Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda Feb 2010

Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Identidad and Mejicanidad examines cultural identity and dance through the lens of 'owners,' 'borrowers,' and 'renters'. I examine how non-professional participants of these dance forms are beacons for cultural expression and serve to explore the fringe of the sense of cultural knowing through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, and Flamenco dance. Through these dance forms I interrogate how cultural identity frames questions of authenticity and identity. Ownership of cultural identity and issues of authenticity are a source of ire for many underrepresented groups of people. Maintaining who is 'in control' of a cultural expressions' evolution is a common dispute. The legacy of …

Maintaining Pathogens With Short Infectivity In Seasonally Structured Tick Populations: Relative Importance Of Three Transmission Pathways, Etsuko Nonaka Feb 2010

Maintaining Pathogens With Short Infectivity In Seasonally Structured Tick Populations: Relative Importance Of Three Transmission Pathways, Etsuko Nonaka

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Infectivity periods of different tick-borne pathogens in host species can vary widely, and the variation affects how the pathogens are maintained in tick populations. In addition to systemic and vertical transmission, cofeeding transmission has been proposed as an important route for the persistence of pathogens with short infectivity (e.g., tick-borne encephalitis causing viruses, TBEv). Because cofeeding transmission requires ticks to feed simultaneously, the temporal dynamics of tick populations become important. Existing models of tick-borne diseases do not fully incorporate all three transmission pathways (systemic, vertical, and cofeeding transmission) and tick seasonality. We developed a comprehensive stage-structured population model that includes …

Constraint Induced Movement Therapy : A Longitudinal Case Study, Sarah Renee Mcmillan

Occupational Therapy ETDs

Purpose. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) involves use of a constraint on the non-affected extremity and intensive therapy comprised of shaping and repetition during functional activities to improve quality and quantity of use of the affected extremity. The literature has shown that CIMT is effective and two articles support the use of 2 doses of CIMT. The current study investigated if 3 doses of CIMT over 5 years continued to produce improvements in functional use for a boy with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Methods. One child, with spastic hemiplegic CP, met inclusion criteria of a minimum of 20° of active wrist …

Biogeomorphology And Soil Geomorphology Of Small Semiarid Basins, Northeastern Arizona : Influences Of Topoclimate And Climate Variations, Leah M. Roberts Feb 2010

Biogeomorphology And Soil Geomorphology Of Small Semiarid Basins, Northeastern Arizona : Influences Of Topoclimate And Climate Variations, Leah M. Roberts

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

In northeastern Arizona, on the Colorado Plateau, landscapes associated with weakly cemented sandstones are sensitive to Holocene climate changes on millennial to decadal scales. It is hypothesized that these climate changes affect processes of weathering, erosion and plant community establishment on hillslopes in this semiarid environment. In small basins formed at the base of Black Mesa escarpment west of Chinle, Arizona, Jurassic sandstones cemented mainly by clay minerals weather by hydration, favoring relatively high erodibility. Two end member slope forms related to aspect-induced topoclimates are present in this area: (1) transport-limited slopes mantled by 10-20 cm of weathered materials and …

Stable Isotope Sourcing Using Sampling, Erik Erhardt Feb 2010

Stable Isotope Sourcing Using Sampling, Erik Erhardt

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Stable isotope sourcing is used to estimate proportional contributions of sources to a mixture, such as in the analysis of animal diets, plant nutrient use, geochemistry, pollution, and forensics. We focus on animal ecology because of the particular complexities due to the process of digestion and assimilation. Parameter estimation has been a challenge because there are often many sources and few isotopes leading to an underconstrained linear system for the diet probability vector. This dissertation offers three primary contributions to the mixing model community. (1) We detail and provide an R implementation of a better algorithm (SISUS) for representing possible …

A Feminist Approach To Understanding Esl Identity Development: A Case Study Of Korean Women In U.S. Universities, Seonsook Park

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Current literature and approaches to identity construction within L2 contexts often fail or underemphasize the important roles that strategic identity and discursive-place identity play in second language acquisition processes. This study explores how education, English discourse, and American cultures affect the identities of three female Korean graduate students in American institutions. The theoretical approach of this project integrated elements from sociocultural theory and feminist research methodology. The participants narratives, collected via interviews and email exchanges over a period of a year, have revealed that when these ESL students moved from their native country, Korea, to America, they were not only …

Bioagent Defeat In Shock Driven Gas Flow, Mario L. Chavez Feb 2010

Bioagent Defeat In Shock Driven Gas Flow, Mario L. Chavez

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The problem of planar shock interaction with gas cylinders whose axis of symmetry is parallel to the plane of the shock has been well studied both experimentally and numerically, and in this case, the flow evolution driven by Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is well characterized (although, as this thesis shows, assumptions commonly made about the experimental conditions need to be carefully checked). However, for a similar oblique interaction, with the plane of the shock and the axis of the density interface being non-parallel, presently only numerical results exist. The problem of oblique shock interaction is quite interesting to study experimentally both because …

Development Of Novel Synthetic Methodologies And Their Use In Approaches For The Preparation Of Lactacystin, Lepadiformine And A Giardia Lamblia Fructose-1,6-Bisphosphate Aldolase Inhibitor, Jiwen Zou

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The investigations carried out in my doctoral studies focus on (1) applications of pyridinium salt photochemical and tandem ene-yne-ene metathesis reactions to the synthesis of the natural products (+)-lactacystin and lepadiformine C, and (2) the preparation of a novel inhibitor for the class II Giardia lamblia fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase. New developments in the area of pyridinium salt photochemistry were explored in the context of approaches to the natural product (+)-lactacystin. The results of this effort show that irradiation of a substituted 1,2-cyclopenta-fused pyridinium salt in aqueous solution followed by treatment with sodium bicarbonate leads to selective production of an unusual, structural …

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A novel set of lanthanide (Ln) alkoxycarbonates, [Ln(μ-CO2-DBP)(DBP)2]2 where Ln = lanthanide; and DBP = OC6H3-2,6-C(CH3)3, were isolated from a systematic study of the insertion of CO2(g) (referred to as CO2) into the Ln-O bonds of a series of new lanthanide alkoxides, Ln(OR)3. This study was undertaken to determine if the deleterious metal carbonate [M(CO3)y] formation that promotes higher thermal budgets during processing could be avoided. While processing controls can reduce the formation of the M(CO3) …

Temporal Biomass Density And Filamentous Bacteria Effects On Secondary Settling, Patricia A. Jones Feb 2010

Temporal Biomass Density And Filamentous Bacteria Effects On Secondary Settling, Patricia A. Jones

Civil Engineering ETDs

The activated sludge wastewater treatment process is the most common technology used today and solids separation is a critical and often problematic component of this technology. This leads to requirements for larger clarifiers, increased pumping costs of the diluted settled solids stream, and increased costs for solids treatment. For the past thirty years, the majority of the research in secondary settling problems has focused on the role of filamentous bacteria, and also factors such as floc size and shape. The effects of variable biomass density on settleability of biosolids produced in full scale activated sludge wastewater treatment systems has been …

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

This research focused on developing and characterizing rare-earth doped, solid-state materials for laser cooling. In particular, the work targeted the optimization of the laser-cooling efficiency in Yb3+ and Tm3+ doped fluorides. The first instance of laser-induced cooling in a Tm3+-doped crystal, BaY2F8 was reported. Cooling by 3 degrees Kelvin below ambient temperature was obtained in a single-pass pump geometry at λ = 1855 nm. Protocols were developed for materials synthesis and purification which can be applied to each component of ZBLANI:Yb3+/Tm3+ (ZrF4 — BaF2 — LaF3 — AlF3 — NaF — InF3: YbF3/TmF3) glass to enable a material with significantly …

Nonlinear Microscopy For Material Characterization, Reed Alan Weber Feb 2010

Nonlinear Microscopy For Material Characterization, Reed Alan Weber

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Making use of femtosecond laser sources, nonlinear microscopy exhibits inherent 3- dimensional optical sectioning and provides access to previously unstudied aspects of materials. By probing third order nonlinear optical signals determined by the nonlinear susceptibility (chi-3), which is present in all materials, we gain insight not available by conventional linear or electron microscopy. Third-harmonic generation (THG) and four-wave mixing (FWM) microscopy are used to investigate fundamental material parameters. THG microscopy is applied to supplement damage studies of optical coatings by imaging laser induced material modification both above and below damage threshold conditions in HfO2 thin-films. FWM microscopy is employed to …

White Bodies, Black Gaze: Constructions Of White Masculinity In White-Male Elite Discourses On Leadership And Diversity, Christopher Brown Feb 2010

White Bodies, Black Gaze: Constructions Of White Masculinity In White-Male Elite Discourses On Leadership And Diversity, Christopher Brown

Communication ETDs

This study examines white-male elite understandings of diversity and leadership to consider possibilities for exploring articulations of white masculinity. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with white-male leaders in their organizations who by virtue of their race, gender, class, and education, exercise much power and control in their organization. I used grounded theory methodology to highlight the communication strategies that white-male elites employed when talking about leadership and diversity. Techniques in grounded theory methodology yielded concepts, descriptors, and semantic moves that were articulated to intersecting discourses of race, gender, and sexuality. Through the intersectional matrix, I posited that multiple functions of …
