Understanding The Interconnection Between Public Health And Political Behaviors In A Politically Polarized Context: The Impact Of Race, Political Attitudes, And Policy Factors On The Us Covid-19 Pandemic Response., Florent Nkouaga
Political Science ETDs
This dissertation evaluates the interconnection between health and political behaviors in a polarized context such as the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic unveiled the current political polarization and the structural health disparities among racial communities. Using the system theory delineated by David Easton, this dissertation demonstrates that health attitudes and behaviors in the electorate can influence voting behaviors, as was the case with the 2020 US presidential election. An evaluation of the 2021 African American COVID-19 Vaccine Polls (AACVP), and the 2020 Collaborative Multiracial Postelection Survey (CMPS) demonstrates that factors such as public health compliance, trust in federal health institutions, …

Church, Law, And Literature: The Interconnected Social Structures Of Domestic Violence In The Medieval And Early Modern Periods, Sarah E. Fairbanks-Ukropen
History ETDs
Domestic violence in the medieval and early modern periods can be difficult to examine. The people who lived during these periods did not view familial abuse in the ways that we do today; however, this dissertation seeks to explore the topic of domestic violence by examining the religious, legal and cultural backdrop that enabled, and even encouraged abusive marriages and violence within families. Starting with the Patristic fathers, this dissertation traces the attitudes towards sexuality, violence and the sanctity of marriage in the Church and how it responded to accusations of abuse. Similarly, English law from the pre-Conquest up until …

Determining The Idealizers Of Principal Monomial Ideals Over A Rational Normal Curve, Perla A. Maldonado Cortez
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Given an ideal J generated by an element of the form sm1 tm2 , where
m1 ≥ 2 and m2 ≥ 0, we illustrate how to compute the idealizer I(J) over the ring
of the rational normal curve of degree n and we give a formula for it using the
graded pieces of the sets of differential operators.

How Hearing Parents With Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Children Construct Deafness Through Their Early Intervention Experience, Bettie T. Petersen
How Hearing Parents With Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Children Construct Deafness Through Their Early Intervention Experience, Bettie T. Petersen
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This dissertation explores how hearing parents with deaf/hard of hearing children come to understand deafness. This mixed methods study used an online survey and multiple case studies (volunteers from survey). Participants were asked about early intervention experiences and beliefs about deafness. The survey had 74 respondents and five families participated in the interviews. Survey participants’ beliefs about deafness were primarily medical, focusing on the perceived barriers caused by deafness and the remediation of those barriers through spoken language options. A small number of respondents adopted a cultural perspective of deafness and focused on remediation of barriers through involvement in the …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric infections in the United States, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) conducts active population-based surveillance for laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by Campylobacter, Cyclospora, Listeria, Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Shigella, Vibrio, and Yersinia at 10 U.S. sites. This report summarizes preliminary 2021 data and describes changes in annual incidence compared with the average annual incidence for 2016-2018, the reference period for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Healthy People 2030 goals for some pathogens (1). During 2021, the incidence of infections caused by Salmonella decreased, incidence of infections caused …

Above- And Belowground Responses To Environmental Change In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Renée Françoise Brown
Above- And Belowground Responses To Environmental Change In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Renée Françoise Brown
Biology ETDs
Drylands cover 45% of the terrestrial surface and are expanding rapidly due to anthropogenic drivers. Altered precipitation regimes, atmospheric nitrogen deposition, and wildfire will likely have significant consequences in these regions where ecological processes are limited by water and nitrogen. In this dissertation, I explored temporal dynamics of net primary production (NPP) and related above- and belowground processes under several environmental change drivers in the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, central New Mexico, USA. Located in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, this region experiences strong seasonal precipitation patterns driven by the North American Monsoon, historically characterized by frequent small rain events hypothesized …
