Scatter-gather dynamic-memory-access (SG-DMA) is utilized in applications that require high bandwidth and low latency data transfers between memory and peripherals, where data blocks, described using buffer descriptors (BDs), are distributed throughout the memory system. The data transfer organization and requirements of a Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer (TIQC) possess characteristics similar to those targeted by SG-DMA. In particular, the ion qubits in a TIQC are manipulated by applying control sequences consisting primarily of modulated laser pulses. Mitophagy, the process by which cells eliminate damaged mitochondria, is mediated by PINK1 (PTEN induced kinase 1). Our recent research indicates that PINK1 functions as a tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer by regulating cellular metabolism. Interestingly, PINK1 ablation activated the NLRP3 (NLR family pyrin domain containing 3) inflammasome, releasing IL1B (interleukin 1 beta). However, inhibiting the NLRP3-IL1B signaling pathway with an IL1R (interleukin 1 receptor) antagonist or NLRP3 inhibitor did not hinder colon tumor growth after PINK1 loss. To identify druggable targets in PINK1-deficient tumors, ribonucleic acid sequencing analysis was performed on colon tumors from pink1 knockout and wild-type mice. …

For many, symptom resolution occurs relatively quickly after traumatic brain injury (TBI), however some people experience symptoms that can last for months and even years. Apathy is a symptom that can cause disruption after TBI. While cannabis has been suggested to treat several symptoms and conditions related to TBI, given the historical association with apathy, investigation of the relationship is imperative. Humans have fundamentally altered the planet’s biodiversity. It is critical to characterize these changes, but also to understand how they impact the structure and function of modern ecosystems. This dissertation investigates how anthropogenically mediated species losses and/or introductions influence ecological function and community structure in mammals across multiple temporal and spatial scales. We found that selective loss of large-bodied mammals over the Late Quaternary has led to severe losses in functional diversity in modern ecosystems, suggesting megafaunal mammals contribute distinct ecological functions. Ambient Noise Tomography Of The Southern M9.2 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake Rupture Area, Joshua Ojuoluwa Osasona

We used data from a densely spaced node array to investigate seismic velocity structure within the southern rupture area of the M9.2 1964 Great Alaska earthquake. The node array was deployed along a ~50 km section of the road system on Kodiak Island as part of the Alaska Amphibious Community Seismic Experiment (AACSE). The full ~400-node array was active for 25 days in May-June 2019. We extracted Rayleigh wave dispersion curves from ambient noise cross-correlations between station pairs in the node array to compute phase velocity maps from 2-8 s periods. How Wildfires Threaten Water Resources: A Case Study Following The Largest Wildfire Recorded In New Mexico, Eric A. Joseph

Wildfire disturbance propagation along fluvial networks remains poorly understood. We use incident, atmospheric, and water-quality data from the largest wildfire in New Mexico’s history to quantify how this gigafire affected surface runoff processes and mobilized wildfire disturbances into fluvial networks after burning 1382 km². Surface runoff post-fire increased compared to pre-fire conditions, and precipitation events that are frequently observed in the affected watershed (<2-year recurrence) and fell during the post-fire first rainy season resulted in uncorrelated, less frequently observed runoff events (10-year recurrence). Wavelet coherence analysis highlighted that water quality disturbances propagated variably along the network, even at sites located >160 km downstream of the burn perimeter. Our findings emphasize the need to incorporate spatially resolved longitudinal sampling designs into wildfire water quality research and highlight the spatiotemporal co-dependency among atmospheric, terrestrial, aquatic processes …

This Thesis develops a one-step predictive run-to-run controller (R2R-MPC) for automating a mechanical serial sectioning (MSS) system. MSS is a destructive material analysis process that iteratively removes slices of material and captures 2D images, reconstructing them into 3D representations. Commonly used in material science for characterizing materials and failure analysis, MSS typically operates in an open-loop fashion, which experiences high variability in material removal due to system disturbances. To address this, a robust closed-loop R2R-MPC is presented, modeling MSS process uncertainty using a linear differential inclusion identified from operational historical data. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global health concern, driving the need for novel

therapeutic strategies. This study explores the antimicrobial efficacy of conjugated

polyelectrolytes (CPEs) and oligo-phenylene ethynylenes (OPEs) in bacterial and viral

inactivation. Quantitative analysis revealed that light-activated CPEs and OPEs

effectively reduced bacterial viability within minutes, with significant log reductions

observed under both light and dark conditions. Additionally, the antiviral potential of a

cationic conjugated oligomer was investigated, demonstrating rapid and near-complete

inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 under visible light, both in solution and on filter materials.

Further analysis of their photophysical properties revealed that, even after

Understanding the performance of wideband modulated signals under noise jamming conditions is important for advancing W/V-band military satellite communications. This research developed and validated models to predict performance degradation of a communication channel in the presence of wideband noise jamming. Channel models were developed that included both modulated communication signals and jammer signals. Integrated models included environmental link factors and practical implementation factors. Integrated models were verified and validated using outdoor radio frequency environments utilizing two W/V-band transceivers, a portable W-band jammer, and software defined radios. This thesis presents contributions to resource allocation and decision-making in edge computing environments. The TRUST-ME model is introduced, involving multiple edge servers and IoT devices (users) offloading computing tasks to MEC servers. A utility function is designed to assess latency and cost benefits for IoT devices using server resources. Longitudinal Pedestrian Safety Trends By Vehicle Type And Model: A 2015-2022 Study Of Texas, Olivia Tafoya

We observed pickup trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars and their two most popular vehicle models across Texas from 2015 through 2022. For each vehicle type and model, we obtained all reported pedestrian crashes, counts of registered vehicles, and vehicle design characteristics. Results suggest that older vehicles are more likely to seriously injure or kill a pedestrian than newer ones. They also indicate that SUVs were more deadly, after controlling for exposure using the number of registered vehicles, than other vehicle types. Of the models studied, the full-size SUVs proved to be particularly dangerous for pedestrians, being 2.08 times more likely …

Qubits encoded within internal energy levels of atoms and ions have been used to demonstrate high-performance primitives of quantum computing for small numbers of qubits. Yet, the path to achieving sufficient size and fidelity for useful fault-tolerant quantum computation remains daunting. In this dissertation, I present several techniques I developed as steps along this path. These results include high-fidelity, low-loss detection for alkali atoms in optical tweezers, crosstalk-mitigated parallel one-qubit gates, robust entangling gates on trapped ions, and leakage-to-erasure conversion for non-destructive detection of atom loss errors. This paper broadens the concept of effective community participation in disaster risk reduction by analyzing three case studies that emphasize unconventional, locally driven approaches. Using a multi-case study method, I examine forms of participation that challenge traditional top-down models and focus on local knowledge and community agency. In Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico, a co-designed environmental data dashboard with Pueblo members demonstrates how integrating Indigenous knowledge can enhance disaster preparedness. Dental Therapy In Washington State: Exploring Dental Hygienists’ Perceptions And Attitudes Towards An Emerging Workforce Model, Soy Mouy Gearheart

Purpose: This study examines dental hygienists' perceptions of dental therapy in Washington State. Methods: A cross-sectional survey utilizing a Likert-scale questionnaire was conducted among dental hygienists recruited from Washington State Dental Jobs Facebook groups. Descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation analysis examined key variables. Results:Of the 46 participants (n=46), 72% reported that they believed dental therapy could improve access to care in underserved areas. Concerns about current educational standards for safe practice were noted. 11% expressed interest in pursuing a dental therapy degree within the next five years, motivated by interest and career opportunities. Notably, 67% of all male respondents indicated …
