The Role Of Furin In Human Papillomavirus Infection, Sonya Persia Flores
The Role Of Furin In Human Papillomavirus Infection, Sonya Persia Flores
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the causative agent of cervical cancer and infect skin and mucosal membranes. Through wounding the virus establishes infection in the basal layer of human keratinocytes and requires differentiating squamous epithelium to complete the viral life cycle. HPV virions contain two structural viral proteins: the major capsid protein L1 that self-assembles into capsid structures, and the minor capsid protein, L2, that is essential for infection. It is believed that HPV cellular entry occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis and that the primary attachment factors used by the virus are heparan sulfonated proteoglycans (HSPGs). Most current HPV literature follows an …
Applications Of Voronoi Partitions In Particle Therapy, Daniel Riofrio
Applications Of Voronoi Partitions In Particle Therapy, Daniel Riofrio
Computer Science ETDs
Treating cancer using charged particles heavier than electrons is becoming more and more popular in modern cancer management due to its increased dose to the targeted tumors and improved sparing of surrounding normal tissues and critical structures. Many challenging and interesting mathematical optimization problems arise in the planning of charged particle radiation therapy. In this thesis, we study three important optimization problems in particle therapy, which includes dose optimization, energy modulation change reduction, and LET (linear energy transfer) painting. Generally speaking the goal of treatment planning is to use computer based algorithms and software to find a therapeutic plan that …

General Neural Networks Dynamics Are A Superposition Of Gradient-Like And Hamiltonian-Like Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, James W. Howse, Gregory L. Heileman
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This report presents a formalism that enables the dynamics of a broad class of neural networks to be understood. A number of previous works have analyzed the Lyapunov stability of neural network models. This type of analysis shows that the excursion of the solutions from a stable point is bounded. The purpose of this work is to present a model of the dynamics that also describes the phase space behavior as well as the structural stability of the system. This is achieved by writing the general equations of the neural network dynamics as the sum of gradient-like and Hamiltonian-like systems. …

The Effects Of Temperature Forcing On Dengue Dynamics Via The Extrinsic Incubation Period, Paula Danielle Weber
The Effects Of Temperature Forcing On Dengue Dynamics Via The Extrinsic Incubation Period, Paula Danielle Weber
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Dengue fever is a mosquito-transmitted disease that is endemic in many parts of the tropical world and affects a significant proportion of the human population. Temperature is known to influence aspects of the dengue transmission cycle, which has consequences for disease dynamics. Previous work has explored the effects of temperature on the mortality rate of the mosquito and the resulting population change. However, there is substantial evidence that the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of the pathogen within the vector host, Aedes aegypti, is also temperature dependent. This dependence has not been thoroughly researched. We present a single serotype compartmental model …

The distribution, structure and function of mesic savanna grasslands are strongly driven by fire regimes, grazing by large herbivores, and their interactions. This research addresses a general question about our understanding of savanna grasslands globally: Is our knowledge of fire and grazing sufficiently general to enable us to make accurate predictions of how these ecosystems will respond to changes in these drivers over time? Some evidence suggests that fire and grazing influence savanna grassland structure and function differently in South Africa (SA) compared to North America (NA). These differences have been attributed to the contingent factors of greater biome age, …

Long-Term Monitoring And Maintenance Plan For The Mixed Waste Landfill, March 2012, Sandia National Laboratories/Nm Snl
Facilities-Units
The Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) and Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) have submitted the Long-Term Monitoring and Maintenance Plan (LTMMP) to the New Mexico Environment Department, as required by the May 2005 Final Order. The LTMMP, which took effect on January 8, 2014, defines all remedy controls and monitoring, inspection, maintenance, repair, and reporting requirements for the MWL. The purpose of the long-term monitoring and maintenance program is to ensure that the final remedy (i.e., vegetative soil cover with biointrusion barrier) remans protective of human health and the environment. 276 pages.

Organizations As Systems In Crisis: Characteristics And Behaviors Of Successful Leaders, Dennis Paul Gonzales
Organizations As Systems In Crisis: Characteristics And Behaviors Of Successful Leaders, Dennis Paul Gonzales
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Given the increasingly complex and fluid nature of organizations today, there is an urgent need to study the role that leadership can play in helping organizations to successfully navigate through difficult and turbulent times. This dissertation investigated the journey of six participants who served as leaders in organizations during periods of change and turmoil. An interpretive phenomenological approach was the primary method of data collection, analysis, and interpretation used to organize the data gathered primarily through interviews with the participants. Personal experience, as well as current leadership and change theories served as the background and frame of reference for this …

A Look In The Mirror: Self-Development And Transformational Learning In Medical Students, Mary Elizabeth Walcher
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Given the call for change in medical school curriculum towards a more humanistic approach, it remains clear that there is an urgent need to study the effects of personal development classes on medical students skill level. Using participants from an ethical influence communications class, this study explored the impact of the use of reflection on personal awareness and professional competence skills in second and third year medical students. A total of 230 reflection papers from 46 medical students were analyzed using CAQDAS — computer assisted qualitative data analysis system-- with Atlas ti 6.2. Personal interviews (n=11) followed for clarification and …
Geochemical Characteristics And Microbial Diversity Of Co2-Rich Mound Springs Of The Tierra Amarilla Anticline, New Mexico, Brandi Cron
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
This interdisciplinary research explores the water geochemistry, microbial heterogeneity, geochemical cycling, and paleohydrological longevity of a unique set of desert springs in north-central New Mexico. This series of travertine-depositing CO2-rich springs is located along the boundary zone between the Colorado Plateau and Rio Grande rift, on the southern extension of the Nacimiento fault at the Tierra Amarilla anticline (TA). Geochemical data on the spring waters show 3He/4He ratio of 0.17-0.20 RA which indicates the presence of mantle-derived helium in the groundwater. Carbon isotope values range from -4.6 to -8.1 per mil, suggesting that some of the CO2 is also deeply …
