A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma May 2015

A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma

Latin American Studies ETDs

This research follows the movement of the American tropical root crop manioc [Manihot esulenta] throughout the Afro-Portuguese world between ca. 1500 to ca.1800. In addition to tracing the spatial movement of the plant, this thesis will also show how manioc was culturally redefined as an African crop and how this effected its reception and meaning upon returning to the New World from Africa. In tracking the geographical diffusion of the plant from the Americas to Africa, this research relies upon primary sources on the exploration of Brazil and Africa by European travelers and accounts of the early era of the …

Gold, Water, And Governance: The Stakes In The Santurbán Páramo Debate, Amanda Hooker May 2015

Gold, Water, And Governance: The Stakes In The Santurbán Páramo Debate, Amanda Hooker

Latin American Studies ETDs

Currently in Santander, Colombia, a contentious debate over the demarcation of a protective boundary of the Santurbán Páramo is underway. For the approximately 9000 páramo residents, the collateral effects of the outcome could result in dispossession of lands and livelihoods. This paper will argue that status quo Colombian territorial zoning, at the service of Canadian mining interests cast domestically as the principal 'locomotora' (driving force) of national development, allows different expressions of state and civil society actors to either bypass or use environmental protections as means of personal gain and/or capitalist expansion. Mobilizing under a discourse of conservation, down-stream urban …

The Indirect Effects Of Climate Variability On The Reproductive Dynamics And Productivity Of An Avian Predator In The Arid Southwest, Corrie C. Borgman May 2015

The Indirect Effects Of Climate Variability On The Reproductive Dynamics And Productivity Of An Avian Predator In The Arid Southwest, Corrie C. Borgman

Biology ETDs

The deserts of the Southwestern United States are experiencing rapid warming and climate models predict declining winter precipitation. The combined effects of higher air temperatures and drought are a reduction in productivity, which may importantly impact reproduction in consumers. Here, we investigate the effects of warming and drought on the reproductive timing and output in loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) in central New Mexico from 2007 to 2012. We found increases in air temperature of 3°C during the breeding season (March—July) and highly variable winter and annual precipitation. With increasing spring temperatures, shrikes advanced nesting phenology by 20 days over 6 …

Cultural Interaction And Biological Distance Among Postclassic Mexican Populations, Corey Steven Ragsdale May 2015

Cultural Interaction And Biological Distance Among Postclassic Mexican Populations, Corey Steven Ragsdale

Anthropology ETDs

Human population structure is influenced by cultural and biological interactions. Little is known regarding to what extent cultural interactions effect biological processes such as migration and genetic exchange among prehistoric populations. In this study, I draw upon archaeological and ethnohistoric research to investigate the interaction of biology and culture among Postclassic period (AD 900-1519) Mexican populations. The central question for this project is: how did processes of economic exchange and political expansion affect genetic exchange among Postclassic period Mexican populations? To address this question, various biological distance analyses derived from dental morphological traits were employed to investigate inter- and intra-regional …

Explanations For Morphological Variability In Projectile Points: A Case Study From The Late Paleoindian Cody Complex, Cheryl K. Fogle-Hatch May 2015

Explanations For Morphological Variability In Projectile Points: A Case Study From The Late Paleoindian Cody Complex, Cheryl K. Fogle-Hatch

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines morphological variability (differences in qualitative attributes and metric dimensions) that is observed when comparing assemblages of projectile points. My archaeological case study is an evaluation of cultural historical types' of projectile points that have been assigned variously to the Alberta, Cody, or Firstview Complexes of the early Holocene from approximately 10,000 B.P. to 8,200 B.P. This analysis includes both quantitative and qualitative observations of 361 complete and fragmentary projectile points from 13 archaeological sites located in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. My analyses showed that qualitative attributes and metric dimensions of projectile points vary more through …

New Deal Navajo Linguistics And Language Documentation, Char Lane Peery May 2015

New Deal Navajo Linguistics And Language Documentation, Char Lane Peery

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation explores how with the New Deal, the US government committed itself to the construction of a Navajo ethnonation or a democratic polity that could interface with the US federal government. For my research methodology I used archival research and examined the papers of linguist Robert Young, a linguist and BIA employee who throughout his decades of work with the Navajo Tribe compiled some of the most extensive documentary material on the Navajo language, as well as his published works. I examined documents including correspondence between linguists Robert W Young and J.P. Harrington, dictionaries and other linguistic materials for …

Negative Effects Of Rapid Warming And Drought On Reproductive Dynamics And Population Size Of An Avian Predator In The Arid Southwest, Kirsten K. Cruz-Mcdonnell May 2015

Negative Effects Of Rapid Warming And Drought On Reproductive Dynamics And Population Size Of An Avian Predator In The Arid Southwest, Kirsten K. Cruz-Mcdonnell

Biology ETDs

Avian communities of arid ecosystems may be particularly vulnerable to global climate change due to the magnitude of model projected change for desert regions and the inherent challenges for species of resource limited ecosystems. How arid zone birds will be affected by rapid increases in air temperature and increased drought frequency and severity is poorly understood. To date, avian responses to climate change have primarily been studied in northern temperate regions in relatively mesic habitats. We studied the effects of increasing air temperature and aridity on a Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) population in the southwestern USA from 1998-2013. Over 16 …

Root Associated Microbes: The Mediators Between Plants And Soil, Sarah Livingston Dean May 2015

Root Associated Microbes: The Mediators Between Plants And Soil, Sarah Livingston Dean

Biology ETDs

Globally, increasing human populations have either caused or accelerated several types of environmental change. Symbiotic microbes have powerful effects on plant fitness, yet little study has been done on how microbial-plant relationships are affected by environmental changes. In two different ecosystems I explore how either nitrogen (N) pollution or drought can alter root associated microbe (RAM)-plant relationships using Next Generation Sequencing. In moist-meadow alpine tundra at Niwot Ridge, CO, I examine the relative contribution of host identity, N enrichment, and plant neighborhood on RAM diversity and community composition in two co-dominant plant species; Geum rossii and Deschampsia cespitosa. In New …

Multi-Scale Models Of Ovarian Cancer, Kimberly Rene Kanigel Winner May 2015

Multi-Scale Models Of Ovarian Cancer, Kimberly Rene Kanigel Winner

Biology ETDs

In ovarian cancer, disease and treatment can be examined across multiple spatial scales including molecules, cells, intra-tumor vasculature, and body-scale dynamics of circulating drugs. Survival of primary tumor cells and their development into disseminated tumors is related to adhesion between the cells, attachment, and invasion. Growth of new tumors depends on the delivery of nutrients, which depends on the tumor diameter and the tumors vasculature. Drug delivery also depends on tumor diameter and vasculature, and molecular- and gross-scale drug processes. A cellular Potts simulation integrated data at these multiple scales to model microscopic residual disease during relapse after a primary …

A Novel Family Of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Genes In Marsupials And Monotremes, Katina Krasnec May 2015

A Novel Family Of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Genes In Marsupials And Monotremes, Katina Krasnec

Biology ETDs

The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I family of genes encode for molecules that have well-conserved structures, but have evolved to perform a diverse functions. The availability of an opossum genome from the grey, short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica, has allowed for analysis of MHC class I genes in a marsupial. Traditional methods for gene discovery uncovered 13 MHC class I genes in the opossum. Utilization of a novel method to search for MHC domain structures discovered a family of 17 novel MHC class I genes. These genes, named ModoUT1-17, were located in a cluster on chromosome 1, unlinked to the …

Too Wet For Frogs, Too Dry For Lizards: Role Of Changing Precipitation On Tropical Frogs And Arid Lizards, Mason J. Ryan May 2015

Too Wet For Frogs, Too Dry For Lizards: Role Of Changing Precipitation On Tropical Frogs And Arid Lizards, Mason J. Ryan

Biology ETDs

During the course of the Anthropocene, humans have modified the landscape and atmosphere resulting in increased global temperatures and intensification of the hydrologic cycle over the last 100 years. Amphibians and reptiles are especially vulnerable to climate change because of their ectothermic physiology and sensitivity to changes in water availability. The role of moisture or precipitation in ectotherm responses to climate change has not been well studied, but moisture plays a vital role in all aspects of the lives of lizards and frogs. It is exceedingly difficult to study the ecological effects of changing precipitation patterns due the stochastic nature …

Mechanisms Of Enhanced Pulmonary Vasoconstriction And Calcium Sensitization Following Chronic Hypoxia, Charles Elbert Norton Iii May 2015

Mechanisms Of Enhanced Pulmonary Vasoconstriction And Calcium Sensitization Following Chronic Hypoxia, Charles Elbert Norton Iii

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

CH results in pressure dependent basal tone and enhanced depolarization- and endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced vasoconstriction in the pulmonary circulation through Rho kinase (ROK)-dependent Ca2+ sensitization, responses that may contribute to the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in this setting. The free radical superoxide (O2-) has been implicated in these responses. Because NADPH oxidases (NOX) play a role in the development of PH, we hypothesized that membrane depolarization, increases in intraluminal pressure, and ET-1 signaling lead to pulmonary vascular smooth muscle (VSM) myofilament Ca2+ sensitization and augmented vasoconstrictor reactivity following CH through NOX-derived O2- production. As epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and …

Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster May 2015

Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Caloric restriction (CR) increases lifespan and promotes both longevity and €˜healthy-aging. CR's benefits are dependent in part on NAD-dependent deacetylases known as sirtuins. NAD levels increase with CR promoting sirtuin-mediated deacetylation of lysine residues. Humans express seven sirtuin isoforms that localize to specific sub-cellular compartments. Sirtuins and acetylation affect numerous cellular processes including mitochondrial function. Sirt3 is the major mitochondrial deacetylase and regulates mitochondrial function namely ATP levels, oxidative stress and metabolism. Given the importance of mitochondrial acetylation and Sirt3, we hypothesized the existence of a mitochondrial-localized acetyltransferase that 1) localizes to the mitochondria; 2) has an acetyltransferase domain; and …

Connecting Stakeholders To Water Information : An Assessment Of New Mexico's Leading Water Resources Websites, Kathryn Cydne Schulte May 2015

Connecting Stakeholders To Water Information : An Assessment Of New Mexico's Leading Water Resources Websites, Kathryn Cydne Schulte

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The State of New Mexico is in the process of developing a 2015 Water Plan. Water resource planners, managers, and other stakeholders are looking to the internet for pertinent information to aid in the planning process. However, a multitude of stakeholders historically lack a voice to participate in the wide array of water-sharing agreements. Through internet communication, government agencies and non-governmental organizations can utilize their websites to communicate, negotiate, and collaborate with stakeholders. This study applies Senecah's Trinity of Voice Theory (2004) as the basis to evaluate access to information on websites through website performance usability and design to promote …

New Approaches For Data-Mining And Classification Of Mental Disorder In Brain Imaging Data, Mustafa Sinan Cetin May 2015

New Approaches For Data-Mining And Classification Of Mental Disorder In Brain Imaging Data, Mustafa Sinan Cetin

Computer Science ETDs

Brain imaging data are incredibly complex and new information is being learned as approaches to mine these data are developed. In addition to studying the healthy brain, new approaches for using this information to provide information about complex mental illness such as schizophrenia are needed. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are two well-known neuroimaging approaches that provide complementary information, both of which provide a huge amount of data that are not easily modelled. Currently, diagnosis of mental disorders is based on a patients self-reported experiences and observed behavior over the longitudinal course of the illness. There is …

The Role Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Vascular Function And Hypertension, Natalie Catherine Fredette May 2015

The Role Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Vascular Function And Hypertension, Natalie Catherine Fredette

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Regulation of arterial tone relies heavily on molecular crosstalk between endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Although it has been demonstrated that estrogen (E2) exerts protective effects against cardiovascular disease (CVD), the exact mechanisms and balance of E2 signaling in endothelial and smooth muscle cells remain unresolved. Here we characterize the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) in the vasculature by elucidating its pathway in endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production and vascular smooth muscle maintenance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by NADPH oxidases (NOX). NO is thought of as a vasoprotective entity, while the overproduction of ROS by NOX can lead to …

In Vivo Characterization Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Mammary Tumorigenesis, Nicole Andrea Marjon May 2015

In Vivo Characterization Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Mammary Tumorigenesis, Nicole Andrea Marjon

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The steroid hormone, estrogen (17β-estradiol or E2), is involved in numerous and varied physiological processes. Until recently, all E2-dependent effects were thought to be propagated exclusively through the classical estrogen receptors (ERs), ERα and ERβ. However, in double ERα/β knockout mice, select E2-dependent effects remain, suggesting the existence of additional E2 receptors, such as the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) 1. E2 plays a central role in the progression of breast cancer, and inhibiting E2 signaling in women with breast cancer increases long-term survival. The role of GPER in breast cancer is largely unknown. E2 stimulation of GPER activates the …

The Role Of Ofd1 In The Pathogenesis Of Polycystic Kidney Disease, Stephanie Justine Jerman May 2015

The Role Of Ofd1 In The Pathogenesis Of Polycystic Kidney Disease, Stephanie Justine Jerman

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type1 (OFD1) is an inherited disorder caused by expression of mutant OFD1 protein and results in abnormalities in facial and limb development and polycystic kidney disease that resembles Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). The similarities in renal disease pathogenesis in patients with OFD1 and ADPKD suggest that the proteins implicated in these diseases, OFD1 and the polycystins, respectively, function on a common pathway in the affected cell types. This calls for an investigation to uncover the mechanism by which OFD1 contributes to polycystic kidney disease pathogenesis, which remains unknown. This thesis details for the first time the …

Tumor Promoting Properties Of Field Cancerized Fibroblasts In Cell Culture, Randi L. Smith May 2015

Tumor Promoting Properties Of Field Cancerized Fibroblasts In Cell Culture, Randi L. Smith

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Our recent studies have shown that Tumor Adjacent Histologically Normal (TAHN) breast tissue demonstrates many of the characteristics of breast tumors. For example, through immunohistochemical staining with markers such as alpha smooth muscle actin and TGF-β, we have shown the accumulation of myofibroblasts in TAHN tissues 1 cm from the tumor margin (TAHN-1). Additionally, TAHN-1 epithelia stain positive for epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) associated proteins, such as transforming growth factor beta and alpha smooth muscle actin. The purpose of this study was to determine if TAHN-1 fibroblasts retained myofibroblast characteristics and if they could induce EMT in primary culture. …

Yeast V-Atpase Regulation By Phosphofructokinase-1, Chun-Yuan Chan May 2015

Yeast V-Atpase Regulation By Phosphofructokinase-1, Chun-Yuan Chan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

V-ATPase is a vacuolar (lysosome-like) ATPase-dependent proton pump necessary for maintaining pH homeostasis in the organelles of the endomembrane system. It also contributes to regulation of the cytosol pH and the extracellular pH. In specialized cells (renal intercalated cells, epididymis clear cells, and osteoclasts), V-ATPase proton transport supports urinary acidification, sperm maturation, and bone resorption. Genetic mutations of V-ATPase expressed in those tissue-specific cells cause distal renal tubular acidosis, infertility, and osteopetrosis. V-ATPases are composed of a peripheral domain (V1), which hydrolyzes ATP, and a membrane-bound domain (Vo), which transports proton. V-ATPase activity is tightly regulated in vivo by numbers …

The Relationship Between Parks, Health, Income, And Education In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jessica Sebring Small May 2015

The Relationship Between Parks, Health, Income, And Education In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jessica Sebring Small

Architecture and Planning ETDs

As resources are becoming scarcer, Southwestern cities are looking for ways to expend less water and money, leading to removal of green spaces. This is happening alongside the current health crisis occurring throughout the United States, which is unfortunate since urban green spaces have been found to improve human health. The purpose of this study, focusing on Albuquerque, New Mexico, is to determine: (1) if those benefits appear to exist in a desert city, and (2) how additional variables, such as income and education, compare with parks regarding impact on community health. A GIS analysis was conducted using park, health, …

New Optimization Technique For Radiation Therapy Planning, Daniel Riofrio May 2015

New Optimization Technique For Radiation Therapy Planning, Daniel Riofrio

Computer Science ETDs

The main goal of radiation therapy is to deliver a lethal dose of radiation to the targeted tumor while minimizing the radiation dose to the surrounding normal tissues and critical organs. Modern cancer therapy has benefited enormously from computer controlled treatment devices with increased precision and capability. However, this increased sophistication also creates new challenges for treatment planning. As the number of parameters in a treatment plan increases, the traditional computational approaches are no longer adequate to fully exploit the potential of the latest treatment devices. This is because at the heart of treatment planning is often a set of …

The Ant And The Trap: Evolution Of Ant-Inspired Obstacle Avoidance In A Multi-Agent Robotic System, Karl Stolleis May 2015

The Ant And The Trap: Evolution Of Ant-Inspired Obstacle Avoidance In A Multi-Agent Robotic System, Karl Stolleis

Computer Science ETDs

Interest in swarm robotics, particularly those modeled on biological systems, has been increasing with each passing year. We created the iAnt robot as a platform to test how well an ant-inspired robotic swarm could collect resources in an unmapped environment. Although swarm robotics is still a loosely defined field, one of the included hallmarks is multiple robots cooperating to complete a given task. The use of multiple robots means increased cost for research, scaling often linearly with the number of robots. We set out to create a system with the previously described capabilities while lowering the entry cost by building …

The Political Geography Of Plea Bargaining In Federal Death Penalty Cases, Greg Goelzhauser Apr 2015

The Political Geography Of Plea Bargaining In Federal Death Penalty Cases, Greg Goelzhauser

New Mexico Law Review

This Article employs the Breaking Bad counterfactual to motivate a preliminary empirical analysis of plea bargaining outcomes in federal capital cases. Given the Justice Department’s express commitment to applying the federal death penalty uniformly across states, New Mexico’s lack of a death penalty should be immaterial in determining whether Walt and other characters would have faced the federal death penalty. Nonetheless, scholars have demonstrated that there is considerable geographic variation in the federal death penalty’s administration. Moreover, scholars have devoted considerable attention to illuminating the “[s]ignificant federalism and state sovereignty issues lurk[ing] beneath the surface of a nationally uniform federal …
