Perinatal Arsenic Exposure Inhibits Binding Ability Of Glucocorticoid Receptors To Nuclear Response Elements Altering Gene Expression And Affecting Learning Behavior, Ebany J. Martinez-Finley
Perinatal Arsenic Exposure Inhibits Binding Ability Of Glucocorticoid Receptors To Nuclear Response Elements Altering Gene Expression And Affecting Learning Behavior, Ebany J. Martinez-Finley
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Learning deficits in children following arsenic (As) exposure via drinking water have been epidemiologically described in the last decade. Arsenic is a persistent environmental toxin and exposure has been shown to perturb the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) stress axis. The glucocorticoid receptors (GR) are an integral part of the HPA axis and are found throughout the central nervous system, particularly in the hippocampus, an area of the brain important in learning and memory. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway is involved in learning and two kinases of the MAPK pathway, Ras and Raf are transcriptionally regulated by GRs. In the studies detailed …
Regulation Of Cyclin E1 By The Breast Cancer Microenvironment, Yuehan Wu
Regulation Of Cyclin E1 By The Breast Cancer Microenvironment, Yuehan Wu
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The behavior of breast epithelial cells is influenced by their microenvironment, which includes stromal cells and extracellular matrix. During breast cancer progression, the tissue microenvironment fails to control proliferation, resulting in uncontrolled growth and invasion. Upon invasion, the extracellular matrix encountered by breast cancer cells changes from primarily laminin and collagen IV to primarily collagen I. The current study used a three-dimensional (3D) collagen I culture model to address how the microenvironment controls the breast cancer cell cycle after invasion through the basement membrane. We show that culturing breast cancer cells in 3D collagen I inhibits proliferation through direct regulation …

Algorithms For Self-Healing Networks, Amitabh Trehan
Computer Science ETDs
Many modern networks are reconfigurable, in the sense that the topology of the network can be changed by the nodes in the network. For example, peer-to-peer, wireless and ad-hoc networks are reconfigurable. More generally, many social networks, such as a company's organizational chart; infrastructure networks, such as an airline's transportation network; and biological networks, such as the human brain, are also reconfigurable. Modern reconfigurable networks have a complexity unprecedented in the history of engineering, resembling more a dynamic and evolving living animal rather than a structure of steel designed from a blueprint. Unfortunately, our mathematical and algorithmic tools have not …

The East Mountain Area Septic System User's Guide To The Bernalillo County Wastewater Ordinance : Ensuring Groundwater Sustainability, Michael E. Campana, Michele Minnis
Water Resources Field Methods Reports
On June 29, 2000, Bernalillo County released a draft wastewater ordinance, Bernalillo County Wastewater Ordinance, for public comment; in the fall of 2000, this ordinance was adopted. The ordinance is intended to protect public health and safety by establishing minimum criteria for the design, installation, inspection, treatment, and management of commercial and domestic wastewater systems. The ordinance is detailed and perhaps difficult to understand for the average homeowner in the East Mountain Area (EMA). It encompasses engineering, permitting, and maintenance requirements for new or modified septic systems in place after the effective date of this ordinance. Without thorough review and …

Water Resources Field Methods Reports
This course is the required capstone seminar for Master of Water Resources (MWR) graduate students in the Water Resources Program at the University of New Mexico. Drs. Michael E. Campana (hydrology), Paul Matthews (water law and policy), and David Brookshire (environmental economics) were the instructors. The class focused on three contemporary issues within the Rio Grande basin: 1) arsenic in the waters of the basin, including both the conflict between the City of Albuquerque and Isleta Pueblo over arsenic in the Rio Grande and the impending change in drinking water standards for arsenic; 2) the hydrologic impacts and fire management …
Surface Water Quality Of The Gallinas River In And Around Las Vegas, New Mexico, Ron Amato
Surface Water Quality Of The Gallinas River In And Around Las Vegas, New Mexico, Ron Amato
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Gallinas River in north central New Mexico is currently listed on the State 303(d) list of impaired waters for unknown toxicity, ammonia, and stream bottom deposits. Empirical evidence of these problems is manifested as periodic mortality of aquatic organisms and conspicuous amounts of algae. These listings will result in development of one or more Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) if the problems cannot be resolved. To date, research on this river has focused on physical, chemical and biological characterization of specific issues such as hydraulic conductivity and nutrient flux. These dynamics are the underpinnings of a complete understanding of …

Erosion Impacts From Recreation In The Enchanted Tower Climbing Area, New Mexico, Debby Mandeville
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
There is a threat to the health of watersheds beyond natural occurrences. This threat results from human recreational impacts. There are many ways in which watersheds can be managed and protected to better meet human needs for water, food, and other natural resources, including management of recreational activities, both today and tomorrow. In Thompson Canyon along Forest Road 59A, a rock climbing area has received national and international recognition. It is heavily used during all seasons. The National Forest Service writes, ""This use has had a negative impact on surrounding areas. There are several concerns regarding the Thompson Canyon Rock …

The Effects Of A Prescribed Burn On Streambed Sediments, Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, And Water Quality In The Valle Toledo, Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico, Jeanine K. Mcgann
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Lotic ecosystems of the southwestern U.S. can be severely affected by wildfires causing alterations in water chemistry, sedimentation from runoff events, and changes in macro invertebrate community structure. In these same systems, the use of prescribed burns as forest and/or grassland management tools also may cause changes. The severity of these changes in comparison to wildfires is of primary importance to the effectiveness of these management tools, as any degradation of aquatic habitats is of serious concern in a semi-arid region. This study evaluates the effects of a recent prescribed burn in the Valle Toledo section of the Valles Caldera …

Urbanization Of Seven Springs, New Mexico:An Evaluation Of Current And Projected Impacts On Ground- And Surface-Water Resources, William S. Mcdonald
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The village of Seven Springs, New Mexico, lies north of Fenton Lake in the valley of the Rio Cebolla in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. The valley is funnel shaped -- narrowest downstream -- with homes most densely packed at the bottom of the funnel. It is typical of many small communities scattered throughout the state in that residents rely on private wells for drinking water and on individual septic systems for disposal of household waste. The current population in the village and the valley is light -- about 50 permanent residents swelling to about 100 during the …

This report is a synthesis of the presentations and discussions featured at the Utton Transboundary Re-sources Center’s March 15, 2010 Environmental Flows Workshop at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Over 100 stakeholders, lawyers, scientists, and decision-makers gathered to develop a better understanding of how environmental flows are successfully implemented across the West and in New Mexico. They also began the process of evaluating the condition of New Mexico’s rivers and identifying opportunities to conserve and enhance their natural functions.
The goal of the Workshop was to inform a wide range of policy-makers, agency managers and stakeholders of …
