Diagnostic Evaluation Of Dizziness In Obstetric Triage, Annslee J. Lowe, Anna Shields
Diagnostic Evaluation Of Dizziness In Obstetric Triage, Annslee J. Lowe, Anna Shields
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
Dizziness is a non-specific term used to describe various sensations of spinning, disequilibrium, imbalance, or near-syncope. The differential diagnosis for this symptom is rather extensive and includes potentially dangerous etiologies, which contributes to the significance of diagnostic evaluation. Dizziness is a frequent concern prompting pregnant patients to seek medical care, and the hemodynamic changes that occur in pregnancy further complicate clinical assessment in obstetric (OB) triage. While often familiar with dizziness as a symptom of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, many OB triage providers experience uncertainty in working up other causes of dizziness. Root causes for uncertainty and the potential for …

Students Exploring Careers In Occupational Therapy, Shayna Kymes, Mary Thelander
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
To engage students from rural and underserved communities, the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program participated in a Students Exploring Careers in Health (SECiH) event. We introduced the students to Occupational Therapy (OT) during the morning and provided three examples of assessments during the afternoon portion. We chose to have them explore one handed baby dressing, name as many animals as they can in 60 seconds per the Animal Naming Test (ANT) and the Minnesota Spatial Relations Test. We chose these assessments as the ANT is an equipment free test that can be given bedside to test for minimal or covert hepatic …

Quality Improvement: Supporting Vulnerable Patients In Medicaid Enrollment, Annslee J. Lowe, Sahana Ummadi, Riana R. Wurzburger
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
Many patients experiencing homelessness also lack health insurance. These patients are often eligible for federal insurance programs, but lack the resources needed to enroll. Well-meaning clinicians and social workers generally do not have the time or resources to address these disparities. The lack of a centralized process for Medicaid enrollment for patients experiencing homelessness perpetuates adverse health outcomes due to multiple factors. 1) Lack of care: avoidance of seeking health care and minimal preventative care; 2) poor quality care: compared to patients with more resources; 3) lack of follow-up: in part due to unreliable contact information; and 4) “non-adherence”: often …
Diagnostic Evaluation Of Palpitations In Obstetric Triage, Annslee J. Lowe, Anna Shields
Diagnostic Evaluation Of Palpitations In Obstetric Triage, Annslee J. Lowe, Anna Shields
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
Palpitations are a common reason for pregnant patients to pursue medical evaluation. The range of etiologies that can contribute to palpitations is broad and includes life-threatening causes, while the physiologic changes in systemic hemodynamics that occur in pregnancy add further complexity to medical decision making in obstetric (OB) triage. While the literature suggests that diagnostic evaluation of palpitations in pregnant patients does not meaningfully differ from that of non-pregnant patients, many OB triage providers experience uncertainty in working up palpitations in pregnancy. Within University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) OB Triage, underlying causes for uncertainty were assessed and found to …

Critical Geospatial Data Science: Principles For Curating, Analyzing, And Sharing Geospatial Data, Daniel Beene
Critical Geospatial Data Science: Principles For Curating, Analyzing, And Sharing Geospatial Data, Daniel Beene
Geography ETDs
Critical geospatial data science (CGDS) offers principles for engaging with geospatial data, methods, and translation by pulling from critical epistemologies in geography. CGDS interrogates objective “truths” in science by actively engaging in critique of geospatial data and methodologies. Specifically, CGDS contends with the political context and motivations behind geospatial data science (GDS) while using GDS methods to understand how social-spatial arrangements manifest and are reinforced through data. CGDS explicitly aims to inform practices for criticality from within GDS and provides opportunities for multidisciplinary research that incorporates social theories, contextualizes geospatial data, and critically evaluates the effects and ethics of (under)representation …
A Dream Deferred: Communism, Secession, And The Decline Of Hardrock Unionism, Dominic Alexander Treadwell
A Dream Deferred: Communism, Secession, And The Decline Of Hardrock Unionism, Dominic Alexander Treadwell
History ETDs
This thesis examines how the changing conditions after World War II impacted organized labor, focusing on secession movements within the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers. Secessions in Connecticut and Alabama and the differing responses by the CIO Executive Board highlight how external pressures from postwar dynamics and increasing anticommunism undermined the left-liberal alliance in the Congress of Industrial Organizations. World War II increased labor’s reliance on government mediation, reducing the effectiveness of militant strategies. Following the war, assertive capital, restrictive labor legislation, the Cold War, and the rise in anti-Communism exacerbated tensions in the CIO, leading to …

The Valles caldera is a rhyolitic “supervolcano” formed 1.231 Ma. An understanding of whether Valles caldera is currently deforming is needed to inform volcanic hazard estimates for northern New Mexico and will allow for a better understanding of the hazards presented by other rhyolitic caldera systems. Here, we present an InSAR time series of the Valles Caldera using 37 interferograms, spanning 2014 to 2022, which show a small but consistent signal of broad pattern subsidence/yr. We also present GNSS observations from a survey conducted in October 2022 and compare the results to surveys in 2002 and 2003 to estimate the …
Conserved Mechanisms Of Drug Induced Lifespan Extension In S. Cerevisiae And C. Elegans, Christine E. Robbins
Conserved Mechanisms Of Drug Induced Lifespan Extension In S. Cerevisiae And C. Elegans, Christine E. Robbins
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Aging is a phenomenon that brings aches, pains and a risk of developing diseases. Many researchers have discovered pathways that regulate aging by altering gene expression. Understanding genetic regulation of aging is key but identifying drugs that target aging will result in translatable treatments. Additionally, understanding how drugs are interacting with our cells allows us to create targeted therapies. I study two types of drugs. First, tRNA synthetase inhibitors are a class of drugs that inhibit charging of tRNAs. I identified a mechanism of lifespan extension by upregulation of the conserved transcription factor, Gcn4 / Atf-4. Second, I found that …

Breaking The Silence: Autoethnographic Account Of Communication In The Aftermath Of Parental Suicide, Marissa L. Lucero
Communication ETDs
The silence that surrounds the suicide of a parent often masks unresolved feelings of guilt, shame, and powerlessness in families grieving their loss. For children, the long-lasting impact of suppressing communication about parental suicide can endure throughout adulthood. In this autoethnography, I un-salience my voice to reflect on my father’s suicide in the context of my Nuevo Mexicana identity. I assert my Chicana feminist voice through an extraction of gendered and culturally grounded memories, personal journal entries from my childhood, and a review of academic sources on suicide. This thesis is a personal and intellectual engagement with Chicana/o critical theory, …

On The Surface Topography Of Local Overheating And Plasma Formation Due To Initial Condition Perturbations Sourcing The Electrothermal Instability On High-Current-Density Conductors, Maren Whiting Hatch
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The electrothermal instability (ETI) is a Joule heating-driven instability that instigates runaway heating on conductors driven to high current density, altering the 3D evolution of the expansion and phase state. Most metals include complex distributions of imperfections (voids, resistive inclusions) which seed ETI. To simplify comparison with modeling and theory, experiments examined growth of ETI from various alloys of stainless steel as well as relatively void/inclusion free, 99.999% pure, diamond-turned, 1 mm-diameter aluminum rods. Aluminum surfaces included a variety of deliberately machined and well-characterized perturbations, including 10-micron-scale quasi-hemispherical voids, or “engineered” defects (ED), and sinusoidal patterns of varying wavelength and …

Cell And Molecular Mechanisms Of Plasticity And Injury Associated With Spreading Depolarization, Jordan E. Weisend
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Spreading depolarization (SD) is now established as a critical event contributing to the expansion of acute brain injuries. In areas with insufficient access to metabolites, SD results in episodic glutamate accumulation and NMDA receptor over-activation. Intriguingly, in areas with sufficient access to metabolites SD can result in synaptic strengthening, together suggesting SD consequences may vary widely based on metabolic context. Utilizing acute murine brain slices, this dissertation sought to interrogate the cell and molecular mechanisms of SD induced detriment and revitalization. We describe evidence that the primary NMDAR subtype involved in SD is GluN2A-containing NMDARs, and when targeted during SD …

Pulsed Secondary Electron Yield Measurements Of Metallic And Dielectric Materials Of Interest For High Power Vacuum Electron Devices, Bilal Ahmed Malik
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Secondary electron emission (SEE) from conductors is thought to play an important role in the initiation of Multipactor breakdown in vacuum electron devices. The SEE of dielectric materials plays a crucial role in numerous scientific and technological applications, including particle accelerators, spacecraft charging, and plasma diagnostics. Additionally, the SEE of an insulator may depend on its electrical stress history. In both cases, SEE strongly depends on any conditioning of the material surface. We present measurements on both conducting and insulating materials of interest in these applications. Measurements are being made in an existing test stand, recently modified to enable measurements …
