Developing Kham: An Inquiry Into The Use Of Environmental And Economic History For Development Policy In Tibetan Regions, Jared Phillips
Developing Kham: An Inquiry Into The Use Of Environmental And Economic History For Development Policy In Tibetan Regions, Jared Phillips
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
Policymakers must learn from the past, not blindly imitate it in order to arrive at workable solutions for the country as a whole. With these considerations, taking place in part in small regions of the plateau already, economic development stands to move forward in an organic manner, accounting for the needs of the local ecology, the local people, and the burgeoning Chinese economy. If not, further development will most likely falter at best, and at worst it will present a rapidly growing China with seemingly insurmountable problems.

The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan
The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The 1952 military coup in Egypt constituted the beginning of a new era in Egypts history and pushed forward substantial societal, economic and political changes. These changes represent the fruits of the revolutionary regime's pro-modernization ideology. In their search for modernity, the Egyptian elite invested in cinema as well as other forms of media and tended to follow the models of western countries. The strong relation between the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and the US, as well as the dominance of the American movies shown Egypt compared to other foreign cinematic industries at that time, directed the Egyptian elite …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder-Associated Depression: Evidence For Reductions In The Levels Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In A Mouse Model, Kevin Caldwell, S. Sheema, Rodrigo D. Paz, Sabrina Samudio-Ruiz, Mary Laughlin, Nathan Spence, Michael Roehlk, Sara Alcon, Andrea Allan
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with an increased incidence of depressive disorders in patient populations. However, the mechanisms that link prenatal ethanol exposure and depression are unknown. Several recent studies have implicated reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the hippocampal formation and frontal cortex as important contributors to the etiology of depression. In the present studies, we sought to determine whether prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with behaviors modeling depression, as well as with reduced BDNF levels in the hippocampal formation and/or medial frontal cortex, in a mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Compared to control adult …

A New Implementation And Detailed Study Of Breakpoint Analysis, B.M.E. Moret, S. Wyman, D.A. Bader, T. Warnow, M. Yan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Phylogenies derived from gene order data may prove crucial in answering some fundamental open questions in biomolecular evolution. Yet very few techniques are available for such phylogenetic reconstructions. One method is breakpoint analysis, developed by Blanchette and Sankoff 2 for solving the breakpoint phylogeny.' Our earlier studies 5;6 confirmed the usefulness of this approach, but also found that BPAnalysis, the implementation developed by Sankoff and Blanchette, was too slow to use on all but very small datasets. We report here on a reimplementation of BPAnalysis using the principles of algorithmic engineering. Our faster (by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude) …

Physicians and scientists must join together and research the specific effects of environmental carcinogens in relation to cancer. A great model to study environmental carcinogenesis is carcinogen-induced lung cancer. We know that 30% of cancer deaths are accredited to lung cancer and that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, other forms of cancer, and cancer deaths worldwide (1). Second hand smoke is also a very serious health concern. Second hand smoke has been chosen as a cancer-causing agent by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer …

Assessment Of The Reliability Of The Diagnosis Of Chagas Disease By Indigenous Promotores Of The Amazon Basin In Ecuador, Summer Nguyen
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, is the most important vector-borne disease in Latin America. It is estimated that 16 to 18 million people are infected with Chagas disease and some 50,000 people die each year. In endemic countries, people living in rural areas are at greatest risk for acquiring infection. Ecuador is one of these countries, and it is estimated that between 2.4-3.8 million people in Ecuador are exposed to Chagas disease, primarily in the Eastern endemic coastal region. The indigenous people of the Amazon region in Ecuador have historically been protected from Chagas disease due …
Tapping In Time: Visual And Auditory Selective Attention In Schizophrenia, Irene Patniyot
Tapping In Time: Visual And Auditory Selective Attention In Schizophrenia, Irene Patniyot
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Attention is a complex construct involving extensive interactions with working memory and executive control systems to process and extract meaning out of large amounts of multi-sensory information. Disruption of attention is a characteristic symptom in schizophrenia, and further studies on selective attention are crucial for understanding the disease. The current study looks at how subjects with schizophrenia selectively attend to either a visual or auditory metronome in the presence of asynchronous cross-modal distractors of 3 different frequencies (0.5, 1, and 2 Hz). Results showed that across all tasks of selective attention, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated increased variability in mean group …
Development Of A Potential Vaccine For Asthma Using Ige And Virus Like Particles, Fernando Monreal, Bryce Chackerian
Development Of A Potential Vaccine For Asthma Using Ige And Virus Like Particles, Fernando Monreal, Bryce Chackerian
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Highly dense, repetitive antigens such as virus particles induce strong immune responses. Correspondingly, Virus Like Particles (VLPs), which consist of the viral structural proteins, can be used as molecular scaffolds to increase the antigenicity of normally poorly immunogenic antigens. This ability to elicit strong antibody responses is not limited to foreign antigens, but also to self-antigens, which are normally subject to B-cell tolerance. The intention of this proposal is to develop a system for rapid identification of asthma vaccine candidates based on potent immunogenicity of antigens (IgE) displayed in dense repetitive arrays on virus-like particles. The technology is based on …

An Aqueous Geochemical And Hydrologic Study Of The Springs And Wells Of The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge : Evaluating Hydrochemical Pathways, Amy Williams
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Rio Grande is a regionally important water source, but the smaller rift springs are also a vital resource for livestock and wildlife. Several springs are located on rift-bounding faults and exhibit a mixing of larger volume meteoric recharge with small volume, chemically potent "endogenic" fluids. It has been hypothesized that deep-seated faults within the rift provide conduits for the ascent of deeply derived fluids, possibly from the lithospheric/asthenospheric mantle, while others have proposed that upwelling sedimentary basin brines at interbasin constrictions represent a significant salinity input to the modern Rio Grande. This study (a) provides the first hydrochemical data …

Characterization Of Dissolved Organic Matter By Separation And Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Yurong Deng
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The goal of this work is to evaluate new methods of extracting and fractionating dissolved organic matter (DOM) using liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction (SPE), monitored by optical spectroscopy. DOM in aquatic systems from different sources was characterized by three-dimension excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3DEEMS) and UV absorbance spectroscopy. UV and visible humic-like fluorescence were observed in all water samples -- humic acids (HA), fulvic acids (FA), river water, wastewater, and their fractionations. Their fluorescence centers varied with environment in the range of λex/ λem = 220-250 nm/390-460 nm for UV humic-like fluorescence (peak A) and λex/ λem = 300-340 nm/390-460 …
Indigenous Andean Women In Colonial Textual Discourses, Sara Guengerich
Indigenous Andean Women In Colonial Textual Discourses, Sara Guengerich
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This dissertation combines historical and literary analysis to challenge a history of literary studies that reads colonial texts as reflecting a real historical domination of indigenous Andean women in a patriarchal society. Through a comparative examination of colonial chronicles and archival documents, I reconsider the portrayal of these women as having played the role of victims from the very beginning of colonial relations through the seventeenth century. Through these sources, I unveil these womens discursive agency that was expressed in archival documents, only to be suppressed in colonial chronicles and contemporary literary criticism.
Applications Of Statistical Mechanics And Nonlinear Science To Ecological Phenomena, Luis Felipe Gonzalez-Palacio
Applications Of Statistical Mechanics And Nonlinear Science To Ecological Phenomena, Luis Felipe Gonzalez-Palacio
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
The application of techniques widely used in physics to explain biological phenomena has become a very successful endeavor in the past few decades. Such techniques include, but are not limited to, kinetic equations and nonlinear dynamics. We present an overview of some current topics of interest in ecology that use such techniques to explain and predict a wide array of phenomena. Several successful models are reviewed. We present the results of our analyses of two datasets of repeated sessions of mark-recaptures of the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus (Rodentia: Muridae), the host and reservoir of Sin Nombre virus (Bunyaviridae: Hantavirus). The …
Dissecting Disgust : An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Three Domain Disgust Scale, Joshua Tybur
Dissecting Disgust : An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Three Domain Disgust Scale, Joshua Tybur
Psychology ETDs
Research on the emotion disgust, and particularly individual differences in disgust sensitivity, has exploded in the past 15 years. However, most of this research has been based on outdated theory and poorly designed instruments. Tybur et al., (2009) suggested that past theoretical perspectives on disgust should best be updated in light of an evolutionary perspective, and measurement of disgust sensitivity should be developed based on an evolutionarily informed theory. After suggesting that disgust should be categorized along domains related to pathogens, sexuality, and morality, they introduced the Three Domain Disgust Scale, a new measure of individual differences in disgust sensitivity. …
Positional Accuracy Of The Wide Area Augmentation System, Lisa L. Arnold
Positional Accuracy Of The Wide Area Augmentation System, Lisa L. Arnold
Geography ETDs
Global Positioning Systems devices are increasingly being used for data collection in many fields. Consumer-grade GPS units without differential correction have a published horizontal accuracy of approximately 10 to 15 meters (average error). An attractive option for differential correction for these GPS units is the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). Most consumer-grade GPS units on the market are WAAS capable. According to the FAA, the WAAS broadcast message provides integrity information about the GPS signal as well as accuracy improvements which are reported to improve accuracy to 3 to 5 meters. However, limited empirical evidence has been published on the …

With the onset of globalization, the Korean government has emphasized English education as a key issue for Korea to succeed in the global economy. The Korean public education system has faced dramatic shifts in English education; for example, English introduction at an early age. Koreans feel considerable social pressure to acquire English proficiency. This pressure has encouraged parents to send their children to English speaking countries in order for them to learn English. This study examines three Korean students who came to the U.S. with the purpose of studying English. The research questions were: how do Korean students experience English …
The Development Of Nanofluidic Platforms For Biomolecular Separations, Anthony Garcia
The Development Of Nanofluidic Platforms For Biomolecular Separations, Anthony Garcia
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Recently the extrication and purification of important biomolecules, especially proteins, has been a topic of great interest. Common systems used in the purification and extraction of these important biological molecules includes gel electrophoresis, various forms of chromatography, and capillary electrophoresis type devices. These systems, while achieving a good amount of success, each possess inherent properties that can be improved upon. They usually necessitate comparatively large laboratory footprints, require high voltages to operate (in the tens of kilovolts), and call for relatively large sample sizes in order to perform these tasks. All of these shortcomings can be addressed by performing these …
