Pathology Research and Scholarship

Reducing foodborne disease incidence is a public health priority. This report summarizes preliminary 2023 Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) data and highlights efforts to increase the representativeness of FoodNet. During 2023, incidences of domestically acquired campylobacteriosis, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection, yersiniosis, vibriosis, and cyclosporiasis increased, whereas those of listeriosis, salmonellosis, and shigellosis remained stable compared with incidences during 2016-2018, the baseline used for tracking progress towards federal disease reduction goals. During 2023, the incidence and percentage of infections diagnosed by culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs) reported to FoodNet continued to increase, and the percentage of cases that yielded an …

In the future, city skies will be filled with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for rapid urban transport, including parcel deliveries and air taxis. NASA's Urban Air Mobility (UAM) envisions UAVs navigating air corridors. These virtual pathways ensure safety and compliance with regulations. However, current research on UAM practical applications is limited. This dissertation focuses on designing air corridors, developing UAV control systems, and ensuring the robustness of control algorithms against disturbances in real-world environments.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer. Rectal cancer patients face genitourinary dysfunction, impacting physical, psychological, and social well-being. This study examined the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in rectal cancer patients to assess the impact of sexual dysfunction on quality of life (QoL).

This mixed method study included 19 completing the survey portion and 10 completing an interview, evenly split between men and women, and those with and

This article examines the pervasive issue of algorithmic bias, particularly within large language models (LLMs) and the legal system. American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals are underrepresented in mindfulness research. Mindfulness may be relevant to some AI/AN traditions and aid in providing culturally responsive mental healthcare. This study examined the experiences of providers who use mindfulness-based interventions with AI/AN clients. Twenty-five providers completed interviews about their experiences. Three primary themes were identified using thematic analysis: 1) using a cultural lens in providing therapy, where providers integrate cultural practices and utilize a client centered approach; 2) framing mindfulness in AI/AN contexts through cultural adaptations to demonstrate the applicability of mindfulness to cultural settings; and 3) processes in implementing culturally …

This study investigates the educational quality of graduate programs at public universities by employing neutrosophic set theory and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The analysis centers on three crucial factors: Teacher Training and Education (TTE), Educational and Technological Resources (ETR), and School Environment and Academic Climate (SEA). The results demonstrate that the combination of ETR (Educational Technology Readiness) and SEA (Student Engagement and Achievement) is the most reliable indicator of educational quality, with the highest overall metric of 0.826292. This article uses the Delphi and neutrosophic analytic hierarchy process (NAHP) and neutrosophic social choice theory (NSC). NAHP+NSC methodology is used to investigate the potential direct effects of a rise in the Value Added Tax (VAT) on company sales. This study applied plithogenic statistics to evaluate how different doses of guinea pig manure affect the cultivation of Opuntia ficus-indica (commonly known as prickly pear) and soil quality. It was determined that 7.5 tons/ha, referred to as treatment T3, is the optimal dose, as it maximizes the growth and production of the plant, improves plant height, and increases the production of buttons and berries. T3 also optimized organic matter and adjusted the pH to ideal levels, maintaining a nutritional balance that ensures the availability of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Parasitic diseases caused by Cysticercus tenuicollis significantly impact the livestock industry. The quantification of such impacts presents challenges due to the handling of data obtained through modern molecular techniques. This investigation explores the application of neutrosophic cluster analysis to the study of Cysticercus tenuicollis DNA. Neutrosophic clustering and the use of linguistic terms help interpret analyses, employing a five-step neutrosophic clustering algorithm: selection of the clustering algorithm, definition of distance metrics, data preparation, algorithm execution, and examination of results. Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus that has been shown to have the potential to control the potato white grub (Premnotrypes vorax), a pest that significantly affects potato production, especially in Ecuador. Therefore, the present study has focused on evaluating the effectiveness of Beauveria bassiana in the control of the potato white grub under laboratory conditions. To this end, neutrosophic statistics have been used to analyze larval mortality, by applying concentrations of 〖10〗^4, 〖10〗^6 and 〖10〗^8 conidia of Beauveria bassiana by spraying and immersion. Identity Configuration Of Physician Clinician Educators: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsey D. White

This study explores identities of physician clinician educators (CEs) and finds that their identities are multiple and that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted CE identity configuration. Following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design (quan -> QUAL), participants (n = 115) completed the Physician Clinician Educator Identity Survey (PCEIS) and semi-structured interviews (n = 12). Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a three-factor model; the PCEIS is an acceptable measure of singular CE identity, collective identity, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CE identity. I present three essays that contribute to understanding the secondary costs and benefits associated with programs that address homelessness and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. The first essay investigates whether homeless shelters impact property values. Despite anecdotal claims of property devaluation, endogeneity challenges limit empirical research on homelessness programs. Using data from the Department of Housing (HUD) and Seattle’s King County Department of Assessment, I address these challenges using spatial difference-in-differences methodology, revealing nuanced effects favoring permanent supportive housing. Due to generalized botanical collecting practices, herbarium specimens provide important long term data dating back hundreds of years. The historical data preserved in herbaria can be used to study biological responses to climate change, such as changes in plant phenology, across various habitats including understudied alpine ecosystems. This study will use historical data from over one hundred years of plant collecting, along with updated collecting and community science efforts, to investigate how climate change is influencing alpine plant phenology in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Water users depend on institutional flexibility to efficiently allocate water in legally constrained and overallocated basins. Adaptive market-based mechanisms such as water banking proffer flexibility and fairness, but often face practical challenges fueled by empirical and institutional uncertainties. The Santa Fe Water Bank is a case in point. The City of Santa Fe transfers agricultural water rights from the Middle Rio Grande to its municipal Water Bank for sustainable development. This study focused on evaluating the perceptions of a group of call center operators in Quito regarding their work envi-ronment using Plithogenic statistics to address the complexity and ambiguity of the responses. The sample included 114 workers from three companies, assessed using the Battery of the Ministry of Social Protection of Colombia and a work stress questionnaire. The results revealed high job demands, perceived as stressful by employees, although satisfaction with the rewards received was shown. The project was conducted in the Ashigua páramo, Mulaló, Latacunga, Cotopaxi province. Its objective was to develop a composite environmental sustainability indicator for the conservation of the páramo. Neutrosophic logic and the PRO-METHEE TODIM method were used to select and evaluate sub-indicators in a context of uncertain and complex envi-ronmental data. Neutrosophic logic facilitated the management of ambiguities and contradictions in the data. The find-ings highlighted the relevance of sub-indicators linked to carbon storage and ecological productivity. Through questionnaires administered to veterinary experts and the use of neutrosophic logic for hypothesis test-ing, perceptions based on clinical experiences and scientific literature were analyzed. The results indicate strong agree-ment that propolis is effective and safe, surpassing some aspects of conventional antibiotic treatments and demonstrating high tolerability without serious side effects. This study evaluated the effects of biostimulants on two varieties of amaranth, Valentina (Amaranthus tricolor) and Ne-zhenka (Amaranthus hybridus), in terms of germination, growth, and biomass production. Using neutrosophic statistics allowed for the measurement of indeterminacies and the analysis of variables such as days to germination, stem length, number of leaves, and biomass production. The results showed that seaweed extract was the most effective biostimulant, accelerating germination, increasing stem length and the number of leaves, and maximizing biomass production. Mean-while, Nezhenka stood out for its superior biomass production, especially with seaweed extract, while Valentina was no-table for its rapid germination. …

Orality, as the primary form of communication in these communities, is essential for the transmission of agricultural and cultural knowledge.
