Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen
Latin American Studies ETDs
Marginality, Mayhem and Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries of Masculinity and Urban Violence in Contemporary Mexican and Brazilian Film is a comparative study that explores the confluence of cinematic discourse, violence, masculinity and constructions (or denial) of citizenship in present-day Latin America. My argument is that the thematization of violence and masculinity in contemporary Latin American film intercedes at a symbolic level into social relations that are increasingly mediated through images that depict what is socially permitted. This dissertation considers how film (re)structures perceptions of masculinity and its inter-linkages with cityscapes marked by social and material violence. Violence is at the …
Evidence For A Change In The Rate Of Aging Of Osteological Indicators In American Documented Skeletal Samples, Wendy Elizabeth Potter
Evidence For A Change In The Rate Of Aging Of Osteological Indicators In American Documented Skeletal Samples, Wendy Elizabeth Potter
Anthropology ETDs
The question of uniformity in skeletal age changes across populations is fundamental to all comparative work in skeletal biology. Whether an aging standard will work on target groups that differ in time, space, and background from the reference sample is essential for reliable, accurate age estimation. This research addressed whether a difference in skeletal senescence exists between older American documented collections and more recent ones. The pubic symphysis, auricular surface, sternal rib end, and suture obliteration were scored for a sample of American Blacks and Whites drawn from the Terry, Hamann-Todd, Bass Documented, Maxwell Museum, and Maricopa County Forensic Science …
High-Throughput Genomic/Proteomic Studies: Finding Structure And Meaning By Similarity, George Sidney Davidson
High-Throughput Genomic/Proteomic Studies: Finding Structure And Meaning By Similarity, George Sidney Davidson
Biology ETDs
The post-genomic challenge was to develop high-throughput technologies for measuring genome scale mRNA expression levels. Analyses of these data rely on computers in an unprecedented way to make the results accessible to researchers. My research in this area enabled the first compendium of microarray experiments for a multi-cellular eukaryote, Caenorhabditis elegans. Prior to this research approximately 6% of the C. elegans genome had been studied, and little was known about global expression patterns in this organism. Here I cluster data from 553 different microarray experiments and show that the results are stable, statistically significant and highly enriched for specific biological …
Always Read The Introduction: Integrating Regulatory And Coding Sequence Evolution In Yeast, Annette M. Evangelisti
Always Read The Introduction: Integrating Regulatory And Coding Sequence Evolution In Yeast, Annette M. Evangelisti
Biology ETDs
We analyze duplicate genes in a yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae with the aim of determining a genes history and to observe that gene in its genomic context. In Chapter 2 we show that the fate of a duplicate gene pair is in part determined by its genome location. Moreover, we show that for two classes of duplicate genes, resulting from either small-scale duplication or whole-genome duplication, this fate can often be assessed by measuring the patterns of asymmetry in the sequence divergence of the genes in question. In Chapter 3 we study duplicate genes in the context of their local environments …
Female Perception Of Testeronized Male Facial Images: Evidence Of A Co-Evolutionary Tradeoff Responsive To Conditions For Both Competition And Cooperation, Melissa L. Franklin
Female Perception Of Testeronized Male Facial Images: Evidence Of A Co-Evolutionary Tradeoff Responsive To Conditions For Both Competition And Cooperation, Melissa L. Franklin
Biology ETDs
Theorists and researchers who examine the evolutionary ecology of mating dynamics consider two primary forces, intrasexual and intersexual, as important pressures of selection. Bilateral symmetry and, more controversially, hormone markers in many species, impart information that has been found to influence some aspects of intersexual selection. Both symmetry, as a sign of developmental stability, and hormone markers (i.e., testosteronized traits as cues of immunocompetence) have been classically treated as signals of genetic fitness (Moller & Swaddle, 1997; Hamilton & Zuk, 1982), although neither are consistently shown to correlate with increased mating success. Indeed, results between studies on either trait independently …
Genome Architecture In The Fungal Kingdom, Diego Antonio Martinez
Genome Architecture In The Fungal Kingdom, Diego Antonio Martinez
Biology ETDs
Previous studies have suggested that the location of genes in genomes is not random; instead they may be organized in a way that is beneficial to cellular processes and the organism. While a few studies have investigated the organization of genes on a whole genome scale, they were limited in the functions of genes used in the search and in the number and type of genomes searched. With the recent explosion of available fungal genomes and tools to automatically annotate many genes in a short period of time, it is now possible to obtain a global view of the level …
Temporal Dynamics And Spatial Analysis Of Competing Dengue 2 Virus Strains In The Americas, Stacy O'Neil Scholle
Temporal Dynamics And Spatial Analysis Of Competing Dengue 2 Virus Strains In The Americas, Stacy O'Neil Scholle
Biology ETDs
The dengue virus is the causative agent of an important re-emerging infectious disease that has become increasingly significant in tropical America and the Caribbean due to the infiltration of a more pathogenic Asian/American strain of dengue serotype 2 into the population. This invading strain is responsible for epidemics of dengue hemorrhagic fever, a life-threatening disease that was not previously a large public health concern in the region. Here, I create a historical map of the invasion and replacement of the endemic American strain of dengue 2 by the Asian/American strain, showing that the timing of invasion spans 25 years, and …
Comparison Of Microbial Communities On Roots, Ceilings And Floors Of Two Lava Tube Caves In New Mexico, Jessica R. Snider
Comparison Of Microbial Communities On Roots, Ceilings And Floors Of Two Lava Tube Caves In New Mexico, Jessica R. Snider
Biology ETDs
Lava tube caves possess a rich and patchy mosaic of nutrients and water that fosters a wide variety of microbial life. Water percolating past vegetation and through surface soils introduces dissolved carbon and nitrogen into caves. Roots provide even higher levels of carbon, nitrogen and microorganisms as they grow into the cave environment from surface vegetation. I hypothesized that this mosaic of nutrients and energy resources has a direct effect on the distribution and composition of microbial communities within caves. To test this hypothesis, I selected two lava tube caves in New Mexico, USA and identified six zones consisting of …
The Human Skull: Definition By Integrationist And Modular Models, John Yard Anderson
The Human Skull: Definition By Integrationist And Modular Models, John Yard Anderson
Anthropology ETDs
The human mandible and cranium are parts of an integrated cranial complex. These regions are also major components of the modular system, which comprises multiple semi-autonomous areas within the body. Integration and modularity express structure and function across various hierarchical levels of organization in the body and are thus definable as two non-exclusive ways of viewing somatic structure. What is integrated at one level may be a separable, modular unit at another. This dissertation statistically examines the interface between integration and modularity as partitioned through various hierarchical levels in the human skull, including the mandible. This examination is framed as …
Mechanisms Of Augmented Coronary Artery Constriction Following Exposure To Diesel Exhaust, Tom W. Cherng
Mechanisms Of Augmented Coronary Artery Constriction Following Exposure To Diesel Exhaust, Tom W. Cherng
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Numerous epidemiology studies demonstrate that acute increases in air pollutants correlate with an increase in cardiovascular disease-related mortality. The pollutant diesel exhaust (DE) has been shown to impair both flow-mediated and agonist-induced dilation of the brachial artery, used as a surrogate for coronary artery function. It is speculated that enhanced sensitivity to the endogenous vasoconstrictor ET-1 impairs cardiac blood flow and contributes to the immediate onset of myocardial ischemia and infarction in humans following DE exposure. In addition, impaired endothelium-dependent dilation can be improved with the restoration of nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) activity. We therefore sought to determine the …
The Role Of Bcl-2 Modifying Factor (Bmf) In Airway Epithelial Cell Death, Amelia H. T. Unione
The Role Of Bcl-2 Modifying Factor (Bmf) In Airway Epithelial Cell Death, Amelia H. T. Unione
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
One of the components that obstruct the airway in asthma is the sudden and increased secretion of mucus from metaplastic mucous cells in small airways. Because previous studies have shown that the resolution of mucous cell metaplasia (MCM) during prolonged exposure of mice to allergen is mediated by IFN gamma and the Bcl-2 family of proteins, we investigated the regulation and the role of a pro-apoptotic BH3 domain-only protein, Bmf, in airway epithelial cells (AECs) treated with IFN gamma. We hypothesize that Bmf is crucial for IFN gamma-induced cell death. Our findings show that IFN gamma suppressed Bmf expression in …
- Immunosupression Of T-Dependent Antibody Responses By Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Arsenic In Spleen Cells From C57bl/6j Mice, Qian Li
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and arsenic are both toxic contaminants that are widely distributed in the environment. Previous studies have shown that certain levels of PAHs and arsenic exposure individually can lead to immune suppression and carcinogenesis. Co-exposures to these two classes of chemicals are commonly seen in the environment. However, no previous studies have evaluated the immunotoxicity following simultaneous exposure to both arsenic and PAHs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to define the immunotoxicity of selected PAHs and arsenic in a murine spleen cell system, and to elucidate possible toxicological mechanisms. Spleen cells were isolated from male …
Changes In C-Myb Activity During Proliferation, Anita M. Quintana
Changes In C-Myb Activity During Proliferation, Anita M. Quintana
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
c-myb encodes a transcription factor and is the cellular parent of the v-myb oncogene, which causes acute myeloid leukemia in chickens and mice. Truncation or deletion can unmask the oncogenic potential of the human c-myb gene and recent reports have established that the human c-myb locus is subject to translocation and duplication in human pediatric T-ALL. c-Myb is expressed in all proliferating hematopoietic progenitor cells and has been implicated in some solid tumors, such as breast and colon. Evidence suggests that c-Myb activity is cell type specific and cell cycle dependent. For example, c-Myb interacts with cyclin D1 and CDK6 …
Characterization Of Subspecies B1 Human Adenovirus Orf E3-10.9k, Kathryn Marie Frietze
Characterization Of Subspecies B1 Human Adenovirus Orf E3-10.9k, Kathryn Marie Frietze
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Subspecies B1 human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are important causes of acute respiratory disease in pediatric and military recruit populations. Although extensive epidemiological data document the genetic diversity of these human pathogens, little is known about the relevance of this genetic diversity on the pathogenesis and fitness of subspecies B1 HAdVs. Additionally, the unique molecular biology of these pathogens is understudied compared to the species C HAdV serotypes 2 and 5. One of the uniquely diverse regions of the HAdV genomes is the early region 3 (E3) transcription unit. These genes are implicated in pathogenesis, host-species specificity, and the modulation of the …
Nuances In A Panethnic Southwest Landscape, Angelica Solares
Nuances In A Panethnic Southwest Landscape, Angelica Solares
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Urban landscapes of places with large immigrant populations are transformed as immigrants bring a different use of space with them. Mexican immigrants throughout the southwestern United States have physically transformed the landscape, and these trans-formed places often result in spaces that foster socialization and assert cultural identity. This thesis proposes that a three-stage cycle of spatial production exists in Mexicano communities in the United States, and describes the authors three-stage cycle of spatial production model in detail. The cycle begins with the formation of an enclave, followed by the transformation of the urban landscape which then results in one of …

An Examination Of Communicative Dialectical Tensions And Paradoxes Encountered By Native American Researchers In The Field And In The Academy, Lorenda Belone
Communication ETDs
This study investigated the communicative dialectical tensions and paradoxical situations faced by Native researchers in the academy and in research with their own communities or with other Native communities. Thematic analysis was conducted on narratives from 12 semi-structured interviews from participants across the country. Three major themes emerged regarding communicative struggles for the participants when conducting research with Native communities: a dialectic of insider/outsider; challenge of developing positive communication; and concerns of appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Four major themes emerged with regards to communication challenges for the participants while working in the academy: insider-outsider dialectic, paradox of walking the talk, …
Dynamic Photon Painting, Zhe Chen
Dynamic Photon Painting, Zhe Chen
Computer Science ETDs
Photon-based radiosurgery is widely used for treating local and regional tumors. The key to improving the quality of radiosurgery is to increase the dose falloff rate from high dose regions inside the tumor to low dose regions of nearby healthy tissues and structures. Currently, most radiosurgeries rely on focusing a number of external radiation beams to create a sharp dose falloff. As the number of focused beams increases, the contributions from each beam will inevitably decrease, and hence an improved dose falloff will be obtained. However, with most radiosurgeries being delivered in a step-and-shoot manner, the number of external beams …
Molecular Simulations Of Dendritic Molecules : A Study Of Pamam And Phenyl-Acetylene Dendrimers, Mark Fleharty
Molecular Simulations Of Dendritic Molecules : A Study Of Pamam And Phenyl-Acetylene Dendrimers, Mark Fleharty
Computer Science ETDs
Dendrimers are branched molecules that often have chemical properties similar to proteins and other large organic molecules. Dendrimers presently have applications as reactive surfaces for catalysis, and as hosts for drug delivery. Computer simulations of dendritic molecules are difficult due to their relatively large size and the tendency of atoms within a dendrimer to come within very close proximity to each other. The large number of steric interactions makes modeling of dendrimers difficult due to unphysically high energies that arise when a modeler attempts to construct a starting dendrimer from which to minimize its energy. Here we present Dendmol, a …

The enrollment management division outlined an ambitious set of goals for academic year 2009/2010. Many of the goals have been completed, some are in progress to be completed by the beginning of this fall, and some have been quite challenging to meet. Attached please find our detailed Work Plan that identifies each goal and below is a summary of some of our initiatives. The move to the SSSC building provided us a venue to harmonize our back office operations and it allowed enrollment management staff to move out of working in silos and instead commence with the process of cross-training …
Identifying Comedy: The Linguistic Properties Of Humor, Aaron Frale
Identifying Comedy: The Linguistic Properties Of Humor, Aaron Frale
Theatre & Dance ETDs
This dissertation is a method to label comedy with a linguistic model. Comedy is defined via an audience's laughter. The first part presents anecdotal evidence and certain factors of comedy. Time and Cultural awareness play into the understanding of comedy. Time can situate the humor in a piece of writing. Cultural understanding can unlock the laughter in a joke. The second section breaks down comedy into a linguistic model. Expression, meaning, and context are the different parts of comedy. Each part has impact on humor. An audience understanding these three parts is critical to the concept of "comedy equals a …
Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Group Iib Metal Binding By Organic Ligands, Aliyar Mousavi
Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Group Iib Metal Binding By Organic Ligands, Aliyar Mousavi
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn) in the environment are all of toxicological and environmental concern, and the pollution of natural waters by any of these three elements is most serious. Mercury is the most environmentally concerning of the three because of the neurotoxin species monomethylmercury produced in aquatic systems through the methylation of Hg2+ by aquatic microorganisms. An important chemical process in natural waters that limits the availability of mercury for methylation is the binding of Hg(II) by natural organic matter (NOM). These associations are exceptionally strong, and as NOM is ubiquitous in aquatic environments, estimating equilibrium …
Conceptions Of First-Year Secondary Mathematics Intern Teachers, Alan Tennison
Conceptions Of First-Year Secondary Mathematics Intern Teachers, Alan Tennison
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Beginning mathematics teachers enter their classrooms with a network of conceptions about mathematics and how they will go about teaching it. These conceptions are based on a set of beliefs and body of mathematical knowledge. They are robust and deeply ingrained, and they influence how teachers approach the teaching and learning of mathematics. When teacher educators examine the relationship between teachers conceptions and their practices, they are able to better understand how teachers define their practice. This understanding, then, can inform their work in preservice and inservice teacher education. This study focused on the conceptions of three first-year secondary mathematics …
Like A Moth To The Flame: Modernity And Mary Wigman 1886-1973, Mary Anne Santos Newhall

History ETDs
From her birth in 1886 to her death in 1973, the life of German dancer Mary Wigman spanned the Wilhelmine Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the post-war years. She stands as a seminal figure in what has come to be known as the modern dance. Her Ausdruckstanz or dance of expression was fundamental to the development of dance and theater in Germany and beyond. Her aesthetic ideas were disseminated across the European continent and traveled to the United States through her own touring from 1929-1932 and continued after the establishment of the Mary Wigman School in New …
The Effects Of Drinkers' Concerned Significant Others On Alcohol Cue Reactivity, Benjamin Olson Ladd
The Effects Of Drinkers' Concerned Significant Others On Alcohol Cue Reactivity, Benjamin Olson Ladd
Psychology ETDs
Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are pervasive in society and notoriously difficult to treat successfully. Incorporation of a member of the social network into the therapeutic framework for treating AUDs has been found to improve treatment outcomes compared to individual-focused treatments. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of concerned significant others (CSO) on drinkers neural response to alcohol cues. A sample of social to heavy drinkers (n = 16) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan. During the scan, participants completed an alcohol cue reactivity task twice; one time by themselves, and another time while holding …
Multiple Perspectives On Functioning Of Families Impacted By Traumatic Brain Injury: Exploring Both Parental And Injured Child's Perceptions, Erica Montague
Multiple Perspectives On Functioning Of Families Impacted By Traumatic Brain Injury: Exploring Both Parental And Injured Child's Perceptions, Erica Montague
Psychology ETDs
Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have profound effects on a child, including permanent changes to cognition and personality. Despite the attention that pediatric TBI has received in the broader literature, few studies have explored the residual effect that TBI can have on global family functioning. The present study sought to extend the literature on family functioning following pediatric TBI by investigating the perspectives of multiple family members, including the injured child and the parent. It was hypothesized that all family members would view family functioning as more dysfunctional than a non-clinical sample. Fourteen injured adolescents who experienced a moderate to …
Accelerating Recovery Of Behavioral And Cognitive Functions Via Single Intracerebral Injection Of Matrigel Containing Neurotrophic Factors After Somatosensory Contusion In Adult Rats, Nariman Arfai
Psychology ETDs
Unilateral sensorimotor contusion injury results in contralateral hindlimb paralysis as well as behavioral & cognitive deficits in rats. In response to cortical injury, adult neural stem cells (NSC) in the subventricular zone (SVZ) proliferate, and generate new neurons & glia that migrate towards injured areas. Thus, they may potentially be harnessed for neural repair. After cortical injury, the number of migratory NSCs to lesioned sites has been shown to be significantly lower than the overall cell loss in rats. To address this issue, in-vitro & in-vivo studies have shown that various growth factors (GF) enhance the rate of proliferation, differentiation …

Ozone And Biofiltration As An Alternative To Reverse Osmosis For Removing Ppcps And Edcs From Wastewater, Carson Odell Lee
Civil Engineering ETDs
A lot of attention has been paid to trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in drinking water supplies. Current water and wastewater treatment techniques, such as coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation for water treatment and the conventional activated sludge process for wastewater treatment, have shown only limited success in their removal. Although there is a lack of evidence linking these emerging microconstituents to adverse human health effects, not a lot is known about the effects of long term exposure to these compounds and more research is still needed. This study examined advanced wastewater …

Constructing, Consuming, And Complicating The Human-Nature Binary: Communication Practices In Forest Environmental Education, Elizabeth Dickinson
Communication ETDs
This project combines interdisciplinary conversations within the field of communication to examine environmental meaning systems and communication practices in the context of forest environmental education. Due to concerns over children's environmental alienation, there has been a continued push toward place-based environmental education. One such venture is the North Carolina Educational State Forest system (NCESF), where educators bring K-12 students into forests to help them reconnect with nature, expand environmental knowledge, and tackle what has been recently termed "nature-deficit disorder." When students visit the sites, rangers deliver structured lessons on ecosystems and forest management to children and chaperones--lessons that must adhere …
