Sex, Violence And The Female Sex Offender, Christine Romero-Debell Jan 2015

Sex, Violence And The Female Sex Offender, Christine Romero-Debell

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

A female sex offender is any female who engages in criminal sexual penetration, and/or criminal sexual contact with a minor and is charged with a criminal offense within a court of law (New Mexico Statutes and Court Rules, Unannotated, 2012) Early research purports that there is a high prevalence of male sex offenders in comparison to the low prevalence of female sex offenders. A large body of research focuses on male sex offenders but it is problematic to generalize the results of these studies to women sex offenders (Vandiver & Walker, 2002; Wijkman, Bijleveld, & Hendricks, 2010). The gap in …

Glucose/ Oxygen-Based Biofuel Cell For Biomedical Applications: Electrode Designs Integrating Carbon Composite, Claudia W. Narvaez Villarrubia

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

The relevance of this research is based on the need to develop biofuel cells as an alternative technology for powering implantable and/or extracorporeal medical devices. To accomplish this, processes occurring in nature are mimicked on the surface of bioelectrodes by enzymatic systems. In this research, various 'hot' topics, at different stages of the development of the technology, are revised in order to: accomplish understanding of the principles governing the normal operation of a glucose/O2 fuel cell, overcome obstacles to advance over the current technological limitations, and propose designs at the nanostructural catalytic layer scale as well as assembly platforms for …

A Biomechanical Analysis Of One-Third Tubular Plates For The Treatment Of Benign Lesions In The Distal Femur, Justin Brantley Jan 2015

A Biomechanical Analysis Of One-Third Tubular Plates For The Treatment Of Benign Lesions In The Distal Femur, Justin Brantley

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of one-third tubular plates for the treatment of benign defects in the medial distal metaphysis of the femur. Benign cysts are a common occurrence in long bones, and are of concern in load-bearing bones, such as the tibia and femur. These space-occupying growths are removed by curettage of the affected region. Numerous post-curettage management options have been described in the literature, which generally include filling the defect with either synthetic or biological materials. Unfortunately, complications, such as infectious disease transmission, thermal injury, and a robust inflammatory have all been reported …

Investigating Joint Attention Behaviors And Episodes In 18-Month Toddlers Born Very Low Birth Weight Compared To Toddlers Born Normal Birth Weight, Lauren Rowell Jan 2015

Investigating Joint Attention Behaviors And Episodes In 18-Month Toddlers Born Very Low Birth Weight Compared To Toddlers Born Normal Birth Weight, Lauren Rowell

Psychology ETDs

Background: Prior studies have shown that joint attention (JA) behaviors and episodes, which involve person-person-object awareness, serve an important role in toddlers cognitive and social development. There are two forms of JA behaviors in which a toddler can engage: responding joint attention (RJA) behavior in which the toddler shifts attention to an object to which the mother is attending, and initiating joint attention (IJA) behavior in which a toddler bids for the mother's attention around an object. If a JA behavior is responded to, it becomes a JA episode. Prior research suggests that these different JA behaviors (RJA and IJA) …

Strongly Nonlinear Phenomena And Singularities In Optical, Hydrodynamic And Biological Systems, Sergey Dyachenko Jan 2015

Strongly Nonlinear Phenomena And Singularities In Optical, Hydrodynamic And Biological Systems, Sergey Dyachenko

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Singularity formation is an inherent feature of equations in nonlinear physics, in many situations such as in self-focusing of light nonlinearity is essential part of the model and physical events cannot be captured by linearized equations. There are nonlinear systems, such as $1$D NLSE where singularities in analytic continuation would follow a soliton solution at fixed distances and while it is true that soliton determines the position of all the singularities, it is also true that evolution of singularities determines the solution on the real axis. Before we go further to discuss $2$D problems, we want to be more specific …

Delaunay-Laguerre Geometry For Macromolecular Modeling And Implicit Solvation, Michelle Hummel Jan 2015

Delaunay-Laguerre Geometry For Macromolecular Modeling And Implicit Solvation, Michelle Hummel

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

We develop and implement geometric methods to study three-dimensional structures of proteins, the knowledge of which is critical to the understanding of the molecules and their interactions. Delaunay and Laguerre methods, which concern sets of overlapping spheres and their interrelationships, are well suited to the study of molecules. We discuss and implement algorithms for the calculation of molecular volume, atomic solvent accessible surface areas, their gradients and discontinuities. This is used for a detailed analysis of parameters obtained by the implicit solvation method, Semi-Explicit Assembly (SEA). We introduce the concept of Laguerre-Intersection cells which consist of the intersection of the …

A Generalized Confidence Interval Approach To Comparing Log-Normal Means, With Application, Bose Falk Jan 2015

A Generalized Confidence Interval Approach To Comparing Log-Normal Means, With Application, Bose Falk

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Generalized Confidence Intervals (GCI) can be constructed for cases where an exact confidence interval based on sufficient statistics is not available. In this thesis, we first review three existing tests for log-normal data using the GCI approach. Then we propose fiducial generalized pivotal quantities (FGPQ)-based simultaneous confidence intervals for ratios of log-normal means, and prove that the constructed confidence intervals have correct asymptotic coverage. These methods are then applied to a dataset from the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) to test for differences between energy saving percentages among different groups.

Structural Elucidation Of The Interaction Between Neurodegenerative Disease-Related Tau Protein With Model Lipid Membranes, Emmalee Jones Jan 2015

Structural Elucidation Of The Interaction Between Neurodegenerative Disease-Related Tau Protein With Model Lipid Membranes, Emmalee Jones

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

A protein's sequence of amino acids determines how it folds. That folded structure is linked to protein function, and misfolding to dysfunction. Protein misfolding and aggregation into β-sheet rich fibrillar aggregates is connected with over 20 neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is characterized in part by misfolding, aggregation and deposition of the microtubule associated tau protein into neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). However, two questions remain: What is tau's fibrillization mechanism, and what is tau's cytotoxicity mechanism? Tau is prone to heterogeneous interactions, including with lipid membranes. Lipids have been found in NFTs, anionic lipid vesicles induced aggregation of the …

Development Of Optical Systems And Imaging Analyses For Hyperspectral Microscopy And 3d Super-Resolution Imaging, Sheng Liu Jan 2015

Development Of Optical Systems And Imaging Analyses For Hyperspectral Microscopy And 3d Super-Resolution Imaging, Sheng Liu

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Many of the unanswered questions in cellular biology involve the functionality and structural composition of different cells. Generally, most of the unanswered questions that are of interest require information regarding protein-protein interactions or information on the general structure of the cell. Most of these features exist on size scales of 10 to 200 nm, of which conventional fluorescence microscopy is incapable of resolving details less than 200 nm. Therefore, many advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques have been developed over the past few decades to address the demands of higher resolutions (both spatial and temporal) as well as multicolor imaging in order …
