Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough
Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough
Biology ETDs
The paradox of the ‘Great Speciators’ describes a biogeographic pattern in which geographically widespread lineages have strong overwater dispersal capabilities, yet exhibit genetic and phenotypic divergence between islands, suggesting limited dispersal and cessation of gene flow. In my dissertation, I leveraged whole genomes and two comprehensive trait datasets of dispersal ability and plumage coloration of all described diversity within Todiramphus kingfishers, a rapid radiation of largely island endemic ‘Great Speciators.’ Chapter 1 reveals that whole genome datasets do not outright solve the evolutionary relationships of this clade and that widespread incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and gene flow are sources of …

Tongue Posture And Effects On Overall Health: A Dental Hygiene Curriculum Assessment, Kelly Brackeen
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Research shows that proper tongue posture can impact quality of life, stability of the mouth, and have effects on overall wellness. Dental hygienists have a unique position to be able to identify tongue placement disorders. The objective of this study was to identify to what extent dental hygiene students are being taught orofacial myofunction during dental hygiene education. A survey link was emailed to all program directors in the United States regarding the teaching of orofacial myofunction within their respective programs. Using descriptive analysis, 44%, or less than half reported that their program curriculum includes teaching students proper resting position …
Crossing The Ocean: The Importance Of Gene Flow In Island Evolution, Ethan F. Gyllenhaal
Crossing The Ocean: The Importance Of Gene Flow In Island Evolution, Ethan F. Gyllenhaal
Biology ETDs
Islands have long been a critical arena for the development of ecological and evolutionary theory, particular due to persistent open-water gaps between them. In this dissertation I demonstrates how these caps are permeable, which can be leveraged to understand evolution on islands and more broadly. The first chapter develops this connection between ongoing, overwater gene flow and island biogeographic theory, and tests it on an archipelago species. The second take a three-pronged approach in demonstrating how over-water gene flow can bias phylogenetic inference, and how many phylogeographic metrics in islands are likely shaped by long-term gene flow. The final two …

Barriers And Facilitators To Adherence To Behavioral Weight Loss Interventions Among Hispanic/Latina Women, Catalina R. Pacheco
Psychology ETDs
Behavioral weight loss (BWL) interventions can help combat obesity and related diseases, but rates of adherence are often low among Hispanic/Latina women. This study explored barriers and facilitators to adherence among this population. Fourteen women attended focus groups and were asked to identify barriers and facilitators to self-monitoring of food and exercise (SM). They additionally were asked to identify body image-related barriers and facilitators to adherence to meeting diet and exercise goals. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Major suggestions relevant to SM were to intervene on multiple levels (i.e., community, group, individual), incorporate mental healthcare, reduce the burden of …

Motivational Interviewing For Problem And Pathological Gambling: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, David Forman
Motivational Interviewing For Problem And Pathological Gambling: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, David Forman
Psychology ETDs
As legalized gambling becomes more accessible and the prevalence of gambling problems are expected to rise, there is growing interest in effective psychological interventions that reduce gambling problems. A previous meta-analysis (Yakovenko, 2015) concluded that Motivational Interviewing (MI) was associated with significant reductions in gambling frequency and intensity. Yet, that analysis only included five studies and had methodological limitations. Notably, the majority of studies included in the meta-analysis combined MI with another intervention, blurring the effect of MI’s specific contributions on outcomes. To improve upon this work, the current study performed an updated systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis that 1) …
Learning, Optimizing, And Simulating Fermions With Quantum Computers, Andrew Zhao
Learning, Optimizing, And Simulating Fermions With Quantum Computers, Andrew Zhao
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Fermions are fundamental particles which obey seemingly bizarre quantum-mechanical principles, yet constitute all the ordinary matter that we inhabit. As such, their study is heavily motivated from both fundamental and practical incentives. In this dissertation, we will explore how the tools of quantum information and computation can assist us on both of these fronts. We primarily do so through the task of partial state learning: tomographic protocols for acquiring a reduced, but sufficient, classical description of a quantum system. Developing fast methods for partial tomography addresses a critical bottleneck in quantum simulation algorithms, which is a particularly pressing issue for …

Sensitive Developmental Windows In Craniofacial And Dental Fluctuating Asymmetry, Emily Moes
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation examines early life environments and changes in skeletal and dental tissues by focusing on plasticity reflected in fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Chapter 2 shows that microscopic enamel defects on canines are associated with craniofacial FA in two colonial Mexican cemeteries. Chapters 3 and 4 use data from dental casts and associated health records from a 20th century longitudinal growth study. I compare dental FA in the deciduous (chapter 3) and permanent (chapter 4) dentition to sociocultural and environmental stressors. In their prenatal and childhood environments, females’ dental plasticity may be more responsive to frailty or chronic stresses while males …
Physical And Stochiometric Controls On Nutrient Uptake And Ecosystem Respiration In Contrasting Sites, Jancoba K. Dorley
Physical And Stochiometric Controls On Nutrient Uptake And Ecosystem Respiration In Contrasting Sites, Jancoba K. Dorley
Civil Engineering ETDs
Meteorological, hydrological, and biogeochemical processes naturally control stream ecosystems. These processes define the frequency and distribution of precipitation and the supply and demand of solutes and particles to support aquatic food chains through space and time. Studies have also found that stream ecosystems are also controlled by anthropogenic activities, which occur on a much shorter timescale. These anthropogenic activities affect stream ecosystems' structure and function from local to planetary changes to the environment. It is essential for scientists and engineers to understand the relationships between naturally occurring processes and those created by human activities for a better interpretation of stream …

Single-Valued Pentapartitioned Neutrosophic Soft Set, Bimal Shil, Suman Das, Rakhal Das, Surapati Pramanik
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Soft set (SS) and neutrosophic set (NS) are important mathematical concepts to deal with uncertainty. NS was further extended to pentapartitioned neutrosophic set (PNS) to deal with uncertainty comprehensively. In order to expand the concept of single-valued pentapartitioned neutrosophic set (SVPNS) and SS, the paper aims to introduce the concept of single-valued pentapartitioned neutrosophic soft set (SVPNS-Set) by adding the ideas of SS and SVPNS together. Furthermore, based on SVPNS-Set, several definitions, examples, properties, propositions and theorems have been established.

Approach To Multi-Criteria Decision-Making In A Neutrosophic Picture Hyper-Soft Set Environment Using Generalized Neutrosophic Topsis, Manpreet Kaur, Akanksha Singh
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Given the complexity of today’s world, we might need to work with numbers requiring multi-attribute functions, such as those having positive, neutral, and negative membership and those having truth, indeterminacy, and falsity membership. Adding these numbers together to get a single real number is the most important factor. In situations like this, decision-makers have more difficult choices and are unable to apply the single attribute function of the soft set theory. To address this constraint, the hyper-soft set theory with multi-attribute functions is introduced. We combine the notion of neutrosophic hypersoft set with picture fuzzy hypersoft set to form a …

Evaluation Strategies Of Leadership Management In Healthcare Systems: An Integrated Type-Ii Neutrosophic Optimization Approach, Areej Hamoud Alharbi, Hayam M. Jabali, Preethi Rajan
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study presented a decision-making methodology to evaluate leadership management strategies in healthcare systems. This study used the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology to deal with conflicting criteria in the decision-making process. The MCDM methodology is integrated with neutrosophic sets to deal with uncertainty and vague information in decision-making. The neutrosophic set has three memberships: truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. The type-2 neutrosophic set is a subset of the neutrosophic set with nine membership degrees. The neutrosophic set integrated with the COPRAS method to rank the alternatives. fourteen criteria and eleven alternatives are used to evaluate leadership management in healthcare systems. The …

"Everyone Got To Eat My Tears": Racialized Emotions, Mentoring Practices, And The Political And Ethical Commitments Of Women Of Color Graduate Students In Stem, Machienvee V. Lammey
Sociology ETDs
In this project, I examine the emotional and lived experiences of women of color (WOC) graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and how they embody and negotiate racism, classism, and sexism in academia, particularly in White, men-dominated STEM spaces. I utilize critical race theory and intersectionality to shed light on how WOC draw upon their intersecting identities, marginalization, and sense of community to navigate and resist oppressive environments. Specifically, I highlight the ways they experience racialized emotions and leverage vulnerability to resist dominant academic norms and controlling images to preserve their holistic selves, engage in critical reflexivity …
