Reaction Norms For Age And Size At Maturity In Response To Temperature: A Puzzle For Life Historians., D. Berrigan, Eric Charnov

Ectotherms mature later at smaller size when growth rates are lowered by reductions in food quality but they mature later at larger sizes when growth rate is lowered by reductions in temperature. We argue that this general pattern has been neglected by life history theorists and suggest that an explanation for these strikingly different responses to two environmental cues might be found by considering correlations between the growth coefficient of the Bertalanffy equation and asymptotic size in a model for the evolution of age and size at maturity.

Special Publications
We provide in this report an annotated list of mammalian species known to occur in the vicinity of Santa Cruz de Ia Sierra in the department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. This area includes a high diversity of habitats and physical relief. Additionally, the recently activated Parque Nacional de Amboro lies within this region, and includes large tracts of primary subtropical forest. Thus far, 124 species of mammals are known to occur here. Much of this area remains unsampled and future biological research will be highly rewarding. Intensive efforts to further document distributions, collect specimens for systematic studies, and begin detailed …

Long Term Ecological Research Network
Stream research is currently being conducted at several sites in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network, although the primary focus of research at most sites is on terrestrial rather than aquatic ecosystems. To stimulate comparative stream research both inside and outside the Network, we have compiled this data catalog from responses to a questionnaire sent to all LTER sites. In this brief overview, I draw upon information from the following chapters to summarize the range of stream conditions found across the Network.
The extent of stream research conducted at an LTER site varies considerably across the Network as a consequence …
