Citizenship, Religion And Revolution In Cuba, Carolyn Watson
Citizenship, Religion And Revolution In Cuba, Carolyn Watson
History ETDs
Throughout the twentieth century, various Cuban regimes have tried to eliminate the practice of religions of African origin by combining repressive legislation and coercive social practices that stigmatized practitioners as culturally backward, socially deviant, and mentally deficient. Religious practitioners, however, used the state apparatus to continue worshipping their African deities, sometimes challenging government officials excessive application of the law or devising ways to evade their scrutiny. Through an analysis of archival documents, newspapers, works produced by practitioners, oral history interviews and published ethnographies, this dissertation examines the strategies practitioners of Ocha-Ifa — also known as Santeria — employed as they …
Distributed, Adaptive Deployment For Nonholonomic Mobile Sensor Networks : Theory And Experiments, Jose Marcio Luna-Castaneda
Distributed, Adaptive Deployment For Nonholonomic Mobile Sensor Networks : Theory And Experiments, Jose Marcio Luna-Castaneda
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
In this work we show the Lyapunov stability and convergence of an adaptive and decentralized coverage control for a team of mobile sensors. This new approach assumes nonholonomic sensors rather than the usual holonomic sensors found in the literature. The kinematics of the unicycle model and a nonlinear control law in polar coordinates are used in order to prove the stability of the controller applied over a team of mobile sensors. This controller is adaptive, which means that the mobile sensors are able to estimate and map a density function in the sampling space without a previous knowledge of the …
Information Similarity Metrics In Information Security And Forensics, Tu-Thach Quach
Information Similarity Metrics In Information Security And Forensics, Tu-Thach Quach
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
We study two information similarity measures, relative entropy and the similarity metric, and methods for estimating them. Relative entropy can be readily estimated with existing algorithms based on compression. The similarity metric, based on algorithmic complexity, proves to be more difficult to estimate due to the fact that algorithmic complexity itself is not computable. We again turn to compression for estimating the similarity metric. Previous studies rely on the compression ratio as an indicator for choosing compressors to estimate the similarity metric. This assumption, however, is fundamentally flawed. We propose a new method to benchmark compressors for estimating the similarity …
Templated Growth Of Platinum Nanostructures, Robert Garcia
Templated Growth Of Platinum Nanostructures, Robert Garcia
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Novel platinum nanostructures were synthesized by templating the growth of platinum on treated polymer surfaces and within disk-like aqueous bicellar assemblies. The growth mechanisms of all structures were examined in detail. Platinum hollow nanospheres with uniform shell thickness were prepared by the seeded growth of platinum on the surface of latex beads with an adsorbed porphyrin photocatalyst followed by core removal. Templating bicelles of a high yield were synthesized for the first time and verified by electron microscopy. Dendritic platinum nanowheels were obtained as a result of confined growth within the bicellar interior. Sintering experiments revealed an unusual stability of …

Lter Cyber-Infrastructure Plan External Review, Long Term Ecological Research
Long Term Ecological Research Network
The Cyber-infrastructure/Networked Information System external advisory panel conducted a review of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Office (LNO) Network Information System (NIS) Operational Plan.
This summary conclusion is that the operational plan is sufficiently comprehensive, organizes the sixteen major project tasks coherently, and scopes the effort at a generally appropriate level of detail.

Ground Arthropod Community Survey In Grassland, Shrubland, And Woodland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004), David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
This data set contains records for the numbers of selected groups of ground-dwelling arthropod species and individuals collected from pitfall traps at 4 sites on the Sevilleta NWR, including creotostebush shrubland, both black and blue grama grasslands, and a pinyon/juniper woodland. Data collections begin in May of 1989, and are represented by subsequent sample collections every 2 months. One site (Goat Draw/Cerro Montosa) was discontinued in 2001, and a new site (Blue Grama) was initiated . Only three sites, creosotebush, black grama, and blue grama were continued between 2001-2004.

Effect Of Long-Term Nitrogen Fertilization On Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated With A Dominant Grass In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005), Andrea Porras-Alfaro, Robert Sinsabaugh, Don Natvig
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
We studied the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a semiarid grassland and the effect of long-term nitrogen (N) fertilization on this fungal community. Root samples of Bouteloua gracilis were collected at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (New Mexico, USA) from control and N-amended plots that have been fertilized since 1995. Small subunit rDNA was amplified using AMF specific primers NS31 and AM1. The diversity of AMF was low in comparison with other ecosystems, only seven operational taxonomic units (OTU) were found in B. gracilis and all belong to the genus Glomus. The dominant OTU was closely related to …

Ocotillo Plant Demography Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, 2003, Joanna Redfern, William Pockman, Tim Lowrey
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
In order to better understand the life history of Ocotillo, a re-sampling of Ocotillo plants originally marked and studied in 1991 was done in the southeast corner of the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. All plants measured in 1991 were re-censused and re-tagged with new numbers. Measurements of plant height and branch number were repeated along with measurements pertaining to overall plant size.

Long-Term Core Site Grasshopper Dynamics For The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2013), David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Grasshoppers are important animals in semi-arid environments, both as herbivores and as food resources for higher level consumer animals. Grasshoppers tend to be numerous and represented by many species in semi-arid environments, especially in desert grasslands. Grasshopper species range from environmental specialists, to environmental generalists. Grasshopper populations tend to change considerably from year to year, often in response to annual variation in rainfall and plant production. The purpose of this study was to monitor grasshopper species composition and abundance over a period of many years from black grama grassland, blue grama grassland, creosotebush shrubland, and pinyon/juniper woodland environments at the …

The study of environmental pollution by chemicals used in agriculture as pesticide or as fertilizers or pollution caused by industries and chemical plants which use chemicals have not been analysed systematically. This book has five chapters. First chapter is introductory in nature. Here we just study chemical pollution caused by garment industries in chapter two of this book using fuzzy associative memories. In chapter three we give ways to control pollution by improving the system performance using hierarchical genetic fuzzy control algorithm. This study is carried out using the past data reported by Shimada et al (1995). Health hazards suffered …

The fourth volume, in my book series of “Collected Papers”, includes 100 published and unpublished articles, notes, (preliminary) drafts containing just ideas to be further investigated, scientific souvenirs, scientific blogs, project proposals, small experiments, solved and unsolved problems and conjectures, updated or alternative versions of previous papers, short or long humanistic essays, letters to the editors - all collected in the previous three decades (1980-2010) – but most of them are from the last decade (2000-2010), some of them being lost and found, yet others are extended, diversified, improved versions. This is an eclectic tome of 800 pages with papers …
