Molten Salt Pump Bearing Design And Test, Yuqi Liu Nov 2022

Molten Salt Pump Bearing Design And Test, Yuqi Liu

Shared Knowledge Conference

Fluoride Salt Cooled High-Temperature Reactors (FHRs) use particle fuel, graphite moderator, and molten fluoride salt coolant for power generation and process heat applications. The main loop of the FHR is a closed loop, operating at slightly above atmospheric pressure, with fluoride salt temperatures exceeding 600 °C. Reliable high-temperature molten salt pumps are critical to the successful deployment of FHRs. To stabilize the rotating shaft and reduce the associated coefficient of friction, molten salt pumps require well-designed bearings. Therefore, it is necessary to study the detailed hydrodynamic performance of bearings under high-temperature molten salt conditions. In the current study, a computational …

Continuing New Mexican Agricultural Customs: A Proposal To Combat The Drought Of Accessibility In The Middle Rio Grande Region, Corina Gomez

Shared Knowledge Conference

As a southwestern state, New Mexico is no stranger to high temperatures and low rates of precipitation. Agricultural water users in the Middle Rio Grande region have successfully designed and cultivated farmland since time immemorial using techniques adapted for this arid environment. Yet, global climate change has shifted a once reliable pattern of precipitation, so that snowmelt begins earlier, and the annual monsoon is exchanged for intense and sporadic rain events. Securing water resources to meet the needs of inhabitants of the Middle Rio Grande region is at the forefront of agricultural users, water managers, and policy makers' minds. This …

Autonomous Space: Incorporating Concepts Of Questioning Into A Wellness Room, Varina A. Kosovich, Kelleen Maluski

Posters and Presentations

When we discuss critical pedagogy much focus is given to the classroom and consultations, but at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC) we have incorporated critical pedagogy into all our spaces. This incorporation extended to the creation of a wellness room for our users. Considering that “The prevalence of depressive symptoms among (health sciences) students was 12.9%, significantly higher than in the general population, and was 16.1% among female students versus 8.1% among males” and incorporating feedback from our users we believed that a space for private decompression and spiritual connection would be useful.* …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Convalescent plasma has been one of the most common treatments for COVID-19, but most clinical trial data to date have not supported its efficacy.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is rigorously selected COVID-19 convalescent plasma with neutralizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies an efficacious treatment for adults hospitalized with COVID-19?

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a multicenter, blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial among adults hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection and acute respiratory symptoms for < 14 days. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned to receive one unit of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (n = 487) or placebo (n = 473). The primary outcome was clinical status (disease severity) 14 days following study infusion measured with a seven-category ordinal scale ranging from discharged from the hospital with resumption of normal activities (lowest score) to death (highest score). The primary outcome was analyzed with a multivariable ordinal regression model, with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) < 1.0 indicating more favorable outcomes with convalescent plasma than with placebo. In secondary analyses, trial participants were stratified according to the presence of endogenous anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies ("serostatus") at randomization. The trial included 13 secondary efficacy outcomes, including 28-day mortality.

RESULTS: Among 974 randomized patients, 960 were included in the primary analysis. Clinical status on the ordinal outcome scale at 14 days did not differ between the convalescent plasma and placebo …

Simulation Of Supercritical Multiphase Flows Using Machine Learning, Nelson P. Longmire Nov 2022

Simulation Of Supercritical Multiphase Flows Using Machine Learning, Nelson P. Longmire

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

In many technologies, such as rocket engines and modern power plants, the pressures of the fluids in these systems have increased to increase efficiency. As a result, the fluids are under pressures higher than the critical pressure meaning the fluids are supercritical. Supercritical fluids are unique as a liquid/gas phase equilibrium no longer exists, and a process called pseudo boiling occurs where the fluid properties have steep gradients, which lead to interesting fluid mechanics and heat transfer characteristics. Our understanding of supercritical fluids has had exciting advances over the years. However, there are still phenomena that are still not well …

The Role Of Self-Efficacy And Emotional Exhaustion In Teacher Considerations Of Job-Related Stressors And Attrition: A Mixed-Methods Study, Raymond Nance

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Teacher attrition is a problem currently afflicting classrooms around the world. Emotional exhaustion and teacher self-efficacy have been demonstrated to be factors in attrition. This study assesses the efficacy of potential tools for use in evaluating emotional exhaustion and self-efficacy before problems arise and to guide professional development in efficacious directions.

This parallel-convergent mixed-methods study performed quantitative regression analyses on the joined effects of emotional exhaustion and self-efficacy to assess their potential mediating role between teachers’ job stressors and considerations of leaving the job. The existence of mediation was demonstrated. Qualitative thematic analysis of transcripts from six interviews with current …

A Rapid High-Precision Analytical Method For Triple Oxygen Isotope Analysis Of Co2 Gas Using Tunable Infrared Laser Direct Absorption Spectroscopy, Nathan Perdue, Zachary Sharp, David Nelson Jr., Rick Wehr, Christoph Dyroff Oct 2022

A Rapid High-Precision Analytical Method For Triple Oxygen Isotope Analysis Of Co2 Gas Using Tunable Infrared Laser Direct Absorption Spectroscopy, Nathan Perdue, Zachary Sharp, David Nelson Jr., Rick Wehr, Christoph Dyroff

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Rationale

The simultaneous analysis of the three stable isotopes of oxygen – triple oxygen isotope analysis – has become an important analytical technique in natural sciences. Determination of the abundance of the rare 17O isotope in CO2 gas using magnetic sector isotope ratio mass spectrometry is complicated by the isobaric interference of 17O by 13C (13C16O16O and 12C16O17O both have mass 45 amu). A number of analytical techniques have been used to measure the 17O/16O ratio of CO2 gas. They …

Plant Responses To Drought In A Semiarid Grassland: An Isotopic Approach, Elizabeth V. Fain

Biology ETDs

Dryland ecosystems are facing unprecedented climate extremes as a result of global climate change. Water is the most limiting factor in dryland ecosystems, therefore plants in drylands have developed crucial water-use strategies for drought survival. It is important to understand plant physiological responses to water stress as drylands are projected to experience more frequent, severe droughts in the coming decades. To test how plants respond to drought in a semiarid grassland, we measured δ13C, δ15N, and C/N ratio of common C3 and C4 plants (Bouteloua gracilis, B. eriopoda, Pleuraphis jamesii, Salsola tragus, Machaeranthera pinnatifida, …

It's Natural, We Have No Choice: Practical Steps For Menstrual Equity In The Library, Varina Kosovich, Sally Bowler-Hill

Posters and Presentations

In 2021, the UNM Health Science’s Library and Informatics Center formed a Justice, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. In response to an upset student’s feedback about the lack of menstrual products on campus, one of the first actions of the Committee was to set up a free menstrual product program at the library. After initial research about what other libraries and institutions had done, pads, panty liners, and tampons were placed in all library restrooms. Because the library does not yet have gender neutral restrooms and in support of transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming folks, this included both the women’s and …

I'M Pretty Sure I'M Worthless If I Can't Be Of Service: Under The Surface Of Resilience Narratives, Alexis Ellsworth-Kopkowski, Kelleen Maluski, Varina A. Kosovich

Posters and Presentations

While the term sustainability is referencing the need to accurately understand how to sustain a service, resource, or other initiative over time it has often become synonymous with a “do more with less” attitude within libraries. When sustainability is mentioned you often hear along with it terms like resilience, change management, and adaptability while rarely hearing about a budget or other forms of support reflective of the work being requested. In this workshop the presenters will discuss the history of resilience narratives within our profession, the need to carve out care for oneself outside of institutional loyalty, and the impact …
