Custom Cathode Optimization For Electropolishing Additively Manufactured 316l Stainless Steel, Kasandra Escarcega Herrera

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has become increasingly popular for its ability to rapidly manufacture complex metallic parts. However, the surface properties of as-built LPBF parts may degrade overall performance due to tortuous surface features. Consequently, post-processing like electropolishing (EP) to reduce the surface asperities is often needed for LPBF parts to perform as expected. Utilizing experimental and computational approaches, this project aims to more uniformly EP complex shaped parts made from LPBF 316L. For the experimental approach, parts with a three-dimensional T-shape were printed out of 316L stainless steel and EP using an acidic-based and a polyethylene glycol/NaCl-based electrolyte. …

Validation Of A Culturally Adapted Neuropsychology Screening Measure Among Older American Indians, Katherine A. Edwards

American Indian (AI) older adults are most at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in the United States. However, there are no cognitive screening tools validated or normed for AI populations, limiting the diagnostic accuracy of current tools. In this study, a culturally adapted screening tool was adapted for three different sites with older AI adults, and validated against widely used neurocognitive screening measures to determine convergent validity. Results found that adapted story memory scores were significantly higher than unadapted scores. Additionally, culturally salient story memory scores were more consistent with measures of crystalized intelligence, while unadapted story …

Language Use Of Emergent Bilingual Latino/A Students In A Music Class Setting, Karen G. Granados Dumais

This study investigated the way in which emergent bilingual students utilize their linguistic repertoire in order to achieve new learning. Previous research has suggested that bilingual students learn differently than their monolingual counterparts due to their varying linguistic repertoires. Research has also suggested that translanguaging and culturally relevant teaching are valuable frameworks to adopt in the classroom, as they result in a better academic experience for all students.

William Holmes interviews his grandmother Rosetta Holmes, a member of the Choctaw Nation, on her upbringing, life, and various stories from her childhood. She goes through how her family ended up in Hugo, Oklahoma. Her small town upbringing, how she met her husband, starting her family, and her education and the various jobs she has worked in her life. This was a project for oral history 300 at the University of New Mexico in which William used this opportunity to hear about his family and learn about his ancestors.

International borders not only serve as the edge of a nation-state's sovereign territory, but they also aid in informing popular conceptions of its national identity. This study examines how the Mexico - U.S. border served as a spark for episodes of American nationalism from 1821-1920. In examining three historical periods whereby the border was forming, disrupted, or challenged, I demonstrate how borders serve as sources, both symbolically and physically for the expressions of American nationalism. I utilize inductive qualitative discourse analysis of American actors embedded along the border, in Mexico, or serving as political leaders, to sample some of the …

Determinants Of Child Care Subsidy Policies In The American States: A Mixed-Method Investigation In The Era Of Covid-19, Hailey Heinz

This mixed-method dissertation investigates policy variation in states’ administration of the federal child care subsidy program (CCDF). The quantitative chapters draw on a 50-state, ten-year dataset to examine associations between state characteristics and CCDF policy outcomes. These analyses conclude that state-level drivers of CCDF policy are distinct from drivers identified in the cash welfare literature, and that drivers vary across dimensions of CCDF policy. The qualitative chapters report results from a comparative case study examining CCDF policy in New Mexico and Nevada from 2010 to 2022. Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is an enveloped positive-sense RNA virus in the alphavirus genus of the Togaviridea family, that causes encephalitis in humans and equids. Currently no FDA-approved vaccine or treatment is available for human use, emphasizing the importance of studying host-VEEV interaction. lncRNAs are regulatory RNAs involved in modulation of antiviral pathways during viral infections. Here we report differential lncRNAs expression in primary mouse astrocytes and neurons during non-pathogenic (TC-83) but not pathogenic (TrD) VEEV infection. We further demonstrated that suppression of four lncRNAs increased TC-83 replication, with lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 15 (Snhg15) increasing TC-83 …

This report presents findings from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center’s (HSC) participation in the ITHAKA S+R study Making AI Generative for Higher Education. Seven faculty members from HSC disciplines including internal medicine, pathology, psychiatry, nursing, radiology, and population health were interviewed to explore their perspectives on generative AI (GenAI) in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and institutional support. A unique theme of “practice” emerged, reflecting how GenAI is influencing clinical care, bench-to-bedside translation, and the preparation of students for future professional practice. This dissertation study utilized practitioner research to analyze a developmental reading and writing course focused on an accelerated curriculum, problem-based learning, and a sociocultural perspective on academic literacy, which I taught at a community college. The study collected information-rich data from three students who participated in semi-structured interviews. This study applied the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing to analyze the course curriculum and resulted in recommended changes to three assignments based on the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing: (1) The Educational Autobiography, (2) the Summary Assignment, and (3) Letter Assignment, and four themes based on the student …
