Validation Of Improved Hardware And Software For Expired Gas Analysis Indirect Calorimetry, Doyeon Kim
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this investigation was to validate a new system of breath-by-breath expired gas analysis to both an artificial working model of lung ventilation and gas exchange as well as to the Douglas bag technique. In addition, comparisons will be made between expired fractions, ventilation, and computations of VO2, VCO2, and RER between the new system and a commercial mixing chamber system (ParvoMedics) for repeated measurements at rest, steady state and non-steady state cycle ergometry exercise. Post acquisition processing involved custom developed software (LabVIEW), where time to gas equilibration within the mixing bag was determined, as well as differences …
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell
Sociology ETDs
This research compared the effectiveness of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome prevention outreach in northwestern New Mexico, the Los Santos region of Panama, and Region Araucania IX in Chile. Outreach effectiveness for hantavirus is not well understood, even though outreach in Chile appears to be more extensive than in northwestern New Mexico and Panama. Understanding the role of human demographics, disease ecology, and subsequent human behavior in the disease process is critical to the examination of community responses in terms of behavior changes. Through the implementation of a self administered 28 question survey instrument (n=601), I measured attitudes towards, and across public …
Statistical Mechanics Of Transport In Disordered Lattices And Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Ziya Kalay
Statistical Mechanics Of Transport In Disordered Lattices And Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Ziya Kalay
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This thesis is the report of a study of several different problems in statistical physics. The first two are about random walks in a disordered lattice, with applications to a biological system, the third is about reaction-diffusion systems, particularly the phenomena of front propagation and pattern formation, and the last is about a special kind of evolving complex networks, the addition-deletion network. The motivation for the first of the two random walk investigations is provided by the diffusion of molecules in cell membranes. A mathematical model is constructed in order to predict molecular diffusion phenomena relating to the so-called compartmentalized …

Supporting The Use Of Mbd-1 Knockout Mice As An Animal Model For Autism, Laura Heise, Andrea Allan
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of autism in our society has grown over the past few decades while lack of a central pathophysiological cause for the disease has hindered research and design of an animal model with the disease. Methyl CpG Binding Domain-1 knockout mice are a potential model for autism. The mice are owned soley by Dr. Xinyu Zhao of the University of New Mexico. The mice appear normal, both anatomically and developmentally, however, they exhibit behaviors that are often seen in autistic patients. While there are few specific physiological hallmarks of autism among patients, a few studies have noted increased …

Correlation Of Clinical Symptoms With Temporal And Frontoparietal Lobe Response During An Auditory 'Odball' Task Of Chronic And First Episode Schizophrenia Patients (N=190), Michael Benavidez, Michelle Juarez, Vincent Clark, B Ho, G Kuperberg, T White, Vince Calhoun
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
The disorder of schizophrenia is defined by the presence of positive and negative clinical symptoms. One of the hallmark positive symptoms is the presence of auditory hallucinations which have previously been studied to involve bilateral temporal lobe anamolies. Our study seeks to further define and potentially quantify these anamolies in temporal lobe response by looking at the correlation of clinical symptoms with temporal lobe activation. To accomplish this task we have subjected 22 first episode and 64 chronic patients along with 104 matched healthy controls to a functional MRI scan while undergoing an auditory oddball' task. Analysis of this data …

Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas
Research Papers
In this text I analyze the role criminal law has played in the production of subaltern subjectivities in Colombia. Criminal law and criminological discourse have been important to control subaltern groups and to constitute their identities. Colombian elites have appealed to criminal law to solve their social problems, in a strategy that has been labeled as laws symbolic efficiency or as 'penal efficienticism'.'

Heterogeneity Effects On Flow And Transport Within A Shallow Fluvial Aquifer, Nicholas Engdahl
Heterogeneity Effects On Flow And Transport Within A Shallow Fluvial Aquifer, Nicholas Engdahl
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The effects of aquifer heterogeneity on flow and transport are considered numerically at two scales using high resolution groundwater models. Heterogeneity effects on river loss were evaluated at the kilometer scale using stochastic, geostatistical models with grid cells on the order of several meters. It was found that river loss decreased directly with an increase in the extent of heterogeneity and that homogeneous approximations resulted in increased loss estimates. Heterogeneity effects on transport were simulated at the scale of several meters using a homogeneous approximation, traditional geostatistical models and a new integrated method of aquifer characterization. The integrated method combines …

The Wrong Wright Stuff : Mapping Human Error In Aviation, Stacey Hendrickson
The Wrong Wright Stuff : Mapping Human Error In Aviation, Stacey Hendrickson
Psychology ETDs
The Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) was instituted to aid the Federal Aviation Administration in tracking trends in aviation incidents so that, ultimately, safety measures and training could be implemented to decrease the occurrence of accidents and incidents within the industry. The current system relies on hand coding of reports to recognize current trends and alert the proper parties. Although the filing party may enter some codified data describing the surrounding scenario (e.g., time of day, weather), there is no opportunity to specify a category if the problem is human error. Considering the prevalence of human error within these incidents …
Chimeras And Jagunços: Positivist Discourse In Euclides Da Cunha's Os Sertões, Justin Barber
Chimeras And Jagunços: Positivist Discourse In Euclides Da Cunha's Os Sertões, Justin Barber
History ETDs
The present study elucidates the discursive practice of positivism, as particularly manifested in late nineteenth-century Brazil. Founded in 1889, the Republic of the United States of Brazil was constructed as a positivist state by republican idealists and pragmatic oligarchs; the political embodiment of ordem e progresso (order and progress). It was a form of government meant to overcome Brazils imagined and concrete backwardness by strictly adhering to the Natural Laws identified by Auguste Comte, Charles Darwin, and, in particular, Herbert Spencer. Positivist progress was, however, contingent upon the elimination of the pathological, amorphous 'savage lower races. Non-white degeneration in Brazil, …
The 'Uncanny' And The Android, Noah Cooperstein
The 'Uncanny' And The Android, Noah Cooperstein
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The character of the android is found widely in film and literature. While she appears across the entire spectrum of genres, she most often makes her appearance in the uncanny text. This appearance is nearly always accompanied by some variation of the vision motif. Despite wide spread interest in both the Uncanny' and the android, to date, there is not a theory which accounts for the uncanny nature of the android and the prevalence of the vision motif in the android text. This paper will attempt to develop just such a theory. Any paper that addresses the 'Uncanny' must begin …

"Sparks From Law's Anvil": The Evolution Controversies In New Mexico, 1925-2008, Peter Incaudo
History ETDs
After attaining statehood in 1912, New Mexico witnessed an influx of American people, culture and controversies. This thesis tracks the development of controversies over the theory of evolution in the public schools of the state of New Mexico during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. Beginning with the states reaction to the 1925 Scopes trial, I discuss the reasons that the evolution controversy remained largely muted in 1920s New Mexico. Next, I examine the brief, but unique, 1927 evolution controversy sparked by a rumor of legislation to mandate the teaching of evolution. From there, I describe New Mexico's …

A Comparison Of Dental Practitioners' Knowledge Of The Adverse Oral Effects Of Pharmaceuticals; Specifically, Low-Dose Methotrexate, Diltiazem, Cyclosporine, Istretinoin, And Lisinopril, Melissa Van Witzenburg
Dental Hygiene ETDs
There are more than 15, 000 approved prescription and over-the-counter drugs, diagnostics, and intravenous supplementation products in the United States. Due to the increased number of patients using medications it is important that dental providers are aware of common adverse oral complications. The most commonly seen adverse oral effects of medications are xerostomia, gingival hypertrophy, angular cheilitis, and mucositis. The purpose of this study was to examine dental providers, subjects' knowledge of adverse oral effects of low-dose methotrexate, diltiazem, cyclosporine, isotretinoin, and lisinopril. Four of the five hypotheses tested demonstrated high P-values, therefore; they were consistent with the null hypothesis. …
Synthesis, Characterization And Fluorescence Performance Of Laf3:Ce3+ Nanocrystals, Fan Yang
Synthesis, Characterization And Fluorescence Performance Of Laf3:Ce3+ Nanocrystals, Fan Yang
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Fluorescent labeling agents have greatly affected many biological applications in recent years. Among different types of labeling agents, Cerium-doped LaF3 nanocrystals (NCs) are considered to be a promising new class of luminescent materials. Usually, lanthanide-doped nanocrystals production entails the use of ligands and high-temperature, which limits their biological applications and lowers their processability. This thesis proposes a simple and affordable synthesis of water-soluble LaF3: Ce doped nanocrystals without using ligands and at low temperatures. Dispersion of the nanoparticles was carried out in three different solvents including methanol, distilled-water and DI-chitosan. The effects of different levels of dopant on the particle …
Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson
Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson
Linguistics ETDs
Nearly all such studies have sought to understand the linguistic constraints of spoken languages, while largely neglecting signed languages. Despite the fact that spoken languages can be classified into types, signed languages are generally assumed to be clustered all together in one type which the current study challenges. Exploring the potential for a varied typology among signed languages requires identifying patterns across a sampling of geographically distinct and historically unrelated signed languages to formulate linguistic generalizations. To that end this study adopts Greenbergs 1966 analysis of Universals of Kinship Terminology, it examines the linguistic patterns that emerge from a comparison …

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner
Anthropology ETDs
This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …
Environmental Regulation Of Carbon Isotope Discrimination And Internal Co2 Conductance In C3 Leaves, Christopher Paul Bickford
Environmental Regulation Of Carbon Isotope Discrimination And Internal Co2 Conductance In C3 Leaves, Christopher Paul Bickford
Biology ETDs
Stable carbon isotopes are powerful tools for elucidating leaf- and ecosystem- level processes, and recent technological developments provide new opportunities to assess the isotopic flux during leaf gas exchange. In these studies I used a tunable diode laser spectroscope coupled to a infra-red gas analyzer to measure the isotopic composition of leaf gas exchange at high frequency in both field and greenhouse settings and assess environmental regulation of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) and internal conductance of CO2 to sites of carboxylation (gi). I measured Δ and gi across diurnal and seasonal periods in field-grown Juniperus monosperma trees and used these …

Description Of Thermonectus Nigrofasciatus And Rhantus Binotatus (Coleoptera:-Dytiscidae) Mating Behavior, Lauren M. Cleavall
Biology ETDs
Models of sexual conflict predict that diving beetles should respond morphologically and behaviorally during mating events to overcome the opposing sex. Morphological and behavioral adaptations may result from pressures by one sex to overcome resistance to mating attempts of the opposite sex. Morphological data supports an evolutionary arms race in diving beetles (Dytiscidae) exhibited in a series of adaptations attributable to sexual conflict between males and females. Males of certain Dytiscinae have sucker shaped adhesion setae on their front and mid tarsi to improve attachment to the females elytra prior to and during mating, whereas females have evolved grooves, ridges, …

Transient De-Coupling Of Photosynthesis And Stomatal Conductance In Response To Leaf Primary Vein Cut In Helianthus Annuus, Laura Elizabeth Green
Biology ETDs
Control of stomatal aperture is the primary way plants regulate gas exchange in the short-term, but what triggers stomatal responses to water stress is still debated. Chlorophyll-a fluorescence imaging, local leaf temperature, and gas exchange were measured simultaneously following a cut to primary leaf vein of Helianthus annuus to access the effect of local leaf xylem cavitation on leaf function. The treatment was repeated under 3 different vapor pressure deficit (VPD) conditions. Surprisingly, photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) responded inversely immediately following the treatment, indicating that A was not CO2 limited by stomatal closure. Comparisons of fluorescence images and …
