Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin Jun 2015

Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin

Psychology ETDs

Prenatal alcohol exposure results in cognitive and physical impairments in children, which are collectively defined as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The disorders account for the largest proportion of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals with FASD, animal models consistently report deleterious effects of early alcohol exposure on GABA-ergic inhibitory pathways. The post-motor beta rebound (PMBR), a transient increase of 15-30 Hz beta power in the motor cortex that follows the termination of movement, has been implicated as a neural signature of …

Characterization Of Urban Storm Runoff By Monitoring Sediments And Riparian Vegetation, Adrienne Martinez Jun 2015

Characterization Of Urban Storm Runoff By Monitoring Sediments And Riparian Vegetation, Adrienne Martinez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Difficulties associated with monitoring urban stormwater quality present considerable challenges to stormwater managers in the arid southwest. Complexities arise from the infrequent occurrence of storm events, their highly localized extent, and the short duration of storm hydrographs. The presence of sediment in high amount can make both sample collection challenging and the interpretation of the resulting data difficult. This study explored an alternative strategy in which sediments and plant matter from within the channels in an urban watershed in the Northeast Heights of Albuquerque, New Mexico, were collected for analysis of metals from possible sources within the watershed. The upper …

Low Temperature Growth And Characterization Of Zno Nanostructures, Matthew Erdman Jun 2015

Low Temperature Growth And Characterization Of Zno Nanostructures, Matthew Erdman

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A large factor in the decision of using solar systems over readily available fossil fuels and other energy production methods is the upfront cost of solar systems. Therefore a potentially low cost energy harvesting device has been proposed in the form of a hybrid organic-inorganic thermoelectric solar cell. The proposed device uses two different inorganic materials as the top and bottom contacts, and an organic material between the two contacts as a light absorber. The two contacts proposed are Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanowires and Bismuth Telluride (BiTe) nanowires, and the organic light absorber is a semiconductor porphyrin. To further develop …

Third-Harmonic Generation For Efficient Frequency Conversion And Microscopic Imaging, Cristina Rodriguez Jun 2015

Third-Harmonic Generation For Efficient Frequency Conversion And Microscopic Imaging, Cristina Rodriguez

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Third-harmonic (TH) generation microscopy is a highly versatile technique with a broad range of applications that derives its contrast from inhomogeneities in the linear and nonlinear optical properties of materials. The work presented in this thesis centers on the use of TH generation for microscopic imaging of dielectric thin film coatings and air plasmas, and analyzes stacks of thin films for efficient TH generation. We analyzed theoretically and experimentally the influence of spherical aberration in TH generation and determined the conditions under which this effect can be neglected. These results are relevant for applications involving material characterization, such as the …

Muscle Fatigue At The End Of A Maximal Oxygen Consumption Test, Gustavo Sierra

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Fatigue is a task dependent multifactorial phenomenon, and the most common tool to analyze it is the VO2max test. The purpose of this study was to investigate if muscle is exhaustively taxed at the end of a VO2max test. This was based on data from sEMG, heart rate, and force applied to the pedals during and immediately after a VO2max test compared to an intense anaerobic test. Methods. 12 male participants (mean ± SD age = 28.09 ± 6.55 years, height = 176.7 ± 2.97 cm, weight = 73.31 ± 8.44 kg, and VO2max = 60.93 ± 9.75 mL/kg/min) were …

The Electronic Structure Of The Pyranopterin Dithiolene Cofactor And Radical Reporters Of Excited State Interactions, Benjamin William Stein Jun 2015

The Electronic Structure Of The Pyranopterin Dithiolene Cofactor And Radical Reporters Of Excited State Interactions, Benjamin William Stein

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Crystal structures of multiple molybdenum enzymes clearly demonstrate interesting structural distortions involving the pyranopterin dithiolene. These distortions can be correlated with pyranopterin oxidation state through the use of DFT geometry optimized structures of the possible oxidation states, and these are correlated with enzyme family. The potential role of the pyranopterin dithiolene in electron transfer in the varied enzyme familes has been explored through the use of non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) electron transport calculations. These calculations demonstrate clear differences in electron transport behavior as a function of pyranopterin oxidation state. The Jahn-Teller effect can strongly impact the geometric and electronic structures …

Risk-Based Decision Making Model For The Selection Of Flood Mitigation Alternatives, Natalia M. Sanabria Andino Jun 2015

Risk-Based Decision Making Model For The Selection Of Flood Mitigation Alternatives, Natalia M. Sanabria Andino

Civil Engineering ETDs

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the frequency of natural disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes and flooding, resulting in big economic, environmental, and social impacts. In the case of flood events, impacts such as community anxiety, loss of life, water pollution, and contamination of agricultural land have been found to be equally, if not more important, than the economic impacts of such events. Nevertheless, the literature shows that flood risk assessment studies incorporating economic, environmental, and societal impacts are limited. In addition, flood mitigation measures are typically compared focusing on economic criteria and not considering stakeholders …

Calcium Signaling Dynamics In Rbl Cells Under Pulsed Ligand Exposure, Mario Paz Jun 2015

Calcium Signaling Dynamics In Rbl Cells Under Pulsed Ligand Exposure, Mario Paz

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Understanding cellular signaling is important to learning about life at a fundamental level. As an extension of this, understanding the dysregulation of cell signaling is the key to identifying and treating disease. At present, there are multitudes of ways to investigate the cell signaling process, from immunofluorescence to single particle tracking. These techniques are advantageous in their own right, but having the ability to interrogate suspension and adherent cells with reagents at high temporal resolution and image them simultaneously is a process that could uncover many unseen signaling events. In Aim 1, we describe a microfluidic device for live cell …

Pulsed Laser Induced Breakdown In Solid State Materials And Air, Zhanliang Sun Jun 2015

Pulsed Laser Induced Breakdown In Solid State Materials And Air, Zhanliang Sun

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Laser induced breakdown is important in applications ranging from laser machining to laser induced breakdown spectroscopy to laser induced damage. Laser induced breakdown in dielectric materials results from a combination of multiphoton absorption (MPA), tunneling and avalanche ionization. Aspects of these processes have been studied through measurements of the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) and its dependence on pulse duration, polarization and wavelength. At long pulse durations (> 1ns), relaxation of conduction band electrons during the pulse is responsible for the increased LIDT compared to scaling derived from sub-picosecond pulses. Linear polarization produces lower LIDT than circular polarization for MPA …

The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott Jun 2015

The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott

Special Education ETDs

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the world, with the latest estimates showing that 1 in 68 children will be diagnosed with the condition. One of the core deficits associated with autism is social communication. Theory of mind (Baron-Cohen, 1985) posits that children with autism do not have the ability to understand that others have thoughts different from their own. This has been suggested as one of the main reasons that social communication deficits exist in children with autism. Motivation is likely the main component in effectively teaching many children with autism. Interventions that incorporate movies would seem …

Modeling And Optimizing Ipmc Microgrippers, Justin Simpson Jun 2015

Modeling And Optimizing Ipmc Microgrippers, Justin Simpson

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A FEA (Finite Element Analysis) model was used to determine the change in performance that results from varying the size and shape of IPMC (Ionic Polymer Metal Composite) fingers. Using Comsol Multiphysics and modeFRONTIER, these fingers were modeled and optimized for both force exerted and deflection. Using the Comsol model, we were able to determine the tip deflection and force output of many different IPMC fingers which were verified experimentally. Then, using modeFRONTIER we were able to optimize the fingers to determine the best shape and area depending on whether a high force or deflection was desired.

Listen, Then Speak: Foregrounding Womens Spaces, Stories, And Relationships In Dramatic Writing, Irene Loy

Theatre & Dance ETDs

In this essay, I provide documentation for my theory and practice during this MFA degree. I begin with a short personal essay on my auto-biography leading up to and including this program. Then I follow with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings to my writing practice. Of particular importance here is the framing of listening and spaciousness as feminine and of speaking and activity as masculine, as a means of underscoring the inherent value of that which has traditionally been undervalued in the history of dramatic literature. This characterizes a move toward women's bodies, rather than away from them, including …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of A Suspended Particle In A Fluid Near A Wall, Jianwei Ju Jun 2015

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of A Suspended Particle In A Fluid Near A Wall, Jianwei Ju

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The behavior of the suspended particles in a fluid is an important subject in fluid flow studies. Earlier research works mostly were performed using a continuum treatment on a macro scale level. Recent developments in the field of micro- and nanofluids have led to a renewed interest in molecular hydrodynamics phenomena. The micro hydrodynamic interactions between particles and solid surfaces have been shown to play important roles in the ordering of particles in vibrated fluids, self-organization of biological cells, and collective dynamics of swimming particles[Voth2002, Riedel2005, Hernandez2005], micro-electronic fluid behaviors and also have great prospects in industry applications. Though a …

Indentation Behavior Of Multilayer Al/Sic Thin Films, Ryan Jamison Jun 2015

Indentation Behavior Of Multilayer Al/Sic Thin Films, Ryan Jamison

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Nanoindentation is useful for evaluating the mechanical properties, such as hardness and Youngs modulus, of bulk and thin film materials. Multilayer thin films are an important subset of materials in which alternating layers of two or more materials are deposited on a substrate. Fabrication of multilayer films can result in imperfect layer geometry, particularly the flatness and thickness of each layer. Traditional nanoindentation techniques alone cannot provide insight into the microstructure of each layer. The finite element method is used to investigate the behavior of multilayer aluminum/silicon carbide thin film composites with imperfect internal geometry when subjected to various loadings. …

This dissertation leverages archival theory, public memory theory, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory to argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reinterpreted the Mormon past to engender identification and foster political action during the Equal Rights Amendment ratification period (1976-1981). Chapter One provides readers with an orientation to the Sandra Allen Collection of Papers on Mormonism and argues that its creator, Sandra Allen, marshaled her understanding of archiving, history writing, and institutional archives to make her history public. Chapter Two: On Memory uses theories of public memory to explain why the Mormon Church built the Nauvoo Monument …

Electrochemical Investigation Of Homogenous Species At An Electrode Interface, Christopher Alan Larsen Iii Jun 2015

Electrochemical Investigation Of Homogenous Species At An Electrode Interface, Christopher Alan Larsen Iii

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

CO2 reduction is a pressing problem worldwide, and one obstacle in the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to more useful C1 products such as methanol and formic acid is the kinetic barrier known as overpotential. The overpotential of rearranging the nuclei in CO2 to accommodate electron transfer can be lowered by pre-bending the CO2 molecule in an adduct-mediated complex. The work presented in Part I utilizes a combination of hard and soft donors on pincer-like ligands to effect the bending of CO2 prior to electrochemical reduction. A large majority of the work consists of using …

Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar Jun 2015

Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

The capability to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging in a single snapshot is a highly coveted goal for the imaging community. To be able to extend the depth-of-field while simultaneously encoding depth in the point spread function (PSF) itself allows an imaging solution which is less time consuming and less data intensive than the inefficient multiscan based conventional 3D imaging. Light-field cameras also achieve 3D imaging in a snapshot, but at the cost of greatly reduced resolution. Phase mask based depth encoding solutions have been proposed by other groups, but they all suffer from a relatively smaller depth-of-field. Recently there has …

The Family Caregiver's Experience: Examining The Positive And Negative Aspects Of Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Using A Stress Process Model, Susan Lynch

Nursing ETDs

Family caregivers significantly contribute to the provision of health care for their family members. This complex care can result in stress that may lead to both positive and negative consequences for the caregiver. Current literature tends to focus on negative consequences such as caregiver burden. Therefore, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are proposed as concepts that may better reflect the family caregiving experience. Compassion fatigue is comprised of two components; burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among family caregivers and to explore the relationship between …

Theory, Multiscale Simulations, And Experiments On Mesoscale Multifunctional Systems, Lance Edward Edens

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Computational simulations use theoretical models to reproduce, as accurately as possible, the observed real-world behavior of complex structures. Guided by experimental observations, many multiscale/coarse-grained simulations seek to explore increasingly complicated systems. Here, a multiscale/coarse-grained simulation program (called TM2) is developed with applications to 1) properties and mechanisms of DNA and DNA polymerases, and 2) adhesion between whole bacterial cells and patterned surfaces. Results from the bacterial adhesion application form a part of a larger collaborative effort aimed at creating multifunctional, controllable surfaces to capture and kill pathogenic bacteria. The application of TM2 is first demonstrated by a coarse-grained model for …

Nonparametric Bayes Approach For A Semi-Mechanistic Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Model, Yan Dong

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Both frequentist and Bayesian approaches have been used to characterize population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics(PK/PD) models. These methods focus on estimating the population parameters and assessing the association between the characteristics of PK/PD and the subject covariates. In this work, we propose a Dirichlet process mixture model to classify the patients based on their individualized pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles. Then we can predict the new patients dose-response curves given their concentration-time profiles. Additionally, we implement a modern Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm for sampling inference of parameters. The detailed sampling procedures as well as the results are discussed in a simulation …

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of Molybdenum Enzymes And Models, Chao Dong Jun 2015

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of Molybdenum Enzymes And Models, Chao Dong

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In this dissertation spectroscopic methods such as electronic absorption (EAS), resonance Raman (rRaman), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and MCD spectroscopies have been used in combination with DFT calculations for the interpretation of experimental results. These methods have been used to investigate the molybdenum coordination environment in enzymes and model complexes. Xanthine oxidase (XO), one of the canonical molybdenum enzyme families, hydroxylizes heterocyclic substrates by inserting an oxygen atom from molybdenum-activated water into a substrate C-H bond. This generates reducing equivalents that pass through two iron sulfur clusters and then to FAD, where oxidation of the FAD takes place. In this …
