El Niño & Lter Sites, David Greenland, Climate Committee
Long Term Ecological Research Network
An intense El Niño event can have severe impacts on the ecosystems of the west coast of South America. The upwelling of nutrient rich water off the coast is suppressed. Anchovy stocks dramatically decline, as do the seabird populations who live from them. The decline of the seabird populations negatively impacts the fertilizer industry which depends upon the guano produced by the birds. The fishing industry suffers from the lack of fish. Further impacts on terrestrial ecosystems of the region are noted below. It has long been recognized that during El Niño event effects are felt in other parts of …

An Application Of Gradient-Like Dynamics To Neural Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, James W. Howse, Gregory L. Heileman
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper reviews a formalism that enables the dynamics of a broad class of neural networks to be understood. This formalism is then applied to a specific network and the predicted and simulated behavior of the system are compared. The purpose of this work is to utilise a model of the dynamics that also describes the phase space behavior and structural stability of the system. This is achieved by writing the general equations of the neural network dynamics as a gradient-like system. In this paper it is demonstrated that a network with additive activation dynamics and Hebbian weight update dynamics …

Integration Of Scientific Information Management And Environmental Research, Susan G. Stafford, James W. Brunt, William K. Michener
Integration Of Scientific Information Management And Environmental Research, Susan G. Stafford, James W. Brunt, William K. Michener
Long Term Ecological Research Network
A new dynamic between science and technology is changing the management and analysis of environmental information. As a result of the expanding scope of environmental research, developers of environmental databases must now address difficult and diverse issues: the wide variety of data being considered for inclusion, the size and complexity of databases being collected; their design, development and utilization, the different scales of data collection; increasingly sophisticated analytical requirements; and the integration of data from various sources and disciplines. Increased attention to spatial variability, scale and the integration of basic and applied research to address societal issues has several implications …

Against Marriage, Steven K. Homer
Against Marriage, Steven K. Homer
Faculty Scholarship
What is marriage? In the debate surrounding same-sex marriage, the central term has gone undefined. Using the Hawaii Supreme Court's decision in Baehr v. Lewin as a starting point, this Note argues that marriage lacks legal as well as experiential coherence. A series of legal and social moves intended, on the one hand, to preserve the dominance of heterosexuality over gays and lesbians and, on the other, to allow, heterosexuals to escape the dominance of heterosexuality over themselves, has left little conceptual space for marriage. That is, to speak of "extending marriage" to same-sex couples creates the illusion that marriage …
