Thepainlesspush.Com: Development Of A Bilingual Patient Education Website About Pain Relief Options In Labor, Lauren Faber, Kylee Greider, Katherine M. Seligman Sep 2018

Thepainlesspush.Com: Development Of A Bilingual Patient Education Website About Pain Relief Options In Labor, Lauren Faber, Kylee Greider, Katherine M. Seligman

HSC Education Days

The Painless Push (www.thepainlesspush.com) was created to provide patients up-to-date, scientifically accurate information about pain relief options for labor and delivery. Estimates report that 46% of New Mexico’s population is functionally illiterate. These individuals may fail to identify a sales receipt total or information in an article, which makes providing patient educational material (PEM) challenging. 28.7% of the population reports Spanish as their primary language. Our goal was to provide scientifically accurate information in English and Spanish that serves limited-literacy individuals. Previous recommendations suggest PEM be written at a 6th grade level, but readability scores can be inflated by medical …

Healthcare Worker Burnout: Lean In Or Walk Away, Debra Serrino Sep 2018

Healthcare Worker Burnout: Lean In Or Walk Away, Debra Serrino

HSC Education Days

This presentation will explore the resources available at UNM for health care workers at a time of great change in the health care industry. Both authors have worked and taught hospice and end of life care for nursing students. Hospice has a long history of health care worker support.

Daylong workshops off-sites for the interprofessional hospice team are held yearly or twice a year at some agencies. The hospice team includes doctors, nurses, aides, social worker, volunteers, office workers, and chaplains. Monthly support groups help workers process the feelings associated with bearing witness to suffering and cumulative deaths. These groups …

A Kidney Biopsy Simulation Training Program: First Year's Results, Maria E. Roumelioti, Jonathan Owen, Christos Argyropoulos, Yue H. Ng, Mark Unruh

HSC Education Days

BACKGROUND: Nephrology attracts fewer medical graduates despite the growing care and workforce demand. Interventional Nephrology could re-foster interest in this subspecialty. Percutaneous kidney biopsy (PKB) is the most common procedure and should be adequately taught through simulation training according to ACGME requirements. We initiated a PKB simulation training program and we designed a two-year study in order to examine its effect on the confidence level, the procedural competence and the satisfaction with this training of Nephrology fellows compared to historical controls (fellows trained on PKBs before the initiation of the program).

METHODS: All fellows were consented and trained at UNM’s …

A Partnership Between The Graduate Resource Center And College Of Nursing, Stephanie Sanchez, Heidi Rogers Sep 2018

A Partnership Between The Graduate Resource Center And College Of Nursing, Stephanie Sanchez, Heidi Rogers

HSC Education Days

As nursing professionals returning to school to pursue an advanced degree in nursing (MSN), academic writing can be a new skill that is unfamiliar to students even as they are expected to have mastered this skill prior to entering a graduate program. In Fall 2017, the College of Nursing and the Graduate Resource Center partnered to provide MSN students with writing interventions to help bridge the gap between skill level and expectations. These interventions included an online writing course, a comprehensive writing workshop based on faculty feedback that was offered during orientation and submitting a writing assignment for review through …

Intradisciplinary Nursing Simulations: Advanced Practice Nursing With Bsn Students Msn, Rn, Adreanne Cordova, Herica Torres, Debra Serrino, Sharon Schaaf, Joseph Poole

HSC Education Days

With the increasing enrollment of advanced practice nursing students (APN) and the increasing literature supporting interprofessional simulation encouraging a team-based approach for safe patient care, a new clinical relationship among our APN (AGACNP and Midwifery) and BSN (Levels 4 and 5) students has been created at our college. This partnership has yielded an experience rich with collaboration, communication, and collective problem solving for patient care. Both BSN and APN students have gained more experience in: clear SBAR communication, working collaboratively and advocating for patient safety during the simulations in which they practice together. The intraprofessional nursing experience yields prepared, professional, …

Overcoming Resistance In Learning: Bridging The Gap Between Educator And Learner, Alisa C. Illescas, Patrick Rendon, Rebecca Hartley Sep 2018

Overcoming Resistance In Learning: Bridging The Gap Between Educator And Learner, Alisa C. Illescas, Patrick Rendon, Rebecca Hartley

HSC Education Days

Block chair faculty organized a book club to gain insight into how to best help students at UNM SOM. “Why Students Resist Learning,” by authors Anton O. Tolman and Janine Kremling became a central resource for faculty. The phenomenon of resistance in learning is a set of attitudes or behaviors that can be overtly or covertly demonstrated by learners in an educational setting and ultimately result in decreased learning and performance. Resistance is a fluid and multifactorial state. Factors include learning environment, individual characteristics of the learner, and teaching style. In order to maximize student learning and success at UNM …

Comparison Of A Flipped Classroom To A Traditional Format In A Critical Care Curriculum, Erik Kraai, Shozab Ahmed, Benjamin Deaton, Tyler Shackelford, Michel Boivin Sep 2018

Comparison Of A Flipped Classroom To A Traditional Format In A Critical Care Curriculum, Erik Kraai, Shozab Ahmed, Benjamin Deaton, Tyler Shackelford, Michel Boivin

HSC Education Days

Medical education has seen a paradigm shift away from traditional lecture-based teaching towards learner-centered strategies such as problem-based learning and the flipped classroom. The intensive care unit (ICU) poses unique challenges as a learning environment and teaching is complicated by high clinical demands, duty hour restrictions, and unpredictable schedules. The flipped or inverted classroom utilizes pre-class videos to deliver content to the learner prior to in-class sessions that apply fundamental concepts. The potential benefits of the flipped classroom method include the ability of learners to learn new material at their own pace outside the classroom and to engage in active …

The Parietal Notch: A Surgical Landmark For Students Learning Mastoid Surgery, Michael Castle, Bradley Pickett Sep 2018

The Parietal Notch: A Surgical Landmark For Students Learning Mastoid Surgery, Michael Castle, Bradley Pickett

HSC Education Days

Mastoidectomy is a procedural skill that must be mastered by otolaryngology residents to perform otologic surgery. Surgical exposure of the middle and inner ear through the mastoid using cadaveric specimens is a standard simulation method to teach three-dimensional anatomy of the ear to residents. Neurovascular structures, sensory organs and minute components of the hearing apparatus are hidden inside dense bone, and therefore, exposing these delicate features is challenging. Landmarks on the mastoid surface guide the initial dissection, using a drill, allowing the operator to identify deeper landmarks. For novice surgeons, these landmarks are critical to perform safe otologic surgery. We …

Anatomy Integration: Effective Change Or Change Of Affect?, Martina Rosenberg, Gary A. Smith, Rebecca Hartley Sep 2018

Anatomy Integration: Effective Change Or Change Of Affect?, Martina Rosenberg, Gary A. Smith, Rebecca Hartley

HSC Education Days

Anatomy is fundamental to clinical practice, and is key to professional identity formation. Many US medical schools are integrating anatomy into an organ–based preclinical curricula. This curricular change could affect one or more of the three domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor, including learner preparation to work in teams.

Our previous study prospectively queried the effects of integrating anatomy into the existing organ-based curriculum at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Results showed that students with integrated anatomy initially increased content acquisition, but had similar mastery of anatomical concepts at the end of the first year of …

Facilitating A Resident-Run Journal Club: Fostering Autonomy Within A Time-Honored Tradition, Taylor Goot, Charles Pizanis, Eileen Barrett Sep 2018

Facilitating A Resident-Run Journal Club: Fostering Autonomy Within A Time-Honored Tradition, Taylor Goot, Charles Pizanis, Eileen Barrett

HSC Education Days

Journal club is a time club is a time-honored tradition in medicine, and participation can increase knowledge and critical appraisal skills in trainees. Given the rapid pace at which medical knowledge changes, journal club can also help physicians keep abreast of current innovations. Best practices have been proposed for journal club, although UNM medical educators report variable attendance and engagement at journal club, and UNM trainees report varying relevance of journal club. Additionally, semi-structured peer interactions can decrease professional isolation and burnout.

Educational Methods Utilized In Teaching Prehospital Providers To Use Ultrasound – A Review Of The Literature, Benjamin Monge, Anna Baillie, Jenna White

HSC Education Days

While point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is being taught to emergency medical services (EMS) providers and is being utilized in the prehospital environment, a clear educational standard has not been established for this group. We conducted a review of the literature pertaining to prehospital ultrasound education in order to classify common educational themes and techniques, and to attempt to identify best practices in POCUS education for prehospital providers.
