Health, Well-Being, And Experiences Of Discrimination For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Paulette J. Christopher

Psychology ETDs

Like racial and ethnic minorities, sexual minorities (lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people) are at increased risk for mental (Meyer, 2003; Hatzenbuehler, 2009) and physical (Conran, Mimiaga, & Landers, 2008; Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, 2010; Huebner & Davis, 2007) health problems compared to heterosexuals. The current study attempted to 1) determine if the stress related to discrimination mediated the relationship between discrimination and health and well-being for LGB people, and 2) and identify risk and resilience factors specific to LGB people that might moderate the relationship between discrimination related stress and LGB health, mental health and satisfaction with life. …

Ptsd, Appraisal, And Coping Among Firefighters During A Disaster Scenario, Laurie Steffen Feb 2012

Ptsd, Appraisal, And Coping Among Firefighters During A Disaster Scenario, Laurie Steffen

Psychology ETDs

The transactional model of stress and coping (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984) and the cognitive model of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD; Ehlers and Clark, 2000) both emphasize the importance of appraisal in understanding the person by environment interaction. However, very few studies have examined Lazarus and Folkmans (1984) challenge and threat appraisals as they relate to PTSD. The current research studied the relationships between PTSD, situation-specific appraisal, and state coping among 124 firefighters presented with a chemical spill disaster scenario. Challenge appraisal was related to problem-focused coping whereas threat appraisal was strongly related to avoidant coping. As part of an exploratory …

Frequency Specific Deficits In Schizophrenia, Anil Reddy Geeda Feb 2012

Frequency Specific Deficits In Schizophrenia, Anil Reddy Geeda

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Coherence estimation is one of the methods for understanding functional connectivity deficits and frequency specific deficits in schizophrenia. Coherence between different lobes of the brain from task related data at different frequency bands was investigated in patients with Schizophrenia (SP) and Healthy Normal Volunteers (HNV). The task was aimed to study the neural mechanisms underlying auditory and visual integration in patients with schizophrenia relative to healthy controls, which requires intact connectivity between the lobes of the brain in order to recombine the sensory information into a complete percept of the external world. Coherence was calculated from the processed magneto-encephalography (MEG) …

Examining The Influence Of Instructional Strategy On Student Learning And Self-Efficacy In Science, Carolyn Hushman Feb 2012

Examining The Influence Of Instructional Strategy On Student Learning And Self-Efficacy In Science, Carolyn Hushman

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This study investigated whether the level of instructional guidance affected student learning and science self-efficacy when nine- and ten- year old children learn to design unconfounded experiments using control of variable strategies (CVS). Specifically, the goal of this study was to replicate and extend prior research that examines the impact of the level of guidance on ability to successfully design scientifically credible experiments that isolate the relationship between two variables (Klahr & Nigam, 2004). Sixty children, who were enrolled in a summer sports program, were randomly assigned in equal numbers to one of the three following conditions: 1) guided instruction, …

Gender Matters In Batterer Intervention Program Settings: Curriculum Topics Are Most Helpful In Fostering Positive Change In Domestic Violence Behavior, Courtney Cameron

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Abstract Domestic violence is truly a complex issue in terms of defining it — no single definition can be found, in terms of understanding its causality ,some view it as a gender issue, others perceived it a socio-political issue, many consider it a criminal issue, and others treat it a psycho-social issue, in terms of its impact , its magnitude, effect and impact are far reaching and may last for a life time, in terms of its dynamics, its victims and perpetrators come from all demographic groups, and in terms of the effective intervention, they tend to focus on victimization …

Function Assignment Within The Haloacid Dehalogenase Superfamily, Hua Huang Feb 2012

Function Assignment Within The Haloacid Dehalogenase Superfamily, Hua Huang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The HaloacidDehalogenase Enzyme Superfamily (HADSF) is a ubiquitous family of enzymes. Presently, more than 45,000 deposited gene sequences encode proteins of the HADSF, and only a fraction of these have defined structure and/or function. The work described in this thesis focuses on function determination in several members of the HADSF. An integrated bioinformatic-protein structure-enzyme mechanism approach was used to differentiate and track D-glycero-D-manno-heptose-1,7-bisphosphate phosphatase (GHMB) and histidinol phosphatephosphatase (HisB)orthologues; 2-keto-3-deoxynononic acid 9-phosphatephosphatase (KDN9PP) and 2-keto-3-deoxy-D-manno-octulosonic acid 8-phosphatephosphatase (KDO8PP)orthologues; inorganic pyrophosphatase and β-phosphoglucomutase(β-PGM) orthologues. In addition, a structure-function/bioinformatic analysis was carried-out on the bifunctional 1,3-diposphoglycerate acyltransferase/Cys-S-glyceryl-3-phosphate phosphatase (FKBH). Each study began …

Evolution Of Structure And Function Among Hotdog-Fold Thioesterases And Had Family Phosphatases, Wang Min Feb 2012

Evolution Of Structure And Function Among Hotdog-Fold Thioesterases And Had Family Phosphatases, Wang Min

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

My doctoral research began with the function assignment to two domains of fusion protein BT4699, from Bacteriodes thetaiotaomicron, BF1314 from Bacteriodes fragilis and PG1653 from Porphyromonas gingivalis. BT4699, however, is insoluble, so its orthologue BF1314 and PG1653 were prepared and studied. The fusion proteins consist of a domain that belong to a large family of phosphatases known as Haloacid Dehalogenase (HAD) superfamily, and a domain belong to the hotdog-fold thioesterase superfamily. The genes encoding the fusion proteins located at an operon that encoding enzymes involved in the menaquinone biosynthetic pathway. So we assumed that the thioesterase domain is connected to …

Biosorption Of Uranium And Its Effect On Uranium Transport In Groundewater, Jeanette Leavitt Feb 2012

Biosorption Of Uranium And Its Effect On Uranium Transport In Groundewater, Jeanette Leavitt

Civil Engineering ETDs

In past years, microbial reduction has been explored as a remediation method for uranium-contaminated groundwater at U.S. Department of Energy sites with promising results. Although transport models have been improved to include variations in geochemical concentrations, reductive microbial processes, and adsorption of uranium to minerals, they do not incorporate the presence of microorganisms as sorption sites that may influence the overall transport of uranium. The main objective of this research was to determine the effects of uranium biosorption on the overall transport of uranium by understanding the solution chemical equilibrium and its effects on modeling sorption. This was done by …

Selective Fluoride Removal By Aluminum Precipitation & Membrane Filtration, Emily Kowalchuk Feb 2012

Selective Fluoride Removal By Aluminum Precipitation & Membrane Filtration, Emily Kowalchuk

Civil Engineering ETDs

Fluoride is an anionic constituent of most natural surface and ground waters. At low concentrations it has the beneficial effect of improving dental health, but at high concentrations it causes skeletal and other problems. The drinking water standard for fluoride is 4.0 mg/L, but even at this level approximately 10% of exposed children will develop dental enamel fluorosis. Several small communities in New Mexico have source waters with fluoride concentrations higher than 4.0 mg/L. No commercial technologies selectively remove fluoride from drinking water in part because it is relatively non-reactive in aqueous solution and also because its chemistry is similar …

Censorship And Holocaust Film In The Hollywood Studio System, Nancy Copeland Halbgewachs Feb 2012

Censorship And Holocaust Film In The Hollywood Studio System, Nancy Copeland Halbgewachs

Sociology ETDs

Following the end of World War II in 1945 to 1969, Hollywood films remained silent about the extermination camps, the sites of the murders and incineration of European Jews by Nazi Germany that came to be known as the Holocaust. The Hollywood studio system produced very few Holocaust motion pictures before 1980. This research provides evidence from the files of the Hays Commission in the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to support the hypothesis that censorship was a major social cause of this silence. The correspondence between members of the Hays Commission, the …

The Influence Of Women's Status On Economic Development: A Pooled Time Series Cross-Sectional Analysis Of 126 Countries, 1980-2005, Lynzie Rowland

Sociology ETDs

The role of women in development has generated countless studies devoted to illuminating distinct aspects of womens lives and experiences. Several theories, developmentalism and social feminism, were created as a response to modernization theory's inattention to the roles of women in the process of development. Developmentalism has focused on the influence of the improved status of women on economic development. This study examines this association from the developmentalist perspective for 126 countries every five years between 1980 and 2005. Additionally, this paper investigates the linking mechanisms of women's status to economic development. Secondary data acquired from the World Bank website …

The Other Vanishing American: Disappearing Farmers In American Literature, 1887-1939., Carolyn Kuchera Feb 2012

The Other Vanishing American: Disappearing Farmers In American Literature, 1887-1939., Carolyn Kuchera

English Language and Literature ETDs

Beginning in the late nineteenth century, literary depictions of farmers borrow from the established trope of the Vanishing American' Indian to portray farmers as disappearing before the forces of modern civilization. I argue that writing about farmers from this era ought to be approached as a type of extinction discourse: the rhetoric surrounding the decline of a race or culture. Extinction discourse, whether applied to the American Indian or to farmers, fuses mourning over a passing way of life with celebration of civilization's progress. Farmers are portrayed as primitive figures, as fundamentally incompatible with modern civilization, in all of the …

The Evaluation Of Erk1 Dimerization Models Using Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy And The Development Of Analysis Algorithms For Single-Molecule Super Resolution, Fang Huang Feb 2012

The Evaluation Of Erk1 Dimerization Models Using Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy And The Development Of Analysis Algorithms For Single-Molecule Super Resolution, Fang Huang

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In this dissertation, we describe three advancements in the area of fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. First, we have implemented Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy on a home-built confocal microscope. We proposed F/N analysis which stands for the ratio between average intensity and average number of moving objects in FCS as a method to detect dimerization of fluorescently tagged proteins diffusing in three dimensions. We used the technique to evaluate the dimerization hypothesis of ERK1 protein during nucleus translocation and it shows that ERK1 nucleus translocation is dimerization independent. Second, we have developed a multi-emitter analysis algorithm for single-molecule super resolution techniques that …

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Journey From 'Indio Puro' To Cultural Mestizo: Indigenous Identity, Mestizaje, And Nationalism In Nineteenth-Century Mexico, Angelica Sanchez-Clark Feb 2012

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Journey From 'Indio Puro' To Cultural Mestizo: Indigenous Identity, Mestizaje, And Nationalism In Nineteenth-Century Mexico, Angelica Sanchez-Clark

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Like many Mexican Liberal intellectuals, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano (b. Tixtla, Guerrero, 1834; d. San Remo, Italy, 1893) played a central role in defining the role that the mestizo—and, by force of circumstance, the Indian—would play in the formation of national identity after Mexicos independence from Spain. This dissertation examines Altamirano's literary and political works, as well as his personal correspondence, and his experiences as a soldier, educator, and politician, in order to understand how Altamirano, represented as an 'indio puro' who underwent the transformation to mestizo, exemplifies the link between Mexico's colonial past and its struggle to define its national …

Charged Hadron Beam Therapy : Fast Computational Physics Methods, Roy William Keyes Feb 2012

Charged Hadron Beam Therapy : Fast Computational Physics Methods, Roy William Keyes

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Charged hadron beams have been investigated for use in radiation therapy of cancer since the 1940s due to their unique potential to place tightly conformal radiation doses deep inside tissue. This is achieved by exploiting the phenomenon of the so-called Bragg peak. In both research and clinical settings, fast and accurate radiation calculations play a crucial role in charged hadron therapy physics. Unfortunately, physicists are often faced with the fundamental trade off of speed versus accuracy in their calculations. This dissertation addresses this trade off by presenting three computational physics methods for specific and general charged hadron beam therapy calculations. …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Synthetic Substrates For Use In Rigidity Cell Culture Studies Of Valvular Interstitial Cells For Aortic Valve Tissue Engineering, Alexander T. Leonard Feb 2012

Fabrication And Characterization Of Synthetic Substrates For Use In Rigidity Cell Culture Studies Of Valvular Interstitial Cells For Aortic Valve Tissue Engineering, Alexander T. Leonard

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

More than 100,000 Americans each year undergo aortic valve (AV) replacement due to valve failure. An AV can become diseased, impairing the proper function of the valve. Common treatments for a defective valve are either replacement with a decellularized biologic or a synthetic valve. These treatments options are limited by short functional lifetime and thrombogenic surfaces. Tissue engineered heart valve will have the ability to integrate with the surrounding tissue as well as to repair and remodel. However, a greater understanding of valve cell biology is required to induce analogous tissue formation. A diseased valve is associated with stiffening of …

Nano-Structured Platinum-Based Catalysts For The Complete Oxidation Of Ethylene Glycol And Glycerol, Akinbayowa Falase Feb 2012

Nano-Structured Platinum-Based Catalysts For The Complete Oxidation Of Ethylene Glycol And Glycerol, Akinbayowa Falase

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Direct alcohol fuel cells are a viable alternative to the traditional hydrogen PEM fuel cell. Fuel versatility, integration with existing distribution networks, and increased safety when handling these fuels increases their appeal for portable power applications. In order to maximize their utility, the liquid fuel must be fully oxidized to CO2 so as to harvest the full amount of energy. Methanol and ethanol are widely researched as potential fuels to power these devices, but methanol is a toxic substance, and ethanol has a much lower energy density than other liquids such as gasoline or glucose. Oxidation of complex fuels is …

Charge Transfer Embedded-Atom Potentials For Atomistic Simulations Of Amino Acids And Proteins, Amo-Kwao Godwin Jan 2012

Charge Transfer Embedded-Atom Potentials For Atomistic Simulations Of Amino Acids And Proteins, Amo-Kwao Godwin

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The dynamical simulation of biophysical systems requires force fields (interaction potentials) capable of describing bond formation and breaking and reactive charge transfer. Molecular motor proteins such as kinesin, dynein and myosin have the extraordinary ability of converting chemical energy to mechanical energy by the process of ATP hydrolysis used for motility. This work is motivated by the reactive force field developed recently by Valone and Atlas[1—4], the charge-transfer embedded atom method (CT-EAM). CT-EAM is based on the empirical embedded-atom method (EAM) pioneered by Daw and Baskes[5]. CT-EAM extends the EAM to re- active molecular systems, through a formal basis in …

Risky Subjects, Subjects At Risk: Hpv Vaccination And The Neoliberal Turn In Public Health, Anzia Bennett Jan 2012

Risky Subjects, Subjects At Risk: Hpv Vaccination And The Neoliberal Turn In Public Health, Anzia Bennett

American Studies ETDs

This thesis utilizes the example of Gardasil to better understand the dynamics of power at play in discourses of health in the United States, and to identify the neoliberal tenors of some contemporary public health strategies. A neoliberal turn in public health, while not all encompassing, has resulted in distorted and limited conceptions of health that rely on consumerism and notions of personal responsibility. With the example of Gardasil, Merck has deployed age-old tropes that pre-date, and are strengthened by, this neoliberal turn. These tropes--of women and girls as simultaneously at-risk and risky subjects, of young women's bodies in need …
