the hand after an open injury, the musculoskeletal healthcare provider must be familiar with other potential infecting organisms when determining antibiotic coverage and management for the infected, traumatized hand. Prevotella denticola is a known colonizer of the gingiva and has been previously reported in oral and other systemic infections. Prevotella denticola may also present as a solitary pathogen or a participant in a mixed aerobic and anaerobic polymicrobial abscess. In …

Knee Mechanics In The Golf Swing And The Potential Risk For Injury To The Anterior Cruciate Ligament And Other Structures: A Review, Jessica A. Nelson, Richard M. Wardell, Dustin L. Richter, Robert C. Schenck Aug 2022

Knee Mechanics In The Golf Swing And The Potential Risk For Injury To The Anterior Cruciate Ligament And Other Structures: A Review, Jessica A. Nelson, Richard M. Wardell, Dustin L. Richter, Robert C. Schenck

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

The aim of this study is to review the current literature on knee biomechanics during the golf swing, focusing on angles, forces, and moments seen in both the lead and trail limbs. The golf swing is described in terms of the backswing, downswing, and follow-through. Studies consistently show that the directional torque changes in multiple planes, and that both lead and trail knees face significant forces throughout the swing. The high rotational forces and repetitive loads experienced by golfers’ knees pose a potential risk for injury. Fatigue failure to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has been postulated to occur from …

Trampoline Associated Non-Contact Fractures Of The Proximal Tibial Metaphysis In Children: A Systematic Review, Brad Bergin, Taylor Woolnough, Gwendolyn Lovsted Barch, Devin Peterson

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Background: Pediatric injuries of the proximal tibial metaphysis associated with trampoline use are concerning, as they have been reported to spontaneously progress into valgus deformity. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of outcomes following fractures of the proximal tibial metaphysis that occur as the result of jumping, particularly on trampolines or inflatable structures, and to assess the incidence of progression to valgus deformity of the proximal tibia. It is hypothesized that this specific mechanism of injury does not result in any future deformity of the tibia. Methods: A duplicate, independent, and systematic search of Embase, …

Foundations Of Intramedullary Femoral Shaft Fracture Fixation: Avoidance, Recognition, And Management Of Common Pitfalls, Christopher Kurnik, Jory Wasserburger, William Curtis, Tyler Chavez Aug 2022

Foundations Of Intramedullary Femoral Shaft Fracture Fixation: Avoidance, Recognition, And Management Of Common Pitfalls, Christopher Kurnik, Jory Wasserburger, William Curtis, Tyler Chavez

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Intramedullary nailing is an effective treatment of femoral shaft fractures. However, this procedure has several common complications and technical problems that can interfere with full recovery in some patients. The purpose of this review article is to expand on the literature with the authors’ own experiences to summarize the following common complications of femoral nailing: missed injuries, suboptimal surgical timing, malreduction, reaming errors, implant insertion errors, pain-management problems, and implant removal errors. Strategies are also identified to help avoid and manage these complications.

Reaming Errors In Intramedullary Nailing, Kathryn C. Helmig, Samer Kakish, Thomas A. Decoster Aug 2022

Reaming Errors In Intramedullary Nailing, Kathryn C. Helmig, Samer Kakish, Thomas A. Decoster

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Reaming for intramedullary implants has biomechanical and biologic benefits. However, there are multiple potential pitfalls in the reaming process. Common errors in reaming for intramedullary implants include: over-reaming or under-reaming the intramedullary canal, reamer incarceration, using dull or narrow-fluted reamers, and poor technique. Being aware of these potential problems with reaming helps surgeons avoid intraoperative issues altogether or diagnose their causes as they arise, decrease complications, and improve efficiency in the operating room.
