Conquest, Consequences, Restoration: The Art Of Rebecca Belmore, Kathleen Marie Deblassie Dec 2010

Conquest, Consequences, Restoration: The Art Of Rebecca Belmore, Kathleen Marie Deblassie

Art & Art History ETDs

Rebecca Belmore (Ojibwa/Anishinabe, b. 1960 in Upsala, Ontario), embraces three themes in her oeuvre: conquest, consequences and restoration.Through the mediums of performance art, installation, video and photography, Belmore confronts Indigenous issues regarding land theft, identity, gender, racism, stereotypes, memory, contested histories, and the recovery and reclamation of a decolonized self. All of these themes are sub-categories that fall under the larger theme of the consequences of conquest. The most significant component of Belmores work, however, is restoration, which embraces themes of healing, self-determination and sovereignty. Traditional art-historical methodologies can and have been used to analyze Indigenous art. This thesis proposes that …

Looking For Stability: Holistic Policy Analysis In Light Of Rapid Development Among Kham Tibetan Herding Groups, J. Marc Foggin, Jared Phillips

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In efforts to improve people’s standard of living and to prevent serious ecological degradation, government has recently enacted at least 14 different policies that have had, and are likely to have, immense consequences for the Kham Tibetan people’s way of life. Unfortunately, there are often unforeseen, unintended consequences to such widespread and rapid restructuring of society. This paper examines these policies in a holistic fashion, each policy examined independently and in concert with each other; that is, in both a linear and a vertical manner, in order to show how researchers and policy-makers may gain a better grasp about how …

Digital Tools, Strategic Alliances, And The Protection Of Traditional Knowledge, B Singer, Judith Van Der Elst, J Garcia Sep 2010

Digital Tools, Strategic Alliances, And The Protection Of Traditional Knowledge, B Singer, Judith Van Der Elst, J Garcia

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

This white paper provides a means for indigenous peoples to communicate current information and impacts among constituents and tribal groups. These concepts are very important in understanding how these groups disseminate policy and resource utilization impacts such as energy policies related to traditional knowledge associated to generic resources. In todays society the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) is imminent yet, large segments of the world remain marginalized. Our contention is that peer-to-peer and inter-institutional networks can be used to connect local with global systems to close this divide. Using today virtual and digital technologies the gap can be bridged …

An Evaluation Of Water Treatment Technologies Piloted At Lanl To Improve Cooling Tower Water Efficiency., Patricia Vardaro-Charles Sep 2010

An Evaluation Of Water Treatment Technologies Piloted At Lanl To Improve Cooling Tower Water Efficiency., Patricia Vardaro-Charles

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

This paper presents an evaluation of three technologies piloted at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for improving cooling tower water efficiency. High silica content (average of 88 mg/L) in LANL source water requires frequent blow down in cooling tower systems to avoid accumulation of silica scale on heat transfer surfaces. At concentrations above 150 mg/L, silica scaling on heat transfer surfaces can occur to the extent scale causes a reduction in cooling effectiveness and can lead to system shutdown. The pilot project evaluated two chemical treatment processes and two silica removal processes for a period of 4 months in a …

Evaluating Stormwater Best Management Practices In A Small Urban Watershed, Kerry Gregg Bassore Sep 2010

Evaluating Stormwater Best Management Practices In A Small Urban Watershed, Kerry Gregg Bassore

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Urban growth adversely affects water quality by increasing the amount of nonpoint source pollutants that are transported to receiving waters. Phase IT of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is a regulatory program designed to confront the non-point source pollution problem. Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is one of many counties that are required to identify Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control non-point source pollution under Phase IT of the NPDES. The Adobe Acres stormwater lift station drains storm flows that originate from an urban residential area in Bernalillo County and discharge to the Rio Grande. This project begins to …

Chemistry Variation During Purging Of Alluvial Wells At Los Alamos National Laboratory, Eric T. Riebsomer Sep 2010

Chemistry Variation During Purging Of Alluvial Wells At Los Alamos National Laboratory, Eric T. Riebsomer

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The purpose of this study is to determine how chemistry results vary from shallow alluvial wells during purging. We sampled seven shallow alluvial wells at four different purge volumes. Drawdown and the field parameters pH, DO, EC, ORP, and turbidity were collected to determine stabilization trends for each well. During each sampling event, water samples were collected after purging one-half, one, two, and three well bores, and later analyzed for metals (unfiltered), and major cations and anions (filtered). Drawdown and turbidity were the only field parameters measured that affected the results. LAO-0.7, MCO-5, MCO-7, and CDBO-6 each had drawdown in …

Core Research Site Web Quadrat Data For The Net Primary Production Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1999-Present), Esteban Muldavin

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

This dataset is part of a long-term study at the Sevilleta LTER measuring net primary production (NPP) across four distinct ecosystems: creosote-dominant shrubland (Site C, est. winter 1999), black grama-dominant grassland (Site G, est. winter 1999), blue grama-dominant grassland (Site B, est. winter 2002), and pinon-juniper woodland (Site P, est. winter 2003). Net primary production is a fundamental ecological variable that quantifies rates of carbon consumption and fixation. Estimates of NPP are important in understanding energy flow at a community level as well as spatial and temporal responses to a range of ecological processes. Above-ground net primary production is the …

Coyote Population Densities At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004), Robert Parmenter

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

This study measured the population dynamics of coyotes in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was begun in January, 1992, and continued quarterly each year. Coyotes were sampled via scat counts along the roads of McKenzie Flats during winter, spring, summer, and fall of each year. The entire road transect was 21.5 miles in length. Scat counts over a week period (number of scats/mile/day) in each season along the roads were used to calculate the densities of coyotes (number of coyotes per square kilometer). Results from 1992 to 2002 indicated that autumn …

Temporal Dynamics Of Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Resources Within A Grassland-Creosote Ecotone At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-1994), Carleton White, Thomas L. Kieft Sep 2010

Temporal Dynamics Of Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Resources Within A Grassland-Creosote Ecotone At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-1994), Carleton White, Thomas L. Kieft

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Plant communities across large portions of the southwestern United States have shifted from grassland to desert shrubland. Studies have demonstrated that soil nutrient resources become spatially more heterogeneous and are redistributed into islands of fertility with this shift in vegetation. This research addressed the additional question of whether soil resources become more temporally heterogeneous along a grassland-shrubland ecotome. Within adjacent grassland and creosotebush sites, soil profiles were described at 3 pits and samples collected for description of nutrient resources within the profile. Relative cover of plant species and bare soil were determined within each site by line transects. The top …

Effects Of Kangaroo Rats On Plant Species Dominance In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1988), Debra Peters, Scott Collins

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Our objective was to evaluate the effects of burrowing activities by banner-tail kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis Merriam) on plant community structure and species dominance for two patch types at an ecotone between shortgrass steppe and desert grasslands in New Mexico, USA. Ten mounds produced by kangaroo rats were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua gracilis (the dominant in shortgrass steppe communities) and ten mounds were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (the dominant in Chihuahuan desert grasslands). Plant cover and density by species were sampled from three locations associated with each mound: the mound proper, the edge of the …
