Social Network Influences And College Student Drinking, Adrienne Borders
Social Network Influences And College Student Drinking, Adrienne Borders
Psychology ETDs
Heavy drinking among college students inhibits academic success and poses serious risks to others in the form of alcohol-related violence, sexual assaults, and automobile accidents (Hingson, 2010). Furthermore, data have indicated an increasing rate of heavy drinking among college students (Hingson, 2010; NIAAA, 2002; NIAAA, 2007). Research suggests that parents maintain ongoing influence on young adult alcohol use during the transition to college, even in the face of potentially negative influence from peers and perceived drinking norms. However, the variables used to demonstrate this have varied widely. This study aimed to develop a cohesive model of parent and peer influences …
Oxytocin And Romantic Relationships: A Functional Perspective, Nicholas Grebe
Oxytocin And Romantic Relationships: A Functional Perspective, Nicholas Grebe
Psychology ETDs
Despite a large body of evidence implicating oxytocin (OT) in various classes of social relationships, researchers have only recently investigated how OT might function within human romantic relationships. I contribute to the growing literature on OT and romantic relationships with the current study, which investigated relationship features that promote OT secretion in a sample of 75 romantic couples. Partners in separate rooms were asked to write (for 10 minutes) about ways their partner did or did not support them. OT was assayed before and after this writing task, and also at a follow-up session one week later. Mixed model analyses …
The Functional Impact Of Neurocognitive Deficits In Pediatric Cancer Survivors And Associated Risk Factors, Sarah Hile
The Functional Impact Of Neurocognitive Deficits In Pediatric Cancer Survivors And Associated Risk Factors, Sarah Hile
Psychology ETDs
Childhood cancer survivors are at risk for long-term neurocognitive morbidities. Current research has only recently begun to examine how these neurocognitive late effects translate into impairments across important aspects of daily living. Additionally, research remains in its early stages of identifying risk factors associated with neurocognitive and broad functional impairments. The current study explores a proposed model of neurocognitive late effects by examining the relationship between neurocognitive deficits and broad functional impairment in cancer survivors relative to healthy controls. The current study also explores the contribution of associated risk factors including treatment severity and time since treatment among cancer survivors …
Investigation Of Membrane Fouling And Cleaning In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Of Municipal Wastewater, Michelle Miller
Investigation Of Membrane Fouling And Cleaning In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Of Municipal Wastewater, Michelle Miller
Civil Engineering ETDs
Municipal wastewater discharge to the environment is generally subject to regulations established under the Clean Water Act. Though the water is highly treated it is not suitable for human consumption. Increased interest in water reuse for potable supply introduces concern about trace constituents present in their water, such as pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors. Current treatment processes, such as reverse osmosis, are used to remove many of these compounds, but is expensive and energy intensive. The rise of interest in potable water reuse may cause consumers to be concerned about trace constituents present in their water and would require additional treatment. …
Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bivalent Inhibitors Of Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase, Chunliang Liu
Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bivalent Inhibitors Of Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase, Chunliang Liu
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The D-glucose disaccharide α, α-D-trehalose is synthesized by a variety of bacteria, fungi, plants and invertebrates to support cell survival by functioning as a fuel, a metabolic regulator or a protectant against environmental stress. Five different trehalose biosynthetic pathways are known to exist, one of which, the OtsA/OtsB pathway is common among pathogenic bacteria and fungi and is also found in parasitic nematodes. Previously reported otsA and otsB gene knockout (or knockdown) experiments have shown that both pathway enzymes are essential for M. tuberculosis cell growth and host colonization. RNAi gene silencing carried out in the nematode model system Caenohabditis …
Mining Public Databases For Discovery Of Structure And Function Within The Hotdog-Fold Thioesterase And Had Phosphatase Enzyme Families, Sarah Toews Keating
Mining Public Databases For Discovery Of Structure And Function Within The Hotdog-Fold Thioesterase And Had Phosphatase Enzyme Families, Sarah Toews Keating
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
For my doctoral work, I have developed strategies to mine public databases for data that can be used to infer structural and functional information for the hotdog-fold and HADSF superfamilies. For the hotdog-fold superfamily, I used curated and automatically applied annotations of structure, taxonomic lineage, function, and subfamily membership from the UniProtKB, gene context and taxonomic information from the NCBI, and the results of several in-depth explorations of subfamily/function and structural class membership. Based on the distribution of the aforementioned annotations mapped onto a sequence similarity network (SSN), I applied structural assignments to sequences and/or specific function/subfamily assignments to ~143,000 …
Case Studies Of The Hot Dog-Fold And Acyl-Adenylate-Forming Superfamilies: Characterizing The Importance Of Functional Divergence In Cellular Metabolism, Lucas R. Zimney
Case Studies Of The Hot Dog-Fold And Acyl-Adenylate-Forming Superfamilies: Characterizing The Importance Of Functional Divergence In Cellular Metabolism, Lucas R. Zimney
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Some of the biggest contributors to cellular respiration (and cellular metabolism in general) are acyl-CoA derivatives, a subclass of biological thioesters. Known to function in a variety of pathways, the regulation of their formation and breakdown are critical, carried about by acyl-CoA synthetases and thioesterases, respectively. The work reported within this dissertation will focus on functional divergence within two enzyme superfamilies -- the hot dog-fold and acyl-adenylate-forming superfamilies — and can be broken down into two main parts. Part one will look at tracking the functional divergence within the hot dog-fold superfamily thioesterases. A highly evolved thioesterase, flK, has been …
Spatial Decay Of Rotating Waves And Restrictions On Finite Disks., Sahitya Konda
Spatial Decay Of Rotating Waves And Restrictions On Finite Disks., Sahitya Konda
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this thesis, we consider the system of reaction-diffusion equations and the behavior of the solution of such a system. The focus is to concentrate on solutions which decay at infinity. Under suitable assumptions, we prove the solution and its derivatives decay exponentially in all space. We also attempt to show that the solution decays exponentially for the system of equations when posed on a finite disk. This result has been confirmed via numerical methods before, but has never been attempted through an analytic approach, like in this paper. We prove the exponential decay of the solution in a one …
Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield
Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield
Psychology ETDs
The negative effects of racial discrimination and microaggressions on health have been consistently documented, but only a handful of studies have examined this topic among Native Americans. The goal of this study was to test the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model (Walters, Simoni, & Evans-Campbell, 2002) among Native American college students attending two post-secondary institutions in the Southwestern United States. It was hypothesized that microaggressions would be positively related to substance use, and that cultural factors would attenuate the strength of this relationship. A total of 347 participants (65% female) completed a one-time online survey that included the Microaggressions Scale, the Actualization …
Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole
Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Proteins play a critical role in nearly every biological activity. In consequence, organismal health and homeostasis often hinges on the ability of intracellular regulatory systems to sustain the quality and function of these diverse, structurally complex macromolecules. Correct protein function depends on correct form, and during periods of destabilizing cellular stress, protein quality is managed in part by the heat shock response, which acts to support, isolate, and reform new or damaged proteins, and in part by the autophagic recycling of abnormal proteins, cytotoxic protein aggregates, and terminally damaged organelles. We conducted a pooled analysis of available research in humans …
A Multiple Case Examination Of Sexuality In Counselor Education: Pedagogy, Ideology, And Discourse, Megan Speciale
A Multiple Case Examination Of Sexuality In Counselor Education: Pedagogy, Ideology, And Discourse, Megan Speciale
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
In this study, I explored the role and function of counselor educators' ideology in their sexuality counseling pedagogy, as demonstrated by teaching philosophy, curriculum, and teaching strategies. In line with my theoretical framework, queer feminist pedagogy, I employed qualitative multicase methodology with six counselor educators, bounded by the shared phenomena of teaching sexuality-focused counseling curricula. I performed critical discourse analysis on the dialogic and textual discourse generated from interviews and curricular document mining to identify ideologies embedded in educators' discourse. The analysis revealed the considerable influence of personal ideology on educators' sexuality counseling pedagogy, which constituted the following themes: (a) …
Development Of Soft-Matter Delivery Systems: Coupling Ph Responsive Polymers To Porous Silica Particles, Andrew Gomez
Development Of Soft-Matter Delivery Systems: Coupling Ph Responsive Polymers To Porous Silica Particles, Andrew Gomez
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
This work investigates polymeric coating of evaporated induced self-assembly (EISA) mesoprous silica nanoparticles for potential use in controlled drug release and therapeutics. As demonstrated here, lipid bilayer coatings can be easily replaced with different polymer analogs allowing for dynamic response to environmental stimuli. In addition to coupling commercially available diblock polymers we synthesized and characterized a unique dual hydrophilic pH responsive diblock copolymer, PEO-PAA. This hybrid polymeric-nanoparticle system drastically improves targeting and release capabilities through the modular ability to couple multiple different polymers. Furthermore, this work is supported by an improved method to form and study giant polymer vesicles (pGVs)
Neighborhood Experiences And The Co-Construction Of Neighborhood, Race, And Gender: A Qualitative Study Of A Middle-Class, Latino-White Neighborhood, Elena Windsong
Sociology ETDs
This dissertation incorporates three distinct bodies of scholarship to bridge theories on: 1) the social construction of community and neighborhood, 2) the social construction of race, and 3) the social construction of gender. In doing so, I identify similarities in these theories by focusing on the symbolic and interactional dimensions. I draw from this theoretical framework to address the research question: for a middle-class neighborhood with a relatively even mix of both whites and Latinos, what are the patterns of neighborhood experiences in terms of race and gender? I develop the multidimensional analytic concept of neighborhood experiences to include neighboring, …
Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski
Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski
History ETDs
The discovery of gold in California inspired a rush of amateur miners to the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1849. Meanwhile, Europeans hurried to their Alps to climb during the Golden Age of Mountaineering. These events, seemingly separate, came from the same basic impetus. The Scientific Revolution eased the old fear of mountains from the religious tradition and gave humans the license and curiosity to explore. Mountains also offered capital incentive to adventurers in the form of mineral deposits, tourism and the glory that comes with athletic accomplishment. Between 1849 and 1936, "mountaineers" transformed the nearly inaccessible high places of the …
"The Fact Of God": Form And Belief In British Modernist Poetry, Annarose Fitzgerald
"The Fact Of God": Form And Belief In British Modernist Poetry, Annarose Fitzgerald
English Language and Literature ETDs
My dissertation analyzes the relationship between the concept of metaphysical belief and the poetic innovations enlisted to articulate this belief in the works of British modernist poets W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, Mina Loy, T.S. Eliot, Basil Bunting, Philip Larkin, and Thom Gunn. Moving from Celtic mythos to Buddhist philosophy, Anglo-Catholic prayer to ancient Greek burial rites, I argue that spirituality and poetic experimentation were reciprocal influences: modernist experimentations in poetic form had a direct impact on how poets represented and articulated metaphysical beliefs and practices, and these metaphysical concepts themselves significantly affected these poets development of their craft, prompting …

Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Poisoning by Botulinum Neurotoxins (BoNTs) leads to the severe neuroparalytic illness known as botulism, which is characterized by flaccid paralysis, respiratory failure, and death. BoNTs are the most acutely toxic substances on the planet, so detection at physiologically relevant concentrations is difficult. Because current treatments for botulism cannot reverse existing paralysis, rapid detection is key, and current diagnostic techniques are not meeting this need. We have developed a flow-based assay platform that allows for detection of the Light Chain of BoNT/A as well as a means to study the action of the toxin on its protein substrate in a system …

"The Four Horseman Of The Late Capitalist Apocalypse": U.S. Comic Books, Ideology, And Trauma In Post-9/11 Society, Kathryn Manis
Art & Art History ETDs
In the contemporary United States apocalypse, dystopia, and catastrophe are commonplace. Indeed, both the increasing presence of fictional apocalypse in art and popular culture and the tone of apocalypticism in U.S. political, environmental, and social rhetorics, have been noted by writers and thinkers from a wide range of fields. Scholars of neoliberalism in particular have traced this popularity to the economic and political realities of late-capitalism and the ideological contradictions embedded in the evolution of capitalism to its current, immersive iteration. What has gone undiscussed, however, is the relationship of this anxious preoccupation to a prevailing, national condition; a condition …

The Ideal Citoyenne: Women, Class, & The French Revolution In Philibert Louis Debucourt's Fine-Art Prints, Kelsey Martin
Art & Art History ETDs
Philibert Louis Debucourt's (1755 - 1832) fête galante and domestic genre prints treated women, their social positions, and their experiences of love and relationships as a primary subject, and participated in the rapidly shifting political, economical, and social structure of the years surrounding the 1789 Revolution. These prints aided in the construction of appropriate and inappropriate female behavior of the ideal citoyenne through the representation of eighteenth-century beliefs regarding female sexuality and its class associations. It is in Debucourt's domestic genre scenes that the virtue and serenity of women are clear, validating women's prominence as wives and mothers within the …
"We Know Where We Stand": Contesting And Constructing Knowledge In Nicaragua's Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic, Sarah Leister
"We Know Where We Stand": Contesting And Constructing Knowledge In Nicaragua's Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic, Sarah Leister
Latin American Studies ETDs
Sugarcane workers in northwestern Nicaragua are suffering from chronic kidney disease of non-traditional causes (CKDnt) at extremely high rates. In the small town of Chichigalpa alone, CKDnt causes 46% of male deaths (Kurzrok et al. 2013). This paper examines the CKD epidemic as a fundamentally structural problem, not merely a biological abnormality, because it is closely linked to labor exploitation, poverty, human rights violations, and historical context. Grounded in literature from medical anthropology and medical sociology and based on two months of ethnographic field research in northwestern Nicaragua, it analyzes how knowledge production interacts with scientific uncertainty about CKDs specific …
