Ancestry Estimation In A Web-Based, Searchable Database Of Orthodontic Case Files For Patient Care, Education, And Research, Philip J. Kroth, Heather J.H. Edgar, Edward F. Harris, Summers Kalishman, Shamsi Daneshvari
Posters and Presentations
In 2005, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology accepted a donation of orthodontic patient records from an orthodontist who has been practicing in the Albuquerque area since the early 1970s. This collection represents a diversity of patients not often encountered in orthodontic training in the United States. A virtual, de-identified, web-based version of a subset of the collection is now being developed. Users can search for cases with particular characteristics of interest (e.g., patient ancestry, extraction patterns, diagnoses, and cephalometric parameters), then review sequential intra-oral and Xray images to observe treatment outcomes. An innovative feature of the database is that it …
Syntectonic Deposition And Paleohydrology Of The Spring-Fed Hualapai Limestone And Implications For 5-6 Ma Integration Of The Colorado River System Through Grand Canyon : Evidence From Sedimentology, Geochemistry And Detrital Zircon Analysis, Jessica Lopez Pearce
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Hualapai Limestone, at the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, provides the best sedimentary record available for 12 to 6 Ma at the mouth of the Grand Canyon. Because it directly underlies the first Colorado River gravels, this unit is a key element for understanding the integration of the Colorado River from the Colorado Plateau to the Basin and Range province, and the early paleogeography of the Grand Canyon region. This study combines a tectonic investigation with a stratigraphic and sedimentologic analysis that includes new geochemistry, tephrochronology, and detrital zircon analysis to examine variations of the sedimentary and tectonic …
Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler
Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler
Psychology ETDs
This study tested the relationship between short-term neuroplasticity and individual differences in intelligence. Twenty-two participants completed cognitive testing and a visual EEG experiment involving exposures to repeated and novel stimuli. Time-frequency analyses of phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced) power showed a small effect of decreasing evoked/induced theta (4-8 Hz) ratios over stimulus exposures, irrespective of condition. Hypotheses that intelligence would relate to an increase in this ratio over exposures were not supported. However, the magnitude of the ratio positively correlated with intelligence; while the amount of induced gamma (30-50Hz) activation pre- to post-stimulus was highly inversely related to g. Results …
Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap
Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap
Psychology ETDs
Research on offspring sex ratios and parental condition indicate that parents in better condition may benefit from biasing their offspring toward sons. While measures of phenotypic quality and offspring sex ratio have been examined in other animals, the current study was designed to look at this relationship within human families. I investigated the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and facial masculinity, both possible measures of phenotype, and offspring sex ratio within families. The results were mixed. The fluctuating asymmetry of one sibling covaried negatively with the overall offspring sex ratio within their family. The significant negative correlation between the two provides …
Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman
Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman
Psychology ETDs
The association between oxidative stress and quality of romantic relationships was investigated in a sample of 98 college males. Given a postulated life history trade-off between current and future reproductive potential, men currently in higher quality romantic relationships may expend less general mating effort (i.e., less energy allocation to finding, attracting, and competing for new mates) than single men or men in lesser quality relationships. Reduced mating effort may allow greater allocation of energy to anti-oxidant defense systems, and increased resistance to oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consistent with this prediction, men who reported being in higher quality …
Generalizations Of The Statistical Flowgraph Model Framework, Richard Warr
Generalizations Of The Statistical Flowgraph Model Framework, Richard Warr
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Statistical flowgraphs model multistate semi-Markov processes and provide a way to perform inference for these processes. This methodology provides powerful results that significantly impact the study of multistate semi-Markov processes. This dissertation extends previous work in several ways. First, by demonstrating how any "smooth" transition distribution can be incorporated into a statistical flowgraph model (SFGM), we provide a method to use popular distributions, such as the lognormal, that have not been used in the past. Next, we propose an alternate way to consider Bayesian SFGMs by showing how computation can be accomplished when the traditional methods of SFGMs fail to …
Nutrient Cycling In Impacted Stream Ecosystems: From Microbes To Watersheds, David James Van Horn
Nutrient Cycling In Impacted Stream Ecosystems: From Microbes To Watersheds, David James Van Horn
Biology ETDs
The conditions found in stream ecosystems are an integration of watershed characteristics and processes. Anthropogenic disturbances are part of this integration and include direct inputs to streams, alteration of riparian areas, and modification of catchment properties which affect material inputs. Impacts to discrete portions of terrestrial watersheds combine as water moves down gradient, transporting the byproducts of catchment disturbances to streams including, nutrients, organic materials, particulates, and toxins. This dissertation explores the effects of disturbance on nutrient cycling in stream ecosystems at three spatial scales: the patch scale includes localized processes and assemblages, the reach scale encompasses tens to hundreds …
Attitudes Of Undergraduate Students Towards Same-Sex Couples Adopting, Melissa Gaa
Attitudes Of Undergraduate Students Towards Same-Sex Couples Adopting, Melissa Gaa
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This quasi-experimental design study examines attitudes of 87 undergraduate students in a social science major, towards same-sex couples. The participants were given one of two vignettes describing a couple interested in adopting a 5-year-old child. The vignettes were identical except that the couples orientation was depicted as either a gay male couple or a heterosexual couple. Using t-tests and an ANOVA test for difference in attitude scores, emotional stability of the parents, quality of parenting, whether the participant felt the child would experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, and whether the parents would raise the child with morals and values, …
Life: Blood. Water. Seeds. Water. Oxygen., Zack Kear
Life: Blood. Water. Seeds. Water. Oxygen., Zack Kear
Music ETDs
Several basic biological needs must be satisfied for a Human to remain alive on this planet. Despite cultural differences, differences in belief systems and language barriers, four Human biological needs we have in common are: Blood, Water, Seeds and Oxygen. This work has three movements—Blood, Seeds and Oxygen—which are connected by two Water interludes. It is an acousmatic music composition meaning that it exists in recorded form and is designed for reception via loudspeakers only. The score, therefore, acts as a graphic illustration of the sonic contents rather than a set of instructions for live performers. The score for Blood, …
Sintering Of Metal Nanoparticles On Model Substrates, Levi R. Houk
Sintering Of Metal Nanoparticles On Model Substrates, Levi R. Houk
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The sintering of precious metal catalysts is an important problem for the automotive and chemical process industry. As these precious metal catalysts sinter, the metal nanoparticles grow, which in return causes a loss in the overall surface area from loss of the number of available reaction sites. At high temperatures, sintering as a thermally activated process occurs more rapidly and the energetics of the sample changes. In automotive catalysis, for the catalytic converter, the exhaust gases from automobiles contain carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide compounds, and other hydrogen compounds, which are detrimental to the atmosphere, and a catalyst is required to …
Field-Structured Chemiresistors : Tunable Sensors For Chemical-Switch Arrays, Douglas Read
Field-Structured Chemiresistors : Tunable Sensors For Chemical-Switch Arrays, Douglas Read
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
We have developed a significantly improved composite material for applications to chemiresistors, which are resistance-based sensors for volatile organic compounds. This material is a polymer composite containing Au-coated magnetic particles organized into electrically conducting pathways by magnetic fields. This improved material overcomes the various problems inherent to conventional carbon-black chemiresistors, while achieving an unprecedented magnitude of response. When exposed to chemical vapors, the polymer swells only slightly, yet this is amplified into large, reversible resistance changes—as much as 9 decades at a swelling of only 1.5 %. These conductor-insulator transitions occur over such a narrow range of analyte vapor concentration …
Does Clinical Distress Impact Attempts To Moderate In Problem Drinkers? : Analysis Of Outcomes From A Randomized Clinical Trial, William Campbell
Does Clinical Distress Impact Attempts To Moderate In Problem Drinkers? : Analysis Of Outcomes From A Randomized Clinical Trial, William Campbell
Psychology ETDs
This study examined the relationship between participants level of psychological distress and their attempts to control their problematic alcohol consumption in a randomized clinical trial comparing two web-based Behavioral Self-Control Training (BSCT) interventions. Potential participants in the trial were screened for both severe mental illness and symptoms of alcohol dependence. Based on prevailing theories, as well as research on individuals diagnosed with co-morbid anxious or mood disorders with alcohol use disorders, it was hypothesized that participants reporting higher levels of clinical distress would have worse outcomes. However, the results of this trial demonstrated that participants reporting higher levels of clinical …

This study evaluated possible sex differences in intracellular heat shock protein 72 (Hsp72), intracellular cytokines, and extracellular Hsp72 (eHsp72) before and after exercise in the heat. Nine non-heat acclimated women (W) (age 23 ± 3, BF 21 ± 2%, VO2max 58 ± 5 ml/kgFFM/min) and nine non-heat acclimated men (M) (age 25 ± 5, BF 12 ± 5%, VO2max 60 ± 7 ml/kgFFM/min) completed 2 treadmill bouts at 60% VO2max for 60 min in a 42°C, 20% RH environment. The W had normal menstrual cycles and were tested in counterbalanced order during follicular (fol) and luteal (lut) phases. M and …
Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen
Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Thermotolerance (cellular adaptations that allow survival after an acute, severe heat exposure) and heat acclimation (systemic adaptations that improve heat dissipation following chronic heat exposure) have traditionally been considered separate phenomena. However, recent studies in animals suggest these adaptations may be related through the heat shock response. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of a standard laboratory heat shock response-inhibitor (QUERCETIN) on established markers of thermotolerance [gastrointestinal barrier permeability, plasma TNF-a, Il-6, and Il-10 concentrations; leukocyte HSP70 content(HSP70)] and heat acclimation [reduced body temperatures, heart rate, and physiologic strain in response to exercise/heat stress] in male subjects (n=8) completing a 7-day …
Do Social Isolation And Depression Affect Rates Of Hospital Readmission For Patients With Heart Failure?, Irma Samaniego
Do Social Isolation And Depression Affect Rates Of Hospital Readmission For Patients With Heart Failure?, Irma Samaniego
Nursing ETDs
Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome that primarily affects the aged and is the most common hospital discharge diagnosis for adults in the United States. Readmission is common following discharge from an acute hospital stay for HF. Patients with HF suffer more depressive morbidity than other patients with cardiovascular disease, and many age 65 or older experience social isolation. This prospective exploratory study examined whether readmission within 30 to 60 days of discharge from an index hospitalization for HF was associated with depressive symptoms or social isolation. A convenience sample of 101 patients participated during an index hospitalization for HF. …
Remote Sensing Assessment Of Rapidly Changing Lake Areas In Semi-Arid Closed Basins : Modern Playa Lake Response To Meteorological Variability And Implications For Pluvial Lake Palomas Holocene Highstands, Christine K. Laudadio
Remote Sensing Assessment Of Rapidly Changing Lake Areas In Semi-Arid Closed Basins : Modern Playa Lake Response To Meteorological Variability And Implications For Pluvial Lake Palomas Holocene Highstands, Christine K. Laudadio
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Closed basin lakes provide important data on paleo- and modern environmental conditions because of their sensitivity to climate variability, particularly variations in precipitation. In arid and semi-arid regions throughout the world, playas play an important role in biological communities, agriculture, and as a major dust source when they are dry. The ability to monitor these lakes at a high temporal resolution is critical to understanding their response to climate variability as well as improving our interpretation of their paleoenvironmental record, yet such monitoring is currently conducted on few playas. There are several challenges to effectively monitoring playa systems, but the …
Model Electrode Structures For Studies Of Electrocatalyst Degradation, Ronald Goeke
Model Electrode Structures For Studies Of Electrocatalyst Degradation, Ronald Goeke
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are being extensively studied as power sources because of their technological advantages such as high energy efficiency, high energy and power densities, environmental friendliness, low noise, rapid refueling, and fuel flexibility. The most effective catalyst in these systems consists of nanoparticles of Pt or Pt-based alloys on carbon supports. Understanding the role of the nanoparticle size and structure on the catalytic activity and degradation is needed to optimize the fuel cell performance and reduce the noble metal loading. Electrocatalyst degradation is believed to occur by four mechanisms; particle sintering (Ostwald ripening and migration and …
Physical And Legal Aspects Of River Rehabilitation; Middle Rio Grande, New Mexico, April Fitzner
Physical And Legal Aspects Of River Rehabilitation; Middle Rio Grande, New Mexico, April Fitzner
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The current ecosystem of the middle Rio Grande is being looked at by scientists and environmentalists as a river that needs healing. Declining populations of native flora and fauna have forced public agencies to evaluate the ecosystem, which has led to opportunities to rehabilitate portions of the river in an attempt to create a healthier ecosystem. Through time, ecological changes have occurred along the river corridor due to social presence, structural changes on the river, climate and river morphology. A historical review is necessary to understand the riverine rehabilitation efforts that are being proposed today. The environmental degradation brought on …
Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter
Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Active intervention of humans in pristine water resource environments has caused both surface and ground waters to degrade in quality and natural purification capacity (Geldreich 1996). Groundwater is often considered to be less impacted than that of surface water due to the absence of climate changes and storm water migrations (Geldreich 1996). Shallow karstic limestone areas (less than 30 m deep) have a greater change of surface contamination since surface water runoff can rapidly percolate through areas lacking a protective bedrock layer.
Une Étude Foucaldienne De La « Femme Exotique » Comme Figure Pédagogique Du Désir Féminin Alternatif Dans Le Roman Français De 1747 À 1997, Valerie S. Putnam
Une Étude Foucaldienne De La « Femme Exotique » Comme Figure Pédagogique Du Désir Féminin Alternatif Dans Le Roman Français De 1747 À 1997, Valerie S. Putnam
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This dissertation examines the exotic woman's character in four French novels, Lettres d'une Péruvienne (1747) by Françoise de Graffigny, Ourika (1823) by Claire de Duras, La jongleuse (1900) by Rachilde and Poisson d'or (1997) by J-M.G. Le Clézio. Its principal argument is to show how these novels have been able to escape the interpretative constraint which sees in the figure of the exotic woman a space of Western colonization and domination, a figure subjugated by the double yoke of race and sex, subjected to the despotism of imitation. The reading of these novels suggests interpreting the use of this exotic …

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne
Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne
History ETDs
I argue in my dissertation, 'Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History of Contraceptives in the United States, 1873—2010,' that through the processes of contraceptive production, consumption, and disposal, over time, the role of contraceptives in human/nature interactions has become more significant and the impact more direct. I examine the production, consumption, and disposal histories of condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps, intrauterine devices, and hormonal birth control. Production, consumption, and disposal of the birth control methods I study have determined physical experiences with both our bodies and with the non-human natural world, but those three processes have also shaped discourse …

Dna Translocation Through An Array Of Kinked Nanopores, Zh Chen
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Synthetic solid-state nanopores are being intensively investigated as single-molecule sensors for detection and characterization of DNA, RNA, and proteins. This field has been inspired by the exquisite selectivity and flux demonstrated by natural biological channels and the dream of emulating these behaviors in more robust synthetic materials that are more readily integrated into practical devices. To date, the guided etching of polymer films, focused ion beam sculpting, and electron-beam lithography and tuning of silicon nitride membranes have emerged as three promising approaches to define synthetic solid-state pores with sub-nanometer resolution. These procedures have in common the formation of nominally cylindrical …

"'I speak for the entire UNM team when I tell you that, from our perspective, the report is excellent. As we say in our formal response, we believe that if most of the recommendations in the Report were implemented, we would have a better performing system of higher education in New Mexico. And the idea of having a true ""system"" is a critical concept as we look to the future. It is this concept, and UNM\'s role in that system, that I would like to spend a significant portion of my time talking about this morning.'"
