Ex Vivo Human Chondrocyte Toxicity After Exposure To Tranexamic Acidexposure Acid, Erika Garbrecht, Benjamin Packard, Nafisa Elghazali, Phuong A.H. Nguyen
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) reduces blood loss by inhibiting plasminogen and preventing subsequent fibrinolysis (stabilizing fibrin clots). Topical TXA has been suggested for use in unicompartmental joint arthroplasty and other procedures with residual viable cartilage. However, the effects on human cartilage have not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this study is to determine the viability of human chondrocytes in the setting of various concentrations of topical TXA. Methods: 24 human osteochondral (OC) plugs were harvested from the knee joint of a human decedent within 36 hours of death. OC plugs underwent two rinses with Dulbecco’s Phosphate-Buffered Saline (DPBS) and …

A 76-year-old female previously diagnosed with flexor tenosynovitis, presented to the clinic complaining of right wrist pain and numbness in her fingers. She was seen again after a rheumatologic workup, which was negative. It was noted that there was thenar atrophy when compared to the contralateral side. She was then scheduled for carpal tunnel release surgery. During surgery, a large area of synovitis was encountered. A radical synovectomy was performed and this tissue was sent for culture and pathology. The findings were most consistent with age-related amyloidosis. One week after surgery, the patient was contacted by telephone and reported that …

Emancipatory Nursing Praxis: Applying The Social Justice Theory To Implement Harm Reduction In Prison Substance Use Disorder, Veronica A. Holmes
Emancipatory Nursing Praxis: Applying The Social Justice Theory To Implement Harm Reduction In Prison Substance Use Disorder, Veronica A. Holmes
Theoretical Foundation in Advanced Practice Nursing
The United States has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. Inmates suffer from chronic health conditions and substance use disorder (SUD) at a higher rate than the rest of the population yet, often do not receive sufficient medical care during incarceration. The theory of Emancipatory Nursing Praxis (ENP) calls for the integration of social justice within the profession of nursing. This theory provides a framework in which nurses can awaken and serve as agents of change, working to ameliorate issues of systemic oppression. Harm reduction refers to policies, programs, and strategies aimed at reducing the negative health, economic, …

Nursing Burnout During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Noreen Rizvi
Theoretical Foundation in Advanced Practice Nursing
Nursing burnout continues to rise as the COVID-19 pandemic amplifies environmental stressors in the workplace. This paper explores the application of Callista Roy's adaptation model in preventing nursing burnout during the pandemic using four modes of adaptation: rolefunction, interdependence, physiological/physical, and self-concept or group identity. The presented solution to alleviate nursing burnout examines the implementation of Roy's adaptation model through proposed resiliency initiatives, leadership and management modifications, and state legislature regulation. These interventions aim to reduce anxiety, moral distress, and compassion fatigue, along with increasing support for nurses.

The Body Articulated: Gender Violence And The Performative Turn In Mexico, Kylee Aragon
Museum Studies Theses
The Body Articulated: Gender Violence and the Performative Turn in Mexico explores the role of performance art in raising awareness for gender-based crimes. My thesis investigates the performative response to gender-based violence in contemporary art in Mexico during the 1970’s and then again in the post-NAFTA era, with the aim of examining the use of the artists body, the voices of women as substitution for the body, and the bodies of others as means of creating a greater awareness to the feminicidal epidemic. Artists like Mónica Mayer and Lorena Wolffer use their body and the voices of woman, as opposed …

ABSTRACT
Through the examination of historical place-based, culturally relevant, and responsive Chicana/o pedagogies, as exemplified in the formative 1969 El Plan de Santa Barbara, The Crusade for Justice, and la Academia de la Nueva Raza, the purpose of this project is to create a curricular sketch considering contemporary environmental and economic challenges facing Manita/o/Hispanic/Chicana/o student populations of New Mexico. If its ideals are to be generationally galvanized and sustained, every social movement must establish a semblance of Paideia, a space of grassroots educational initiative, where a marginalized community’s epistemologies are exhumed, reinvigorated, and passed to the next generation. This …

Energy Conservation For Food Growers With Chronic Fatigue, Barrett Harding, Mary Thelander-Hill
OT Research and Scholarship
Food-growers recovering from post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, including chronic fatigue syndrome or post-exertional malaise, can benefit from occupational therapy’s distinct value that allows farmers to overcome barriers and continue in their esteemed profession. It is the primary concern of the occupational therapy practitioner (OTP) to introduce adaptive equipment, compensatory strategies, and energy conservation techniques that minimize the stress and physical exertion required by each farming activity. Emerging research shows that rest may be the more profitable and practical long-term solution when post-exertional malaise is present, and the OTP’s invaluable role provides benefit through maintaining and restoring farming occupations while promoting …
Rock Climbing And Conservation In Land Management: Can They Coexist?, Marissa Heller
Rock Climbing And Conservation In Land Management: Can They Coexist?, Marissa Heller
Geography ETDs
As participation in outdoor recreation is growing in the U.S., a dilemma is presented for conservation planners and land area managers who must manage the increasing demand for recreation while simultaneously working to protect species. Rock climbers and other outdoor recreationalists have asserted that a relationship exists between recreation and the conservation of public lands. However, mounting evidence suggests that rock climbing continues to cause a multitude of negative impacts to ecosystems. Here, I investigate the extent to which land management practices allow for rock climbing and conservation to coexist, and how it is that well developed plans protect ecologically …

This secondary analysis aimed to explore patterns of co-infection and intensive care unit-acquired infections (ICU-AI) and the relationship to use of corticosteroids in a large, international cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients.
Methods: This is a multicenter, international, observational study, including adult patients with PCR-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis admitted to ICUs at the peak of wave one …
Optical And Computational Methods For Detection And Quantification Of Protein-Protein Interactions Using Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, David James Schodt
Optical And Computational Methods For Detection And Quantification Of Protein-Protein Interactions Using Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, David James Schodt
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Interactions between proteins residing on or near the membranes of biological cells trigger many of the signaling cascades that facilitate the transmission of information between the exterior and the interior of the cell. Normal function of these protein-protein interactions (PPIs) is required for the healthy functioning of complex single- and multi-cellular organisms. Abnormalities involving these interactions are implicated in several diseases, such as the progression and treatment resistance of many forms of cancer. Understanding both the normal and abnormal behaviors of these interactions is necessary to improve our understanding of such diseases, which in turn can drive drug development for …

Robust Uncertainty Quantification With Analysis Of Error In Standard And Non-Standard Quantities Of Interest, Zachary Stevens
Robust Uncertainty Quantification With Analysis Of Error In Standard And Non-Standard Quantities Of Interest, Zachary Stevens
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This thesis derives two Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) methods for differential equations that depend on random parameters: (\textbf{i}) error bounds for a computed cumulative distribution function (\textbf{ii}) a multi-level Monte Carlo (MLMC) algorithm with adaptively refined meshes and accurately computed stopping-criteria. Both UQ approaches utilize adjoint-based \textit{a posteriori} error analysis in order to accurately estimate the error in samples of numerically approximated quantities of interest. The adaptive MLMC algorithm developed in this thesis relies on the adjoint-based error analysis to adaptively create meshes and accurately monitor a stopping criteria. This is in contrast to classical MLMC algorithms which employ either a …
Machine Learning Model Comparison And Arma Simulation Of Exhaled Breath Signals Classifying Covid-19 Patients, Aaron Christopher Segura
Machine Learning Model Comparison And Arma Simulation Of Exhaled Breath Signals Classifying Covid-19 Patients, Aaron Christopher Segura
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This study compared the performance of machine learning models in classifying COVID-19 patients using exhaled breath signals and simulated datasets. Ground truth classification was determined by the gold standard Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test results. A residual bootstrapped method generated the simulated datasets by fitting signal data to Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) models. Classification models included neural networks, k-nearest neighbors, naïve Bayes, random forest, and support vector machines. A Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) study was performed to determine if reducing signal features would improve the classification models performance using Gini Importance scoring for the two classes. The top 25% of …

Exploratory Analysis Of Machine Learning For Images: Methods And Applications, Meenu Ajith
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This research focuses on implementing four different applications of machine learning on images. The various categories of digital images considered for these applications are grayscale, RGB, and infra-red images. The first framework uses an unsupervised learning strategy for detecting fire and smoke from an infra-red image dataset. This problem was solved using a classical machine learning algorithm since the dataset was small and unlabeled. Next, a semi-supervised deep learning model was used for facial expression recognition. Here we detect emotions from a moderately large dataset containing labeled and unlabeled grayscale images. The third application focused on single image superresolution, which …

Augmented Reality For Human Control Of Engineering Tasks, Elijah Wyckoff
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
This research is motived by the study of dynamics, especially in experimentation and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods. It is important that inspectors maintain awareness of test structures while observing sensor data and inputting control. Humans receive a large amount of information from vision, and this feedback is crucial to inform decision making. Human-computer interaction (HCI) provides valuable data and information but separates the human from reality as it is necessary to look away from the region of interest to view information on a separate device. Additionally, sensor data does not collect experiment safety, quality, and other contextual information of …
Gp-K: A Probabilistic Method For Hourly Day-Ahead Power Load Forecasting, Miguel A. Hombrados-Herrera
Gp-K: A Probabilistic Method For Hourly Day-Ahead Power Load Forecasting, Miguel A. Hombrados-Herrera
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The elevated costs that incur power grid stakeholders due to forecasting errors in power load demand have created the need for forecasting methods that provide accurate predictions and allow for assessing the reliability of their predictions. This thesis proposes a probabilistic forecasting method for multi-step ahead forecasting.
In particular, it presents a probabilistic method to perform a 24-hours-ahead power load forecasting that arises as the combination of Gaussian Process regressors with NMF (nonnegative matrix factorization) and integrates the advantages of both methods. Instead of training 24 independent processes for each hour of the predicted day, this work proposes to factorize …
"The Ghost Of Freire Is In My Kitchen Now": Dominant Ideology And Critical Possibility In Teachers' Dialogue On Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, Hope A. Kitts
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Critical scholars in sociology, philosophy and cultural studies have long said what is wrong with schools, insofar as they function to perpetuate inequality rather than social uplift, generally. Despite this well-researched state of affairs, schooling—of the State-sponsored, public education kind—remains beholden to the economic interests of the dominant classes. Judging from current retention and attrition rates, proficiency levels, and college entrance numbers, schooling has continued to disproportionately benefit White people, especially in relation to their social class. Moreover teachers continue to be disproportionately White and female when compared with their students. Through a critical analysis of teachers’ discourse on Freire, …

Computational Methods, Investigations, And Codes To Support Corrosion Experiments In Molten Lead And Transfer To Reactor Conditions, Khaled A. Talaat
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Lead cooled fast reactors have many potential economic advantages over other Generation IV reactor designs due to the high boiling point of lead (~1750 °C) at atmospheric pressure and excellent neutronic properties which have made them attractive to the commercial energy sector in the recent years. They, however, remain hampered by challenges in cladding material compatibility with the heavy liquid metal coolant. A forced circulation loop was established at the University of New Mexico (“Lobo Lead Loop”) to prequalify materials for Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) testing and to improve the understanding of flow accelerated corrosion in molten lead environment. Corrosion …

Ultrashort Pulse Laser Filamentation Electrical And Optical Diagnostic Comparison, James E. Wymer
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Results presented here examine the effect of changing gas pressure on the radio frequency (RF) emissions of an ultrashort pulse laser filament plasma and how those emissions vary longitudinally in the laser focal region. We use a WR284 rectangular waveguide with a 1.5 cm hole that allows the beam through. A 3.2 GHz microwave signal is emitted in the waveguide, and signals are received through a waveguide-to-coax antenna connected to an HP8470B Schottky diode. By enabling and disabling the 3.2 GHz signal, we measure both the self-emitted RF from a USPL filament and subsequently the degree of attenuation a filament …
